~Chapter One- Meeting an Old Friend~
Diana, the goddess of the moon, had seen Apollo, her brother and the goddess of the sun, fall in love with Helena, an Earth woman. She talked with her brother and she knew that if he didn't have Helena soon he would live with a broken heart or die from it, which was horrible because if Apollo died then the sun's warmth would die with him. She went to her father, Jupiter, who was the king of all gods.
"Oh Jupiter, my brother Apollo, has fallen in love with a beautiful Earth woman. Could you make Apollo an Earth man so he could live with her? Then have Helios take over Apollo's place." Diana asked.
"Absolutely not! He is a god and a god should only have a goddess as a wife!" Jupiter refused.
But Juno, the wife of Jupiter, feeling the love Apollo felt for Helena by the sun shining on her, disobeyed Jupiter and made Apollo a human. Jupiter was mad at Juno, but forgave her after seeing how happy Apollo was with Helena. He made it so that Apollo was the king of Miskel, a magical world that only the subjects that Apollo would rule knew of it. He took Helena as his wife and thanked Jupiter and Juno for his good fortune. Helena and Apollo have ruled Miskel ever since.
They have three children, Julia is the youngest at age eleven. She has fiery red hair, a freckled face, crystal clear eyes, blood red lips, and a nose that seemed always turned up in disgust. Susan is thirteen years old with light brown hair running down to her waist, deep brown eyes that appeared to be iced over with the coldness of her heart. She has light ruby lips that pouted whenever she didn't get her way. Then there is the eldest child, Laurie is a brunette that has hair that flows down past her shoulders, warm hazel eyes that shine at the world. She has long legs that never seem to end, and a natural grace that made her sisters jealous of her.
Laurie walked through the royal gardens, silently thinking to herself. "Why does my life bore me so? I have my life in front of me and I do not make choices for myself. I just want a different life, one filled with decisions of my own." Laurie wished. The princess did as she was told and everyday the same events happened. Her father never understood why Laurie didn't like her life as much as her sisters.
"Ma'am, it is time to have the afternoon feast," said a maiden named Cynthia.
"Yes, I'll arrive soon, you may go down now," commanded Laurie. Cynthia nodded and left the gardens. The soft wind blew in Laurie's hair as she looked down at the beautiful lilies and violets that ran across the pathway. After a few minutes, Laurie was still standing there, she seemed to be waiting for someone. Minutes passed and no one was there, Laurie started walking away.
"Laurie, don't leave yet! I'm here, I am sorry that I'm so late. I had trouble passing the guards, they are everywhere," called a girl out of nowhere. Laurie turned around to see a fifteen year old girl. She had waving blonde hair that was as long as Laurie's hair and baby blue eyes. She had a small round nose and cherry red lips that would smile at Laurie. She was about four inches shorter than Laurie and her grace was also well.
"You are extremely late, Maria, I spent twelve minutes waiting for you! But I know that those guards are everywhere since you stole a plateful from the kitchens. So, how's you is your mother handling?" Laurie asked her friend, Maria.
"Well, she's doing fairly well, but I must say she seems disappointed in me for ... well you know what I am talking about." Maria replied. The two had been best friends for five years. Maria thought back to the time when she met the kind Laurie.
Five years ago Maria had been forced to take a loaf of bread. Her mother was ill and she hadn't been able to attend work at the palace. Maria's father had died during a fight when he had worked at the palace for the king. Nearly dying, Maria's mother sent Maria to a bakery nearby the palace. She walked down the road to the bakery and saw that a loaf of bread cost more than the little she had. Her mother was extremely thin and Maria had no choice but to steal the loaf of bread. She ran down the road with the bread cradled in her arms as the guards ran after her, threatening her with their swords.
Just as they were catching up on her a yelp was heard through the air. "Stop! Leave her alone," cried Laurie.
"Oh thank you, thank you so much!" said Maria bowing before Laurie. "You are so kind."
Laurie looked down at the eleven year old girl. Laurie hated when people were treated badly for no reason or a bad reason. The guards could have killed her on their own please.
"My princess, she was stealing from the bakery," the leader of the guards said.
"I must be punished." Maria said with her head hanging.
"May I ask what she was stealing?" Laurie asked politely.
"She took a loaf of bread," answered the guard.
"A loaf of bread, and you go right away and attack her? This is no reason to be punished, I'm sure she had her reasons. I will appoint a private meeting where we can talk about this." Laurie told Maria.
Maria lit up brightly. And when the meeting was held Maria told Laurie of her mother and the whole truth of what happened. "Well, I see no harm in trying to make your mother live. Honestly I think that the guards should be punished for never giving people the chance to explain themselves." Laurie answered at the end of Maria's story. Maria was sent home with more than just a loaf of bread but platefuls for the two and since that day, Laurie and Maria had been friends.
