She looked out her window at the oddly cold night. It was the middle of June in Montana and freezing cold outside. She looked up at the angry clouds covering the stars like the thick cotton blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She looked out at the trees as they swayed in the breeze. There was no moon. There were no stars. There was nothing but the wind and the trees. She watched the livid clouds light up and scream. A deluge of tears fell from the heavens. She sat her hand on the window and watched the rain rush down the glass. Another strike of lightning lit up the sky as the thunder shook the house. Her little sister peeked her head through the door.
"Come here Dahnya." She said as she opened her arms to the little 6 year old. She had to smile as the little girl walked into the room with her curly honey curls sticking out everywhere on her head. She had her Dora the Explorer pajamas on and her Elmo slippers. Dahnya sat on her lap in the window seat and looked at the commotion outside the window.
"Briella, what do you think made the sky so angry?" Dahnya said as she followed the water down the window with her little fingers.
"I don't know Danny. But it looks scary out there. I wouldn't want to be stuck in that storm."
"Why don't you fix it Brie? I know you can. Aunty Oriana was talking about it earlier. She said you are so strong but you don't like to use your magic. Aunty said you think things over to much. And Liam said it's just because you are a scaredie cat. I told him that wasn't true though. I said that you are the most un-scared person in the world and that you can do anything. Then I kicked him. Aunty Ana put me in time out because I gave him a bruise though. But, I would do it again." Dahnya said in one breath. Briella looked down at her with a smile on her face. That little girl could talk, and talk, and talk.
"I can't use my magic to stop the storm, Dahnya." Briella said as she tried to smooth down the child's crazy hair.
"But you can! And then everyone will be able to sleep and the world won't look so sad and angry."
"Sometimes it's ok to be sad and angry. Sometimes you have to let it all out Danny. This is the world's way of letting it out. And maybe the rain is helping someone. Maybe there was a deer out there that was dying of thirst and this rain is helping it stay alive. It's not my place to mess with nature."
"But you could. I know it, I just do. You have so much magic. Just like mommy, she did too." Dahnya said as she leaned back against Briella's chest and closed her eyes.
"I'll never be as strong as mommy was, Danny." Brielle whispered as she turned to her bed with the child in her arms. She laid down on the bed and put them both under the covers as she looked outside once more. She wished she could cry. She wished she could punch something and scream as loud as the cracking thunder. But she knew she couldn't. She had to stay strong for her little sister and little brother. She had to stay strong for her aunt. They all counted on her and she couldn't let them down. She would never let this family fall apart.
