Prologue
"Vampires. They have clearly been around here."
"Haven't they learned by now that this is our land?"
"They never learn. They're too stupid."
"True. Vampires have the mental capacity of a dodo bird."
"Dodo birds are extinct, Luna."
"Precisely, Carus." Luna smiled, showing her teeth.
Carus yipped in laughter. "Werewolves are far better than those blood sucking things."
"Of course we are! When haven't we been better than them?" Luna barked.
"Maybe when we defeat you you aren't?"
The two wolves suddenly found themselves face to face with a vampire.
"Oh, what's this? I have a silver knife, and wolves like you are unable to touch silver. Isn't that right, Carus?"
Carus growled. Luna glanced at him, and found her eyes drawn towards the scar where silver powder had been sprayed across his face, burning him. The fur had never grown back.
"You know that this is our land. And you may have silver, but we outnumber you," Luna growled, taking a step forward.
"That's what you think." Five more vampires appeared from behind the trees.
Luna and Carus began to back away.
"Get out of here, now."
"Sky," breathed Luna. "Thank god."
The pack leader advanced towards the vampires, the four other members of the pack, Star, Kaleigh, Marina, and Brand right behind him.
"Seven to six. I think that's fair enough," Brand growled.
"Especially since you barely count," Marina joked, nudging his shoulder with her head.
"You two can be so annoying," Kaleigh muttered.
"Marina and Brand glanced at each other, rolling their eyes.
"Oh, lets just deal with them now and get it over with," snarled Star.
"Oh, we will deal with them," Sky said softly.
"And how will you do that, snarl and bark at us?" said a blonde female vampire sarcastically.
Star tensed prepared to launch herself at the vampire.
Carus leaped in front of her. "Don't let them get to you like that," he whispered to her.
"But they-"
"Just don't."
"We've been over this before, Darek," Sky snarled softly. "This is our land; you can't come here. Not after the incident."
"That was a long time ago, Sky. Can't we just let it go?"
"No. Our kinds can't coexist unless we stay away from each other. We learned that when Romyo and Juliette died, ironically having similar names to the tragic couple created by Shakespeare," said Sky dryly.
"Yes, that was too bad about your sister, wasn't it Sky. But that likely won't happen again," Darek said calmly.
"I will tell you one last time, and if you don't leave then, we will attack. Now get out of here!" Sky snarled.
Darek smirked. "Make us."
Sky flicked his tail and the pack lunged towards the vampires. Luna instantly sank her teeth into the flesh of the vampire standing closest to her, who had made a rather bad choice choosing to stand barely a foot away from her. The vampire sreeched as its blood flowed from the wound. She let go.
"Yuck! Vampires taste horrible," she snarled, spitting out some of the blood that had flowed into her mouth.
"I know!" cried Marina. "Too bad they're so much fun to attack!" The vampire Marina was fighting suddenly sent her flying into a tree. Her silver pelt was stained with lood.
Are you alright Marina?" asked Brand running over to her.
"I'm fine; its mostly vampire blood. It'll take days to clean the filth out of my fur!" she complained, shaking her head before shooting back into the fray.
"Come on, let's get going!" Darek yelled to the other vampires. "The wolves are clearly not in a mood to negotiate at the moment. But we will be back later, Sky, you can be sure of that."
"Is everyone alright?" Sky asked after the vampires were gone.
"Yes, but Star has a twisted paw," Carus said.
"It'll be fine, its not serious. Good thing we heal quickly!" Star said. "Sky, what was Darek talking about? About Romyo and Juliette?"
Sky sighed. "My sister Juliette was a werewolf, like us. She fell in love with a vampire named Romyo. They met the same end as Shakespeare's tragic lovers, and ironically had the same names as them."
"I don't believe it!" exclaimed Luna. "How could she fall in love with a vampire?"
"I don't know," Sky admitted. "They say love is blind, but I don't think it could ever be that blind."
Marina sighed and leaned against Brand. "Lets just get out of here," she said. "Personally I'd like to get as far away from here as possible until it rains. The entire area reeks of death and decay. Oh that's right, the stench is the smell of vampires."
Sky nodded. "Marina's right. Let's go."
