Someone To Chide
Whenever I do wrong
Or give way to foolish pride
When I give in to temper
There is someone there to chide.
She punishes and lectures,
Although I with cold disdain
Rebuff her words, she does it
Again and yet again.
Although I mightn't say it
I know within myself
That when she cuts away the waste
She gives me virtues wealth.
So cut away, dear Mother
For some day you will see
That your pruning and your cutting
Has made a better me!
