"Now class, let us take a look at this diagram right here," Our female professor for biopsychology said as she pointed with her red laser pen at the screen. "This is the central nervous system, mostly protected by bone and divided up into the brain and the spinal cord."
"Why didn't you text me back yesterday?"
"There are 70 more billion neurons in the brain than the spinal cord. As you can see, this is a very important function of the body and is very sensitive, if we anything were to go wrong here, it would be catastrophically detrimental to the person."
"I think I…blacked out,"
I scribbled down the slide as fast as I could, but alas I was never quick enough. Teachers always seemed to have it down to the second, whenever I was just about to finish writing down the last sentence of the lecture slide; they quickly pressed the next slide button. It was a freaking conspiracy. And, they never put the damn slides online. Oh, the woes of a college student.
"What?? Yesterday was a Monday, what on earth were you doing drinking on a Monday, you crazy!...And why wasn't I invited??"
I frowned grumpily as our professor continued to lecture on the Peripheral nervous system and the sub categories. I refuse to be cut off by my professor again, it's so not kosher. So, instead, I tried to listen to her. However, this was getting increasingly harder as my two friends next to me were loudly catching up. They were even starting to attract glares; it wasn't like we were sitting in the very back row too.
"Gary wanted someone to celebrate his 100 percent on his physics test with him. So he made me," Gina whispered, twirling her pen in her hand absentmindedly.
"Oh, he made you celebrate his test score, huh?" Our friend Hailey said obnoxiously, doing the quotation fingers around 'made' and 'celebrate'.
Gina gave her a death glare and said nothing.
"You guys, shut up, I can't listen to what our professor is saying," I hissed over at them, shooting them a look.
Hailey waved her hand dismissively at me and said to Gina, "So, you guys seeing each other soon?"
"…yes, why wouldn't we? We're friends," Gina said sassily back.
"Oh ho, mhmm, just friends, whatever you say," Hailey replied back with just as much sass.
Gina stayed silent for a moment and then hissed at her, "And just what is that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, nothing," Hailey said with fake nonchalance and then added, "If you can't figure it out yourself, you're not ready to know,"
Gina half glared half gawked at her and then whipped around to me.
"Reeeseeee! Hailey is being the biggest bully ever," Gina pouted.
I didn't pay her any attention. Did our teacher just say we have a test next week??
"Oh be quiet, you cry baby," Hailey admonished.
The bell rang, signaling the end of class. All at once, there was a great shuffle and bustle as students packed away their notebooks and exited the great lecture hall. I sighed and closed the pages of my miserable excuse for notes, and placed the notebook in my backpack.
"Whatever, whatever Hailey. I don't care anyways!" Gina huffed, slinging her backpack over her shoulder.
"Uh huh," Hailey smirked.
I rolled my eyes at the pair of them and led the way out of our aisle and out of the lecture hall. I pushed the great wooden doors of the building open and felt the crisp air touch my skin. Another beautiful autumn's day.
"We're meeting everyone for lunch at the Café right?" I asked tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, and wrinkling my nose.
"Yeah, Ian said to meet in front of the library," Hailey responded, still laughing at the somewhat disgruntled Gina. Hailey was known for taking the mickey out of you if she felt you deserved it. And in this case, I can't say Gina didn't deserve it.
"Okay, let's go," I said turning and heading in that direction.
"Oh wait, damn, who is that?" I heard Hailey remark behind me.
I turned around, with an eyebrow raised, and laughing, said, "What? Who are you gawking at now?"
Hailey was staring across the lawn at a tall guy walking towards the general direction of where we were headed. I had to shield the sun against my eyes with my hand, and squinting in the direction she was staring at, I saw…it was Jake. He's everywhere!
"Oh, that guy?" Gina remarked, who also was squinting against the sun.
"You know him?" Hailey exclaimed. "Who is he and is he single!"
I laughed and said, "C'mon, we're gonna be late,"
"Oh they can wait," Hailey said smirking deviously. "Now, Gina, tell me who he is!"
"Yeah, I don't think so," Gina said, now smirking with a satisfied smile.
"What? Girl, why not??" Hailey exclaimed, looking like a kid who just got her candy stolen from her.
"Karma's a bitch," Was all Gina said.
"OH please, me holding out information on you is way more for your own good than you holding out information on me. Gina, please! I haven't met any guys worthy of my attention lately!" Hailey practically begged.
"Uh…no," Gina said, with the sweetest tone ever.
I right up laughed out loud, causing Hailey to whack me in the butt.
"Ey! No need to get physical," I exclaimed, rubbing my butt and getting out of reach of her, and then said, "Jeez, lack of sexual contact makes for one grumpy Hailey,"
"SHUT UP REESE, you don't know what you're talking about!" Hailey shouted, flailing her arms.
I practically ran away from her and grinned back to see Hailey taking out her anger on Gina. Obviously, I reached the front of the library first. And not to my or anyone's surprise, the guys were there already. All looking a little pissed that they had to wait for us to get our lily asses there.
"What the hell took you guys so long?" Ian growled.
I walked up to them and said smoothly, "No need to get so grouchy, we were having a ladies emergency," Knowing if I actually told them the truth, they would never leave it alone.
"Uh, gross," Ian remarked with a face. "Ever heard of too much information, Reese?"
I smiled sweetly and replied, "You asked,"
"We're all hungry," Damien said, with a slight scowl.
"Yeah, me too dude," I replied. "You're not the only one who hasn't eaten since this morning,"
Damien just continued to scowl.
"Well, where are Gina and Hailey then?" Gary inquired.
I waved my hand behind me and said, "Coming,"
"They better hurry the hell up, whatever they're…doing," Ian muttered.
I simply chuckled to myself and thought how lack of food gave guys the worst tunnel vision ever.
"Hello Reese," A deep voice said to the left of me.
I practically felt my heart jump out of my chest as I clutched a hand to my fast beating heart, and said, "Jeez, trying to give me a heart attack or something!"
Jake smirked happily to himself and nodded.
I rolled my eyes at him and said to Damien, "What's he doing here?"
Damien raised an eyebrow and said, "I invited him."
I nodded to myself and looked back to see if Gina or Hailey were almost here yet. Hailey is totally gonna flip a shit when she sees Jake, it's gonna be great.
"Is that okay that I'm here?" I heard Jake inquire. He was staring rather intensely at the side of my head, and when I turned to face him, his gaze turned to my eyes. His eyes were questioning and seemed to pierce right through me, to the point where I was momentarily speechless.
"Of course it is," Gary said slapping Jake on the back with a loud thump.
"Of course, why wouldn't it be?" I repeated what Gary had said a little numbly, barely aware of what I was truly saying.
"Gina! You can just go and--" Hailey shouted and then stopped mid-sentence as she reached us. As I had expected, she was staring open-mouthed at Jake. Gina had run over in between Gary and Ian and was smiling cheekily.
"You guys finally got here," Damien said pulling a face.
Hailey was still staring at Jake. He was looking around at the rest of us, with a questioning look at us as he looked back at her. The best Hailey could do was close her mouth and smile meekly. I've never ever seen her this quiet before.
"Hailey, sweetheart, this is Jake," I said smirking, giving Gina a huge grin which she whole-heartedly gave back.
Before either of them could say anything, Ian said abruptly, "Jake this is Hailey, blah blah blah, let's get on with it. I'm fucking starving," And walked off.
"Yeah, let's go," Gary said swinging an arm around Gina's shoulder and following him.
Damien raised an eyebrow at me. I just shook my head and said, "Don't worry about it babycakes," I pulled Damien with me and let Jake and Hailey get to know each other.
