The Lonely Hearts Wall was somewhat of a popular feature at the First City Saloon.
If you were lonely, and you wanted to take a chance at finding someone to get rid of said loneliness, you put a note on the wall, explaining your desires. If someone liked what they read, they took the sheet and contacted you the way you asked them too. Usually by email or text messages. Only the really desperate people insisted on a face-to-face meeting.
The wall was by the door just as you came in. A lot of people come around just to put a note in. Sometimes, they would hide in a corner to see if anyone seemed interested. But nobody wanted to be caught perusing "the wall for desperate people", as people in town affectionately called it. Lepers had it better than anyone caught near that wall.
But for a lot of people, it was your best chance at finding love – or a temporary scratch to your itch.
Even though I intended to follow the rules like everyone else, I knew how desperate I was. I'd been stuck in this town for over a year. Came for love, was left with heartache and sorrow. Had a good job, but didn't have that many friends. My heart yearned for companionship. I didn't want to feel like a loser all the time. I wanted validation. I wanted to smile for a little while.
I didn't want to be alone. I didn't know what I wanted beyond that.
So with shaky hands, I put the note on the lonely hearts wall. I make sure I'm discreet, that no one sees me. Expecting everything and nothing, I walk away before anyone sees me. The secretiveness makes my heart race.
My note is simple and to the point.
I need you here, so come and fine me.
Come here and take my loneliness away.
Author's Note: Don't know where I'm going with this. Haven't written a story in a long time, but now, I feel like writing. I feel inspired so I hope you enjoy it. Thanks ~! -M.N.
