ground z e r o;
her reckless abandonment tore the sky in two—
perfect, smoldering pieces—
while the smog smothered my careless smile
and the glittering city lights
beneath its clammy and rancid grip.

i can't feel them breathing anymore—
under the crushing, shredded concrete;
through the suffocating soot and ashes—
survivor, survivor, survivor?
but it's too late for them.

(a shrill and high, wailing voice, crying out for anyone,
anybody,
someone

mommy.)

can't you feel the heat even from a thousand miles away?
(our feet are scorched and blackened
and our hands doused in oil)

my vision is running into crimson and grey
as i stand at ground zero.
