"Angels and Devils Can Never Be"
Angels. Devils. Two opposite sides, fighting for dominance and survival. They have been around for millions of years; guiding and leading people to the righteous path, or luring them right into the trap. No one could have thought that the two sides could be friends? And even fall in love with each other? They're a world apart, so how can it all work? And with a prophecy that they're both tied down to, will they have a chance? Or will one sacrifice himself for true love?
"Lesser-devil Lilith. You are called today to be bestowed with an important task." A hoarse and ominous voice said.
A girl with short russet-colored hair and soft ringlets adorning the side of her face was standing before a dark throne. She had hazel irises and she was wearing a black one-shoulder dress that reached her ankles. She was a lesser-devil, so to say, yet she has no horns. Exactly. She was a lesser-devil, and they were not yet granted the atrocious abilities the full-time devils had, and the horns as well. She did have fangs, although their fangs weren't as threatening as vampires' had. She also had wings that were tainted with a deep black.
"I am here, Master Charon." She replied with a curtsy to her master.
"You wish to be a Devil, am I right?" the voice asked.
"I certainly wish to be a full-time Devil, Master." She replied monotonously.
"I can grant you your wish, but you must do one last task for me as a lesser-devil." The voice said.
"Anything for you, Master. I would be most delighted to fulfill the task that you shall bestow upon me." She replied, not taking her eyes from the ground.
She was smiling. And that was maybe because after years of torment, she was made into a lesser-devil. After several years of waiting for her promotion to a full-time Devil, she was finally getting it. But it was too easy, and she knew something was up. This was it. She had one more thing to do before she gains her promotion.
"I assume you have heard of the prophecy?" the voice asked her. She shook her head, not having the slightest idea of what it is.
"It is the prophecy regarding the son of a lesser-devil and an angel who has the greatest powers on Earth. Despite his heritage, he shall be the best candidate in being the next right hand to Hell's throne. Your task is to convince him to go to the dark side, in allegiance to sustaining the power of our side. Surely, he is unaware of his powers and heritage, so you must bring it out from him. If he joins heaven, then all Hell would be defeated forever. We would be banished even from our own world. But if he chooses to be an ally of the darkness, then the Armageddon will take place on Earth at this instance, and nothing will be able to stop it. We will take over of the Earth." The voice ordered.
"I will do everything that I can to complete this task, Master." She replied whilst looking up to where her master was.
Charon, Lilith's master, was seated on a throne out of skulls. Fire was surrounding him, and his throne stood on a mark of a pentagram on the ground. He had bronzed skin and raven hair, and his eyes were crimson. He had a muscular physique, and he had large black wings on his back. His whole appearance may have seemed odd, but the most eye-catching oddity he had was that his pupils were dilated in every second that passed by.
"I will count on you, Lilith. Do not disobey or fail me, because you know the punishment for either of the two." He warned her.
"I will give you time to get ready until tomorrow, but you must cross the veil to the realms of Earth the day after tomorrow. From then on, you have but thirty days to complete your task. You may now leave."
With those last words, a huge sea of fire engulfed the man sitting on the throne, and soon enough he had disappeared from it. Lilith left the room with a huge grin on her mouth that bared her fangs. She made her way to her quarters, a room with purple walls and a four-poster bed with black and purple velvet pillowcases, a blanket and sheets. She was surprised to see a man lying down on her bed; legs sprawled on the velvet sheets. To her surprise and panic, she threw the nearest thing she got her hand on to the man. Unfortunately, the man had great reflexes and caught the perfume bottle in his hand.
"Hey! Is this what I get for a 'welcome back'? Because if it is, I wouldn't have visited you first of all people." He teased. He had a muscular build, porcelain-like skin, flaming red hair, hazel eyes and black wings. He looked like a reincarnation of Adonis and a demigod. Sadly, his beauty was corrupted with his Devil form.
"I wouldn't have reacted like this if only you advised me the day before that you were coming." She said in a grunt, yet looking apologetic at the man.
"What? So I've been stripped off the privilege of barging into my sister's room nowadays? Even wanting to see her? What a cruel world." He mocked.
"Yes and no. This world is cruel because it is Hell that we're talking about, and no, you are not being stripped off the privilege in wanting to see me. But, you are required to understand the meaning of 'Privacy', Fenrir." She said while drawing quotation marks with her fingers.
