See Me

To the world,

I am nothing more than

Another insignificant

Human being.

Just another humanoid;

One life

Of the six billion

On this planet.

To my country,

I am an American.

Another person

Who will one day be able to vote,

And thus have some part

In deciding this country’s future leaders.

But do they know me?

Do they see me?

No.

To my state,

I am a Texas citizen.

To my city,

I am just part

Of the four million in it.

To those at my school,

The teachers and principles,

I am just another number,

Another person to get grades,

To pass or fail.

To the students at my school,

Those who see me occasionally

In the halls.

They see a young girl,

Just trying to get to her classes

Before the bell rings.

They don’t see me.

Not in a way I’d like to be seen,

Anyway.

Those in my classes,

They see a quiet, smart,

Asian girl.

Who always obeys,

Is always on time,

And who is kind.

Usually.

They do not see me,

Either.

Perhaps,

If they’ve been acquainted with me,

They know of my love for God.

My slight obsession with anime.

My desire to become a

Professional musician,

To perform solo,

With the London Symphony Orchestra backing me up.

If they talk to me,

They’ll probably know of my yearning

To learn Japanese.

Or my hobby

Of writing.

So many people,

And yet they do not see.

They do not see the person inside of me,

Longing to be seen.

Wanting recognition.

Like the song says,

‘You don’t see me’.

It’s true;

No one

Sees me.
