Autumn Leaves

As we say our goodbyes and turn away,

A chapter in the story of our lives has ended.

This fateful October day

Has sundered something truly special.

As I stare out into the river,

The start of many lonely nights,

The realization of all I have lost

Shatters what remained of my broken heart.

All the I love you's in the world

Will not bring her back.

And although she is not gone eternally

It leaves me to wonder how often we will meet again.

The chill brings me back

And I begin to cry for the first time in a long while.

She knew me better than anyone else,

Almost better than I knew myself.

Out of the corner of my eye

I caught a pair of leaves falling to the ground.

My ever-poetic mind had but one thought,

"Our lives are falling with the autumn leaves…"
