Once upon a time in a land far, far away, there was a young farm boy. Or perhaps a blacksmith's apprentice. Or was it a beggar or an orphan? Either way, he was there, and he was rather ordinary. One day, a mysterious figure gave the boy a sword and revealed that the boy was in fact the Chosen One, or Prophesied Hero of Legend, or the Vanquisher of the Darkness or something to that effect. The boy had a destiny deposited on his shoulders, and for some reason or another, had to flee the land he called home to go on a journey.

On aforementioned journey, the boy met many friends, including, but not limited to, a strong-headed female who he gradually falls in love with, a wise old mentor, a dancer with the gift of prophecy, a castle guard, a dragon (good or evil), a unicorn (usually good), an old enemy from his past, a grizzled old fighter, a member of the castle guard, and the lost, dispossessed heir to the country's throne.

With his companions, the boy fought the Darkness wherever it lurked, and slowly, his small band of warriors gained renown as heroes. Then, as the final battle drew close, the boy began to doubt his destiny, and wondered if in fact he was destined to be a fighter for the Dark. But somehow it is revealed that no, he truly is the Chosen Hero of Light or whatever it's called, and he fights for his cause with new-found strength.

Then, he destroys the Darkness, defeats the wicked army and dispels the evil that gripped the land, obviously with a liberal use of deus ex machina. Then, he and his friends live happily ever after.