"Privacy, schmrivacy. Whatever. I just came here because I wanted to see you now that I'm back, and because I wanted to wish you luck before you cross the veil." He said, sitting upright and leaning on the headboard of her bed.
"Geez. Thanks. That helped a lot." She said with sarcasm evident in her tone.
"Enough with that. I just wanted to tell you that you should be more careful out there. Lesser-devils are not as powerful as Devils are. You may be more prone to danger than you've ever imagined."
"Look what you've done, Fenrir! Now I'm scared out of my mind! Thanks for the advice, brother." Venom was dripping with every word that came out of her mouth.
She turned to glare at her brother, but was shocked to see he wasn't there anymore. She sighed deeply as she continued to pack her things. She didn't feel the need to bring her clothes and stuff. The only things she brought with her were her book of Dark rituals and the pendant her late father gave her. It was the thing she treasured most; a ruby pendant. She never really knew what it was for, but felt the need to bring it with her all the time.
On the said day of her departure, her brother Fenrir showed no sign of presence. Not a single feather nor a strand of his flaming red hair was seen. Her heart sank upon realizing that her brother wasn't even sending her off on the start of her mission. Without sparing a second glance to the people behind her, she looked up to the milky portal.
This portal was the mystical door that her father made for Hell's inhabitants travel to the surface of Earth. It seemed funny to her. When she was an Imp, she boasted that she'll never cross this portal in her life. And there she was. About to cross the very same door she stood before. With one deep inhale, she walked to the other side of the portal. She was almost at the other side, but then she heard a voice calling out for her.
"Stop! Please, Lilith. You don't have to do this!" he shouted.
It was too late. She already crossed the barrier. As much as she wanted to go back, the barrier already pulled her in.
She arrived at an unfamiliar destination; a dark alley with a hobo warming himself with a bonfire in a metal bin. She felt cold, wearing only a black drape on herself. She hid behind a wall, frightened that she would be exposed to the human world. With a snap of her fingers, all the traces of being a Devil disappeared. She snapped her fingers again and the transformation began. She was now wearing a schoolgirl outfit; a plaid skirt, a long-sleeved blouse, and a winter blazer. She walked endlessly, passing by numerous shops and houses along the way. After what felt like centuries of walking, she fell on her knees in front of a bungalow. It was a Victorian-inspired house with purple walls and a white roof. After living in Hell for 16 years, she was never accustomed to the cold. After all, Hell was an inferno. She felt so weak and restless. She lost consciousness, and the next thing she knew, it wasn't that cold anymore.
She woke up in a room full of rock band posters, all containing the name "Paramore" in it. She was wrapped up in a thick blanket and surrounded by pillows. She looked around the room without standing up.
"Whoever this person is, he was kind enough to take me in. and VERY addicted to this 'Paramore' band."
"I guess I am addicted to Paramore." A voice said.
She turned her head towards the door and saw a brunette man with a muscular build and tantalizing emerald orbs. He was leaning on the door frame, eyeing her suspiciously.
"Who are you, and where am I?" she asked the man.
"This is my room. You are in my house, and I am Hunter, Hunter Murdoch." He replied as he walked towards the bed.
"What did you do to me when I was unconscious?" she bombarded him.
"Whoa there. I took you under my care and this is what you do to me?" he said as he raised both his arms in surrender.
"Sorry." She mumbled.
He just nodded and walked out the door. She wondered what she's done to him to make him walk away like that.
'What do you think you're saying, Lilith. You're a Devil. You're not supposed to be kind. Wait. Scratch that. I'm a Lesser-Devil. It gives me the right to have mixed personalities.' She thought to herself.
She heard footsteps approaching the room. She snuggled deeply into the bed, wrapped herself with the thick comforter, and pretended to be asleep. She peeked and saw Hunter undressing his shirt. She tried to choke back her screams, and she succeeded in doing so. She continued to peek, and something struck her. It was a pretty sight, you know, seeing he had a very nice physique. But she was shocked when she saw the pentagram on his left shoulder.
The pentagram is the symbol of the Devil, but his was different. His pentagram was inside a glowing circle that looked like a halo. Maybe, this was the Mark when you have both opposing blood coursing in your veins.
