Dominant Vampires
Chapter 1 – Mistake
Catrin curiously peered outside into the large garden of her grandfather's small house. It had never failed to amaze her how such an enormous garden could have been built for a small house. She suspected that her grandfather might have done an extension to the original garden, but the reason for it, she did not know. The garden itself was rather spaced out, containing many wild trees and different plants.
A curtain of darkness had already settled over the house, which made any slight noise all the more projective. She inhaled the smoke emanating from the centre of the garden and spotted a fire lit next to an oak tree, which was surrounded by many people including her grandfather. She was rather surprised at the number of people that occupied the large circle. Some she recognised to be her school mates and others she had never seen before. A thing that she oddly thought they all had in common was that they all looked to be of the same age.
"Ah, Catrin! You've arrived. We've all been waiting for you", came he grandfather's warm voice as he spotted her entrance.
She smiled apologetically. "Sorry, Grandpa. I got held up in the traffic".
Someone snorted from within the circle and her eyes zeroed in on her rival. Kara was sitting towards the left of the circle, her head leaning against another female's shoulder and her legs crossed out in the ankles to portray a picture of relaxation and ease.
Catrin was about to send a glare her way when her grandfather placed a gentle hand on her shoulders and guided her to a seat on an empty log. She sat next to Cassie, her closest friend in school, and pulled up her knees to her chest for extra warmth. She didn't know why she was here, only that she was requested to arrive at her grandfather's house at 11. She was about to nudge her friend's shoulder and ask her if she knew what the meeting was about when her grandfather's voice broke across the silence.
"I know all of you are wondering the reason for this gathering," he began in a voice that was gentle yet didn't fail to garb everyone's attention. "it will be all explained in due time."
His eyes swept over the gathered group. "All of you here are the last remnants of our species", he paused again, letting everyone take in what he had said. Catrin wanted to interrupt and question what he meant by the term 'species', but his eyes landed on her and prevented her interference.
"Our species is none other then what most refer to as vampires. The majority of you will be half-bloods; this means that you will have inherited some genes such as: enhanced hearing and sight, the increase of speed, and the urge to uptake blood. Some of these symptoms should start showing within most of you when your genes get triggered on your seventeenth birthday.
However, there is also another way which the vampire tree branches off into; those are what we call Dominant Vampires. The name itself is rather self-explanatory. Unlike a normal vampire, a Dominant Vampire will require a mate that is equal to them of sorts. The date that will trigger their transformation remains a mystery; it can be a day before their birthday or even a year after their graduation; you just cannot predict the exact time."
Immediate whispers broke out across the circle. Grandpa gave the group a calculating glance to see how well they have taken the information in. He was rather pleased to note that most faces were lit in fascination and excitement. All except Catrin, who had her face cast towards the floor in a deep frown. He made a mental note to have a private word with her later.
"I can tell that the idea has not indeed repulsed any of you, so I am taking that as my cue to carry on. Anyone wishing to see me individually is welcome to after this meeting.
Now, within the first couple of months of the transformation, you are considered to be 'newborns'. Your powers will be out of control and you could get extremely dangerous to the others around you. So I advise that when the transformation takes place, you immediately come and seek refuge here. I will be here to teach you on how to control your powers.
Your eyes will be rather sensitive to light at first and the windows in this house are tinted to allow a certain amount to light. The change in diet also requires a regular intake of blood. You will feel very weak and tired when your first transformation has occurred.
I have considered all the necessary requirements and have tried my best to full-fill them. You parent's are already aware of this, and they too of course will offer their full support and guidance".
Once the speech was finished, Grandpa signalled that the meeting was over. A few teenagers hurriedly followed behind Grandpa to bombard him with questions. Catrin shakily got up on her feet and took two steps forward before clutching the tree for support. She had this weird feeling all over her body, a mixture of sensitive tingles and icy shards piercing her skin. She took in a deep breath, trying to labour her wild, erratic breathing.
It was then, through the fierce pounding of her heart that, she managed to catch a drift of the argument taking place near the lit fire.
"Are you going to give a reply, Kara? Or are you just gonna stand there and ignore me like you've been doing for the past week?"
The woman who was speaking wasn't someone Catrin recognised. She had a tall, lithe figure and was an inch or so taller than Catrin herself. While the other woman's features were pronounced and angular – sharp blue eyes and coal-black hair – Catrin's face was moulded into soft, delicate features – warm, hazel eyes and light, brunette hair.
The raven was currently poised with both hand folded and crossed over at the arms. If the woman though that it looked intimidating, she was sorely mistaken.
