Warmth Any Way
A/N A very raw poem about an abusive relationship, if you could think of any way to improve it I'd be grateful. It was inspired by an old Dave Matthews Band song called "Kind Intentions" which was played only once as a soundcheck in early 1994. (If you're interested you'll find it here: .com/watch?v=OY9oHBpRt_0)
Locked in your room
The long shadows dance with the silent gloom
Your head falls tiredly on the warm kiss of your bed
To be wrapped in the milk white sheet is the only retreat
The dress had worn lies on the floor, lifeless and torn
The dark splotches that dot your back help you keep track
Of all the times your lover's hand has made good on every demand
You tell yourself its only alcohol's haze that places hate into his gaze
But he is off to the bar to find Whiskey's sweet delight
Which will lead to another anger filled night
Slowly you breathe and think you might find the courage to leave
But your legs curl underneath the sheet in a sign of defeat
You realize what makes you stay: you look for warmth any way
You can only pray the sun will break the ice in his soul one day