"You have the sacred pentagram!" she exclaimed as she broke out of her shelter made of the comforter. He was surprised, so he wore a new shirt right away.
"What is wrong with you!" he shouted.
"You have the sacred pentagram! Don't you know how much I wanted to find you?" she asked him.
"So I do have it. What's it to you?" he glared.
"Okay. I'm going to tell you now. I am a Lesser-Devil. I was chosen to find you. Now come with me. I will introduce you to a world that you belong to, a world where you are king." She tried to be as enticing as possible.
"Believe me, I think your offer is great, but I know what kind of creatures you are. And I know I'm half…you. I'm a half-Devil. But I prefer to be in Heaven's side."
"So I'm just going to die? Okay. If that works for you, then fine. Go ahead and stay with the Angels."
"Wait. Your life depends on this?" he asked with worry evident in both his eyes and tone.
"Yes." 'Bingo, Lil. He's just too kind.' "My Master said that I'd perish if I didn't follow him and convince you within a month."
"Okay. Let's resolve this. I'll let you stay for a month. If you're able to convince me that I should join you, then I will join you. But if you can't, then I cannot do anything more to help you."
"Oh. Okay." She muttered.
She knew it. She had the chance to convince him into joining the darkness. Sure, he was kind, but that didn't mean he couldn't be coaxed into joining them. She looked at him with her round eyes, trying to make him succumb to her, and they engaged in a staring match. In that position, she got a better view of his face. She was able to examine his whole face; his emerald eyes that had a warm glow, his thin yet soft-looking lips, and his pointed nose. After minutes of gazing into each other's eyes, she got lost in the depths of his stare. She was overwhelmed with the inviting warmness of his eyes. She felt like melting in his sight. Without realizing it, he was slowly moving towards her. She didn't move away from him. Instead, she just closed her eyes, as if gesturing him to come closer. He did as he was signaled to do so, and planted his lips on hers. They just sat like that for a few seconds, and then she suddenly broke the kiss.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I haven't even known your name." he said as he rested his forehead on the palm of his hand.
"No. It's not your fault. I should have pulled away sooner. Oh and by the way, I'm Lilith."
"Nice to meet you, I guess."
"The feeling's mutual, Hunter. So umm. Where should I stay?"
"You can stay here. My parents won't be here for a whole month. You can stay here in my room. I'll sleep on the couch." He offered as he grabbed some of his pillows and his blanket.
"Really? Geez, thanks." She said as she went back to lying down on his bed.
"So much for being nice." He complained to himself as he walked out of the room and rolled his eyes.
The next day was a Monday, so they had to fix her enrolment at his school. They went to school at six o' clock in the morning and went straight to the principal's wasn't crowded yet, lucky for them.
"Good morning, Mrs. Adams." He greeted her sweetly.
"What do you want?" she asked him in grunts. It was pretty scary, but the freakishly large mole on her face kept them from being scared. They took her less seriously when they see her mole.
"Well, we have a new student applicant."
"No, Mr. Murdoch. You know perfectly well that we don't accept enrollees when the school is at its end." She said, banging the folders she was holding on the oak table."
"Now you will." Lilith blew some dust in front Mrs. Adams' face. "Hello, Mrs. Adams. You look absolutely gorgeous today. May I enter my classes now?" she asked sweetly.
"Yes, you may…." Her voice faded at the last part of her sentence. She didn't even know who the girl in front of her was.
"Lily McCormick." She replied as she took her timetable from her and left the classroom. They went outside and walked slowly to his locker.
"Brilliant! What did you do to her?" he asked, his eyes transformed into two saucers.
"Simple. I just blew some Dark dust on her and now I've got total control of her. Cool, huh? Once you become one of us, you will be privileged with this kind of ability." She boasted.
"I said I'll think about it." He said as he rolled his eyes at her.
Finally, they reached his locker. With a snap of her fingers, the locker beside his was transformed into hers, and the books and school supplies she needed were inside.
"Do you know what ice cream is?" he asked her. It was awkward, really. Asking someone if she knows what ice cream is.
"What's ice cream?" she said, tilting her head to the side.
"Come on. Let's go buy you ice cream." He said as he took her hand.
