How could a kiss in a stupid game of dares change my life?

I feel so alone now, I've moved to California from England. You'd feel alone if your parents dragged you away from the one place you could call home. I miss my friends... heck, I even miss England's awful weather.

I now stood in the corridor of what was my new high school. If I was back in England I'd just be leaving school. I just stood alone, as I watched groups of friends walking past. All indulged in their own conversations. I took a piece of paper out of my back pocket, examining it closely. It had a list of all my lessons, and teachers' names. I decided it would be a good idea to find my homeroom before I got trampled on by a stampede of students when the bell went.

I soon enough found my homeroom; just as I did the bell rang. I walked into the classroom. It was an English room, with different quotes from Shakespeare's plays. I was busy looking around the room when I was interrupted.
"Ah, you must be the new student?" I jumped, I thought I was alone. "I'm your homeroom teacher, Mr. Deaken." my homeroom teacher held out a hand. I shook it while taking a look at him. He must have been in his late thirties. He had short brown hair and a pair of glasses perched on the end of his nose.

"I'm Rachael, Rachael Parker." I replied shyly.

"Nice to meet you, just take a seat Rachael. The other students should arrive shortly." I nodded before resting my bag on the floor and taking a seat near the back of the room. Soon my class mates began piling into the room; they stared and whispered as they entered the room when they noticed me. I tried not to make direct eye contact with anyone but failed. When all of my classmates had arrived Mr. Deaken announced that I was a new student, I hung my head in shame as he motioned me forward to the front of the class.

"Okay, we have a new student with us today. Introduce yourself?"

"Hi, um... My name is Rachael. I've just moved to California from England." I almost whispered.

"Okay, I need someone to show Rachael around. Preferably someone, in a few of her classes?" Mr. Deaken announced.

Nobody shifted. Great.

"Sir, I'll show her around." A boy with long shaggy hair said, raising his hand. He stood up pulling his bag

over his shoulder and walked to the front.

"Thank you Ross." Mr. Deaken nodded.

I walked out of the homeroom with Ross, he was examining my timetable. "Okay, so first lesson you have calculus. Lucky for you I'm in the same class to save you from boredom." he smiled.
I returned the smile and remained silent.

"No need to be shy, I'm a nice guy."

"I know, sorry."

"Don't apologise. Anyway, why did you decide to move to California?"

"My dad got a better job offer here, he insisted we all move. I didn't really want too." I answered.

"Ah, right. I love your accent Rachael."

"I have an accent?" I smiled.

"Yeah, you probably don't realise since you are so used to it."

I just smiled, again. We continued the rest of the walk to calculus in silence.

I entered the calculus class with Ross beside me, he went over to the teacher and explained that I was a new student. She looked over too me.

"Hello, I believe your name is Rachael, and you have just moved from England?" she asked. I nodded in reply. "Welcome to America!" she smiled brushing some of her long blonde hair out of her face.

"You can take a seat next to Ross for today." she said pointing to an empty desk. I sat beside Ross and she begun the lesson.
She started muttering on about some equations and I begun daydreaming.

"Rachael."

"Rachael!" Ross snapped his fingers in front of my face and I returned to earth.

"Sorry."

"Lesson has finished Rachael, you have double sports. So I'll wait outside the changing rooms after it's finished. I'll walk you over there now." I just nodded and followed Ross as he left the room.

I didn't bring anything to change into since it was my first day, so I was excused and just sat at the side and watched the other girls playing hockey. Again, some of them kept glancing over to me. I felt uncomfortable and shifted my gaze to something else. I heard some girls walking over too me. Great.

"Hey." the first one said, she had brown shoulder length hair, and deep grey eyes.

"Hi." I smiled back.

"Wow, she really is British," the brown haired girl smiled looking back to her friends who just nodded. "My names Caitlyn, yours is Rachael, right?"

"Yes, it is."

"We heard you were really shy. How's your day been so far?"

"Yeah, I guess I am a bit. It's been stressful, especially finding classes." I replied with a smile. I looked at the girls surrounding Caitlyn.