Kara didn't reply back; she was intently staring off into the night sky, her face schooled into a mask of suppressed calm.
"Damn, how many times do I have to apologise to you? I'm fucking sorry, alright! It was an accident!"
"Accident my arse, Eden. Don't give the me this bullshit! I saw you with my own eyes. You were too damn into it with Lauren to even notice that I'd come back into the flat to retrieve my car keys!", Kara exploded, having finally lost what little control she had.
Catrin still had no idea what the argument was about, but she found it quite fascinating so she perked up her ears to listen.
"Ladies, please calm down. What use is there over arguing? If you just talk it out amongst yourselves then ––"
"Fucking stay out of this Adrian. This is none of your business!" interrupted Kara, stopping a seemingly long speech from spouting out of Adrian's mouth.
Catrin couldn't help herself from retorting, "Oh, but how can one stay out of a business that had been put on display for all to see?" she taunted even in her state of near demolishment.
All the warning she received was a murderous glare before she felt the other woman's weight crashing on her. She felt herself being thrown against a tree; her back collided painfully against the branches before she fell down in a heap. She stood up with a groan and briefly wondered how the other woman had attacked her so fast.
The aches in her muscles felt even more enhanced as if they were trying to rip her apart from the inside. She felt something erupt and break free from within her as if an animal was trying to escape. She clutched onto a nearby tree tighter for balance.
Kara, who either didn't notice or care about Catrin's crisis, snarled a hand around the collar of her shirt and lifted her up. Catrin had a moment to ponder how the other female had gotten so strong before she went flying through the air, and landing about 20 or so metres from the lit fire.
But the huge miracle was that she didn't land sprawled out on her front like before.
No.
She had managed to land on both feet; her back legs were crouching down low, a right palm raised towards the ground to maintain balance. A growl exploded in the night, and it took her a while to realise it was her that had made such noise.
The remaining people still gathered around the circle were staring in wonder. But Catrin didn't know what was different this time that it had gotten the other's attention. Kara and Catrin fought a lot; it was like a dose of glucose for them to start the day off with a good, jolly fight.
Kara crouched down as well and bared her teeth at her, causing Catrin to pause momentarily in her tracks. Were those fangs she had just witnessed? Does that mean that Kara had already developed her vampire side? But she couldn't have – Kara's seventeenth birthday had yet to arrive...unless...
She gasped, as Grandpa's words came flooding back into her senses.
Kara was a Dominant Vampire!
What was Catrin going to do now? She couldn't possibly take down a dominant vampire. She was going to die, a slow painful death, and there was nobody to save her from such tragedy.
It was the slight panic and recoil that Kara needed; it had opened her to the perfect opportunity to attack. Kara pounced on the other female, tackling her to the floor with her. Catrin twisted her body just moments before she crashed to the ground, causing their positions to reverse. Catrin hurriedly straddled the other women, keeping Kara's wrists pinned above her head to prevent Kara from the aggressiveness about to be unleashed.
Revelling in her moment of glory at having succeeded, Catrin was about to retort a mocking comment at Kara, when the other woman suddenly buckled her hips forward and swapped their roles.
Catrin groaned at the impact the gravelly ground made on her sensitive back. Kara's face came into view, a lot closer than she would have preferred. And the bizarre thing was that Kara's face seemed to be getting closer and closer by the second. Catrin must be getting delusional.
However, when she felt a distinct feeling of a wet appendage licking her jugular, her eyes immediately widened.
"What the fuck? Get off me!", snarled Catrin, raising her hands and trying to push Kara off.
But the other woman didn't budge and seemed to be turning a deaf ear to her. Catrin turned her attention away from Kara, who had moved onto deeply inhaling at her neck, and called for help amongst the crowded teenagers.
"Don't just stand there you imbeciles. Go and get Grandpa!"
No one moved, either they were too shocked at the scene before them or were intrigued. It was Cassie, who finally broke out of her trance and rushed off inside the house.
But before Grandpa could arrive at the scene, sharp canines punctured her neck. She heard the suckling noise of her blood being drawn out from her body and being drank. Oddly, when the teeth had torn through her skin, she had barely felt pain at all. Her stiff body slowly started relaxing and she felt in heavenly bliss. At the same time, she was aware that she was losing consciousness rapidly. The last memory to pass through her brain was the sight of a shocked Kara with Catrin's blood trickling down her chin, before she passed out.
Next up: Kara discovers what her actions have led to – Kara and Catrin becoming bonded (mates).