They walked together to the nearest ice cream parlor and walked over to the counter. The attendant asked them what they liked. Hunter was pretty sure what he wanted; Mint Choco Chip. The problem was: How can Lilith order when she doesn't even know what ice cream was?
"Hey. That brown thing looks good. Get me that." She demanded as she pressed her nose to the frosted glass.
The attendant did as he was told. After receiving their orders, he paid for both of them. They sat down on one of the couches in the shop and ate away at their ice cream. He was enjoying his ice cream when he noticed her. It was adorable yet really messy. Her face was buried in her Chocolate Fudge cone. When she looked up at him, her face was full of ice cream. He found her very vulnerable at that state, so he grabbed a napkin and wiped the ice cream off of her face.
"Oh? Geez. How I wish there was ice cream in Hell. It's like summer all year round down there! I'm melting and I can't even get a glimpse of comfort." She said as she rolled her eyes.
He just smiled at her and ate away at his ice cream. After all, it was his favorite.
Two weeks passed and still she hasn't convinced him to be an ally of the dark side. Sure, he was getting more diabolical than ever each day, but it still wasn't enough to transform him into an evil man. She was running out of time and that was a problem. But there was a bigger problem than that. She was falling for him more and more each day. She tried to conceal it, but it was starting to show.
It came to the point that she only had ten days left to convince him, but he was nowhere near in joining them. She has been trying to make more futile efforts, because she came into very important conclusions.
One, she was irrevocably in love with Hunter Murdoch. Two, she's grown more attached to humans that she didn't want them to die during his reign when the Armageddon takes place on Earth. Three, she was fully aware of her Master's true intentions; once he was recruited as the next ruler of Hell, he would secretly sneak up on him and drain his powers for his own benefit. And four, she wanted to be with him without facing the loathsome punishment for her betrayal, which was death.
She was deep in her thoughts, studying Calculus in Hunter's room, when a sudden burst of black aura appeared before her. After the aura cleared out, the figure was easy to decipher.
"Ares?" she asked, her eyes squinted at the figure carrying a scythe.
"Lilith." The figure replied. It appeared to be female; with the perfect curves, waist-length raven hair, flowing purple gown, and dazzling amethyst irises.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to check up on you, and see if you've made progress on your mission."
"Well? What have you inquired?" she teased, feeling nervous and insecure at the same time.
Ares the Reaper, goddess of war, was known for claiming the lives of a gazillion people. From zygotes to wrinkled old people. Once given a mission, she does it with utmost ease. Not showing even the slightest guilt or fear.
"I know you're nowhere near succeeding and that you're falling for your victim."
"Cool." She said sarcastically.
"I'm your best friend since Hades-knows-when. Of course I know you. Even your breathing patterns."
"What a psycho. Well, everything you said was true. I don't want to fail Master Charon, but I really love him. I don't know what came over me, but I really love him. Ares, you have to help me. Please. I beg of you. I can accept failure, but I don't want to die or live in eternal torment." She begged, tears in her eyes while kneeling in front of her friend.
"I know it seems hopeless, but I think I know what to do."
"Within the next two weeks, you must fall in love with him truly. Once you fall in love with him, you will turn human. Once you turn human, it's very possible that Charon won't kill you no more, and the Earth won't experience the Armageddon."
"Is that the only thing left?"
"Take it. Or leave it."
'I only have three more days left. I know I love him already, but why does it seem like it isn't enough?' she thought to herself as she accompanied him to buy tickets for prom.
"Hey, Earth to Lil. Are you okay?" she asked as he waved his hand in front of her.
"Oh? Yeah? I'm just sleepy." She said as an excuse. Luckily, he bought it.
"Oh. Okay. Lily? Do you have a date for prom?"
"Prom? Nope. I don't think I'm even going."
"No date? A pretty girl like you is not attending prom? No date? Un-be-lie-va-ble."
"Well, face it. I don't have a date. I'm not going to prom." She crossed her arms above her chest.
"Now you are. You're going to prom with the most handsome kid in school."
"Ooh! Who is he?" she mocked him.
"Me." He said, and then planted a soft and chaste kiss on her lips. Believe me, it made her day. She even forgot that she only had three days left.
You lift my feet off the ground,
You spin me around.
You make me crazier, crazier.
Feels like I'm fallin' and I,
Am lost in your eyes.
