Chrissy couldn't help but look at her surroundings. She met Davis at Vincent's café for lunch. She didn't think this was a good idea but Davis insisted. She kept her hands folded waiting to hear what he had to say. No, she took that back. What did he want from her this time?
"So?" And here we go. "I need money as soon as possible."
She laughed and unfolded her hands. Her foot tapped a few seconds at a time. "Why?"
"What do you mean, why? I'm jobless. I'm broke. I'm on the verge of being kicked out of my apartment. What other reason would there be?" He said irritated.
There were a few she could think of. She leaned back in her chair. Her foot tapped faster. "You could fix that, you know."
His head shook. "I'm looking. God, why not be my sister and not my mother. She flinched at those words.
"Look, I just want you to find something. Honestly this can't go on forever."
Tapping came from the other side of the table matching her rhythm. This conversation would be going nowhere. Not if both of them were getting impatient with each other.
A crack on a glass came from the other table making her jump. She turned to look at the table to make sure they were alright when her eyes caught someone she didn't want to see. She held her breath and forgot to exhale.
"What's wrong?" She turned back to her brother. Crap, this could not be good. Her fingers tapped the table. She had to get him out of here. She looked down at her cell that sat next to her. She still had twenty minutes until she had to go back to work. She watched him eat. Davis cherished his food and he still had half a meal. He wouldn't dare leave his food. He liked each meal down to the last bite.
"You know what? I left my sweater in the car, could you go get it for me?"
Davis looked at her like she was insane. "Get it yourself." He lifted his fork and took another bite of his pasta. It dropped onto his chin. You couldn't take the man anywhere. She saw Patrick looking around. His grey eyes were scanning the crowd in the restaurant. She crossed her fingers in hopes he didn't see her or Davis. She couldn't take that chance though.
"Fine, I'll do it." She replied to Davis. He nodded his head in satisfaction and continued to eat. She moved along behind a waiter and than a customer. It was crowded enough, he missed her. She made it to the door. The door closed behind her. Who knew what she was going to do now that she was outside.
Her short fingers ran through her long brown hair. She tried to think of her next move. Her black jeep came into view. She decided she could take baby steps to her jeep to kill time. She did just that; one baby step, second baby step, third baby step. Two minutes later she made it. Keys were pulled out of her jean pocket.
"It's a bit hot out for a sweater, isn't it?"
Her keys fell out of her right hand and hit the pavement. A rough looking hand touched the keys and brought them to her. They met her hand. Warmth went from her finger tips to her head. "It's air conditioned inside." She replied, even though after his touch she no longer felt a chill.
"Ah, I see." He said with a smile that made her weak in the knees. He was really killing her today and he only had been in her presence a minute.
"So what brings you here?" Her eyes closed for a second. That was the best she could come up with? What the hell was wrong with her?
He smirked. "Well this is a place to eat."
She nodded. "That it is."
He moved in closer. "Are you here alone?"
A gulp went unnoticed as she looked up at him. "I am." He raised an eyebrow in disbelief. She kept a straight face to show she wasn't lying.
His arms crossed. "I see."
She wanted to change the subject quick. "So the night of the wedding, what happened?"
He moved closer, forcing her to lean into the jeep. "What about it?" She smelled cool mint from his breath.
"How did you get Matthew's jacket on fire?"
His palm touched the jeep next to her. "Why do you think it was me? Maybe it had been you."
"How could it have been me?" She stuttered.
"I don't know. I'm wondering the same thing. No human has ever been known to do that."
Her eyes closed. She could still smell cool mint. She felt him touch her shoulder. "You are no human." He said.
She opened her eyes wide. "Ah, last time I checked, I was."
His head shook. "No you're not. There is something about you, but I can't put my finger on it." She tried to cross her arms but he left no room for her. She kept them at her side. "You're no demon but you would be a –"
"What could I be?"
He sniffed her hair. "It's impossible though. There hasn't been a female in centuries." If she could she would point her index finger to her head and spin it. The man was crazy. "I need to look into this. This could change everything."
"What the hell are you talking about?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"It's time we talked." His body tensed. He turned his head to the restaurant. "We better go now." He didn't give her time to say anything. He took her by the elbow and moved her to his blue SUV.
Davis took a napkin and wiped his chin. Where was Chrissy? She should have been back ten minutes ago. He moved to get up before the check came when a tall man with blonde hair as bright as the sun and blue eyes came over to him.
"Can I help you?" He asked the man.
The man smiled and sat down in Chrissy's empty chair. He picked up the glass that Chrissy had a drink out of and looked at it. "Why yes, you can. I'm here for your sister and I'm afraid I can't leave without her."
