morgan, don't you remember?
we were seven years old
and you and dylan were so deeply in love.

we stood outside at recess one day -
i think it was in september -
and we gave you a wedding.
the third graders laughed at us
and the first graders,
so much younger than we thought we'd ever been,
watched enviously,
imagining their own first marriages.

we took leaves and dandelions -
back then, those were the prettiest flowers -
and decorated the soccer net
so you could have a house.

and all recess long, you held hands and smiled
and danced and ran and played on the swings together.
and we followed you around with gifts of
gumball rings and pencil sharpeners.

then the bell rang, and we went inside,
and the next week,
dylan loved amanda and you loved tyler.

wasn't it so much easier, morgan?
don't you remember?
don't you miss it?