You make me crazier, crazier, crazier.
The two waltzed elegantly around the dance floor; fingers intertwined, his arm around her waist, bodies close to each other, and gazes locked. He spun her gently, avoiding her to experience dizziness.
"Lilith." He whispered in her ear as he held her close.
"Yes?" she replied with a dreamy expression on her face.
"I know it's a bit too sudden, but I want to tell you something. Ever since the day I saw you collapse in my front lawn, I have been captivated by your beauty." He said.
"I was about to tell you the same thing. I'm sorry if I didn't speak up earlier than this, but I couldn't find the right time to tell you how I feel. But we can't be. Angels and Devils can never be." She replied as she hugged his neck.
"Please, don't give up. You love me, and I love you. Nothing else could go wrong." These were his last words to her before all hell broke loose.
Suddenly, the whole dance froze. No one was moving but the two. A bright glow emanated from Lilith. Her wings and her fangs suddenly shot out from her, was incinerated and disappeared into ashes. Her back shone a very bright light. He spun her around and saw the pentagram on her back dissolve. After her transformation, the glow disappeared and she fainted. Luckily, he caught her in his arms. He rocked her in his arms, trying to wake her up. When she opened her eyes, he hugged her tightly, thankful that she was alive. Everything started to move again. Unfortunately, a voice rang out in the whole room.
"Lesser-Devil Lilith. You have failed your mission. Now I must kill your man." Charon said as he walked towards the couple. All the people in the auditorium ran away in fear.
"I won't let you harm him!" she shouted.
"Oh don't worry, little one. I will not cause him any harm. I will kill him as quickly as possible." He said as he inched closer towards them. Everything happened in a blur. A jet of red light shot out from Charon's palms.
A body fell on the ground. It was Lilith. She sacrificed her own life for the man she loved. Hunter was very angry at him for killing her, but it wasn't really Charon's intention. He wanted to kill him, but killed her instead.
"You're going to pay for this!" he shouted at him.
"What have you got against me?" he teased cockily.
"I have been fighting alongside with Heaven for so long already. I have been training. Hell doesn't stand a chance anymore." He said as he killed Charon with one blow of his powers. When he saw Charon fall to the ground, he immediately ran to Lilith's body and rocked her on his lap as a sea of tears escaped his eyes.
"I'm sorry I didn't believe you before. I shouldn't have forced you to continue loving me." He cried as he cradled her in his lap.
"It's okay. This would've happened to me sooner or later. I've already seen it coming. It's not your fault. I loved you with all my heart. It was my own choice to fall in love with you." She said in between ragged breaths.
"Please. Don't waste your remaining energy for this. Preserve it. Try to live. Please." He begged her, and then one of his tears fell on her cheek.
"Let me be selfish one last time. Give me a farewell kiss, Hunter. "
"But won't you just return to hell?" he asked as she put around his neck the ruby pendant.
"Stop talking." She said in between short breaths. She suddenly grabbed him by his necktie and kissed him passionately. "Goodbye." She whispers and gave him one last kiss. Without realizing it, her head suddenly fell onto his lap. And he knew, not only did she let go of him but her life as well.
Twenty years passed after that night, and she just turned into ashes. He kept everything in a ceramic urn and hid it in the darkest corner of his closet.
"Daddy! Daddy! Look at what I drew awhile ago in school!" a little girl with brown and curly hair was running towards him. He picked her up and looked at the drawing. It was an illustration wherein an angel and devil were holding each other's hand, the halo on the angel was lopsided, exposing one horn. "Don't you think it's cute?" she giggled.
"It is, darling. Let me exhibit it on the fridge." He said as he put her down. He walked to the fridge and placed an orange-shaped magnet on the illustration. "Who would've thought I'd see you again, Lilith? Thank you for the pendant. It has been protecting me from any potential harm. It's been twenty years but the memories of that month never ceased to leave my mind. What spell did you cast on me to make me fall in love with you like this?" he asked himself.
"Daddy? Who are you talking to?" the little girl asked him as she hugged his leg.
"No one, Lily. No one at all." He said.
"I want ice cream, daddy." She asked him as she continued to hug his legs.
"She always loved Chocolate Fudge." He muttered to himself.
"Isn't that considered as the Devil's treat?" his wife asked.
