Counting Steps

Kaitlin Fields

Five more steps
Just five until the darkness's black ribbons cover my body like silk
Smooth and sleek
Hesitantly, I look over my shoulder.

Four more steps
Just four until I will most likely regret this choice
but it is so inviting
and I wonder if it's worth it.

Three more steps
Just three until I wither and weep
so unwanted
the light is still calling me back

Two more steps
Just two until my pain is numbed
so easy, so simple
I hold my breathe.

One more step
just one until it's over
so close.

My pain is done
No more steps
none.
