Two o'clock in the morning was typically a quiet time in small towns like this one, but this day was different. It was Thanksgiving weekend and all the college students were home. Used to the college lifestyle and not having seen each other in a while, Dan and Jared were in the car, on their way home from a local bar. Dan had announced earlier that day that he was going to propose to his girlfriend of 4 years and the two had gone out to celebrate.

Dan shouldn't be driving after drinking so much, and he knew this, but what could happen? The speed limit was slow the whole 3 miles back to his house and he wasn't a lightweight. He could handle driving after a few beers.

The two had the music blasting from the car speakers so loud that it could be heard from outside of the car. Jared was going on about something Dan didn't understand or really care about at the moment. They were almost home, their parents' house was five houses down on the left and everything was fine.

Suddenly, Dan could have sworn that some kind of animal had run across the road, but Jared hadn't seen it. Dan abruptly jerked the steering wheel to the left to dodge the non-existant animal and wasn't able to get his foot on the break until it was too late.

The car went up onto the curb and continued going and didn't stop until it smashed into another car. The impact caused glass to shatter everywhere and for the airbags to deploy. The music, still blasting, along with the sound of the crash, and car alarm woke just about everyone up on the small street.

People were stepping out of their homes, dressed in pajamas and ran over to see what had happened. Dan and Jared, both having suffered from minor injuries, dragged themselves out of the car and were insisting that they were fine. Dan's girlfriend, who happened to live at the house of the crash was holding onto her mother sobbing.

Dan walked up to her, almost tripping over a briefcase, (what was that doing there anyway?) and tried to get her to calm down, while Jared told his mother who was calling 911 that they didn't need an ambulance. Before Dan could reach Jessica she pulled away and refused to look at him.

Confused, he turned around and instantly knew what was wrong. The blood on the ground, the briefcase, Jessica unable to even look at him, his mouth dropped open. Jess's dad's body was pinned in between the two cars. He has been on his way to work.

Sirens could be heard in the distance as Dan dropped to the ground. From this moment on, because of one bad decision, his life would be completely different.
