I walked quietly down the hallway, minding my own business. That was when Winston walked over, engaging me in conversation.
"Hi, Naomi!" he greeted. "Do you have any plans for tonight? Because me and a few other friends are going out to the beach for a bonfire. And I think you should come."
I smiled, blushing slightly at the little twinkle that came from Winston's playful eyes. "Um, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to go, I'll just have to ask my da --" Something cold sploshed on my head, which distracted me from my words. I could see Winston being shoved away from me. I didn't recognize what went on until I saw him pass me, and the crushed Coke can fall to the ground.
My hair was sticky with the sweet soft drink, and part of my top was dampened. This was the final straw. I couldn't tolerate it anymore. Danny Thompson had become a menace in my life and he was about to get a piece of my mind. I dropped my books, which made a loud sound that resembled a gun shot. Let that be his warning.
I power - walked after him, where I saw him turn into the boys' bathroom. That didn't stop me, I punched the door opened and pointed at Danny's two goons. "You two! Get the hell out!" I shouted, nearly going to the top of my lungs.
His two friends looked at him questioningly, Danny nodded toward the door, and they left without a word. That left just me and him.
"Look, can you get this over with, I need -- "
"NO! I'm gonna talk and you're gonna listen! Ever since I got here, you have made my life Hell! Is there something in you that wants to make me just as miserable as you are? Because for the love of God, tell me now!" I ranted, shoving him backward.
"Don't touch me! Your freaky loser germs might be contagious," the older boy sneered at me.
"Oh my God! I hate you. You heard me, I HATE YOU. You make me sick to my stomach! Because you get your kicks out of making other feel as pathetic as you are! That's your problem. Misery loves company, but WHY ME? You never treat anyone as harshly as you do me! Am I just a toy for your amusement? I mean . .. Jesus, Danny, I -- "
"Damn it, Wayson!"
That was the second time I was interrupted by Danny that day. He took my face in his hands and smashed his lips on mine. My heart started to pump faster than ever before. I was unsure of how to react. But I didn't have time to respond, since he pulled away, taking a few steps back. I could finally see the frustration and longing in his eyes.
He punched the wall and stormed out of the room, leaving me alone, utterly confused, and soaked in Coca Cola in the boys' bathroom.
