The Mafia's Doll
Prologue
"You know I don't hand over the valuables without due payment."
Lissette's eyelids dropped to the henchman's greedy fingers with a practiced look of annoyance. His fingers rolled back into his palm as he dropped his hand awkwardly.
He grunted and reluctantly reached back and signed for his cohort to bring out the metallic briefcase. He gently laid it on the wooden table and clicked it open, showing it the same amount of care a mother would a newborn child.
He stepped aside and allowed Lissette to lean over and count the money.
"You must be new," she said abrasively before snapping the briefcase shut. She moved her hand to her shoulder, uncapped the poster tube, and withdrew the furled up painting from within. He snatched it up quickly and unfolded it, taking in every detail to ensure its authenticity. By the time he looked up, Lissette was already walking away with her back turned to him.
"Take care of that one. It's a Monet painting, and it wasn't easy to get my hands on," she said, and just as the words left her lips, she disappeared into the starless dawn.
Lissette looked over her shoulder to make sure that she was no longer being followed by the man from earlier, the man with the silver watch that gleamed in the streetlight like a crescent moon in the black night.
