He watched Ashley across the room. Standing too far away to really tell, Eddy knew that the dance's lights would be flickering off the bright red Irish curls, highlighting freckles with each pass. He knew the green sweater Ashley was wearing highlighted those sparkling green eyes and the slender body.
With a deep breath, he pushed off the wall he'd been leaning against and headed over to the table where Ashley was sitting with two giggling girls. He tried to ignore the loud thumping of his heart, the heat of the dance area, the pounding of the music in his ears. He wanted quiet peace as he approached Ashley, but at a high school dance, quiet was hard to come by. You'd have better luck with dark corners.
"Would-you-like-to-dance?" It wasn't loud enough and the girl to Ashley's right looked up, her eyes widening slightly as she shyly smiled.
"No...No, sorry," Eddy mumbled, his face darkening as Ashley finally turned around and faced him at the girl's comment.
The green eyes were sharply intelligent and curious and Eddy could feel them appraising him. His face darkened and he began to scramble backward.
"Maybe if you ask again, I'll say yes," Ashley said before he could get too far.
Eddy froze as if dunked in the local lake in the middle of February. His friends had all done it on a dare. He tried to shake the icy lingerings from his limbs, "Would...would you like to dance?"
The two girls said nothing, just watched with quiet observation as Ashley stood. "Sure."
They headed to the dance floor and Eddy could already feel the eyes beginning to turn toward them. But Ashley didn't seem to mind as they found a spot among the other dancing couples. Instead he just slid his arms around Eddy's neck with a small smile. "Your name's Eddy, right?"
"Y-yeah." Eddy tentatively put his hands on Ashley's slim hips, controlling the distance between them just as much as Ashley's hold. "I'm surprised you agreed to dance with me."
"Well," he said with a small shrug and a tilted smile, "I can't say no to a brave boy willing to ask."