"Oh, this is Becky, Sam and Frankie." she smiled pointing to the girls in turn. I smiled at each of them, they did the same. They all looked nice, but that Frankie... That was her name right? She hadn't stopped looking at me, since they had arrived. But it was a different look from what the other girls gave me. I waved it off.

"Anyway, we were wondering if you wanted to eat lunch with us today?" Becky spoke up, she had jet black hair, it looked like she had dyed it. It couldn't be natural.

"I'm already eating with someone today, sorry."

"Don't worry, maybe you could eat with us tomorrow?" Sam, another of Caitlyn's friends spoke up.

"Yeah, sure."

"Okay, well we'll see you later maybe?" Sam asked.

"Yeah, see you." I waved as they walked off.

They were nice enough. I sat there daydreaming for the rest of the lesson, until the bell went.

I exited the changing rooms; Ross was waiting outside like he said. "Want to grab some lunch he asked?" I nodded and followed behind him again.

I queued up beside him with a tray. "Rachael, let me warn you. Some of the food here is actually rank. So I'd stick to anything fresh." we both laughed at his joke. I paid for my lunch and followed Ross.

"Want to meet some of my friends?" he asked.

"Yeah, I don't mind."

"Okay, I see them over here. Just follow me."

We sat at a table that was full of girls and about two other boys.

"Hey guys, this is Rachael. She's just moved here from England."

I then realised it was those girls from before. I smiled at them as I sat down. "Oh hey Rachael." Caitlyn smiled.

"Ah, you two know each other?"

"Yeah, Rachael was in our Sports lesson. We were talking to her earlier."

I looked over to the two other boys on the table. "Those two idiots are Tyson and Leon." Ross smiled.

"Hey babe." one of them smiled.

"Hey." I smiled.

"I'm Tyson, but just call me Ty."

"Tyson is gay, not hard to tell by how he dresses though." Becky spoke up from before.

"What's wrong with how I dress Becks?" he asked looking a bit shocked.

"Well, let's just say you dress way more fashionable than Ross and Leon here, Ty."

"I'll take it as a compliment then Becks." he laughed.

"They're always like this." Ross whispered too me.

"So yeah, that moody shit there is Leon." Ross laughed, brushing his hair out of his face.

"Sod off." Leon glared at Ross.

"See." I laughed at Ross.

"Hey guys, are we all still going to Frankie's this weekend?" Caitlyn asked.

"Me and Sam are going out Hun. So we can't make it."

"Aw, maybe next time, Is everyone else still going?"

"Yeah" everyone chimed altogether.

"Rachael, why don't you come along?" Caitlyn asked.

"I'll feel rude intruding."

"Don't worry, Frankie you don't mind do you?"

"Sure, whatever." Frankie replied, looking at me. She flicked her blonde hair out of her face. It was short with a long sweeping fringe. It suited her.

"Frankie's a moody shit as well, Rachael." Ross grinned, everyone laughed, except Frankie who just glared at him.

Everyone went quiet for a minute, and then Frankie stood up. I didn't realise how tall she was, she was also very slim.

"Right, I'm going. See you later."

Everyone but me and Leon waved as she left.

"She is so on her period." Ty said.

Leon burst out laughing; he bit his lip too stop himself. He had a lip ring, and a few other piercings I noticed. He then stood up when Becky did.

"We are going as well." Becky smiled as she reached for Leon's hand almost dragged him away.

The bell went minutes later; I stood up with Ross and headed to the homeroom.

"Right, here is my mobile number." Ross smiled as he handed me a scrap of paper.

"Thanks. I'll text you later Ross."

"Good, and think about Frankie's this weekend it will be fun, trust me."

"I will, my mum would probably be happy to see me out somewhere." I said, before Ross pulled me into a bear hug.

"See you tomorrow, Rachael" he waved.

****

I made my way back to my new home; my mum and dad were out. Probably at work still. I decided to text Ross, who replied instantly.

I would definitely say today turned out better than I thought.
