Chapter 16 "Do you like him THAT way...?"
The entrance of Gekkoukan was rather deserted in the evening. The brick walkway surrounded a single statue which looked like a tall, slender man in a tuxedo. It looked as if it was made of pure gold.
Alice stepped out of the school alongside Shion. The birds were chirping about and a small gust of wind blew against their hair. There were only a few others who were there, but they didn't even give the foreign looking lady and the caped girl and mind.
Shion's phone started to ring and vibrate in her pocket barely ten seconds from when she stepped out. She pulled out her phone from her pocket and answered it.
"Yeah?" Shion turned away from Alice who stared blankly at her. "Mmm hmm... Okay I got it."
"Uh..." Alice tried to muster a word.
Shion hung up and put the phone into her pocket. "Arisu, you can go back to the dorm yourself, right?"
"Is something wrong?" Alice asked.
"No, I just didn't fill in some forms for the kendo club." Shion rubbed her head with embarrassment. "I'll see you later, okay?"
"Okay..." Alice nodded.
She walked down the three steps that led to the door as Shion walked back into the school. She actually felt uncomfortable walking alone during the evening. She had been walking back to the dorm with Shion this whole time, walking alone just felt different and awkward.
That, and she felt like she was being watched.
Girl's Dorm: Dining hall
Alice sat on the same table with Ristuko and Aoki. They invited her to sit with them as she wandered aimlessly in the dining hall. After all, she was in the same club as them.
There was only one problem.
Alice's quiet demeanour led to an awkward silence among the three. If they asked anything, Alice would answer with a nod or a headshake. If they talked among themselves, they would just come off as rude.
The three girls sat around the clothed square table. The only thing heard was the roar of chatting in the entire hall.
Alice ate like she never had a meal her entire life, the gravy of the lamb chops she ate splattering all over her cheeks. The two girls didn't notify her as they were very VERY used to seeing this kind of thing.
Out of the blue, a butler, a rather handsome one at that, tapped Alice's shoulder. She looked at him over her shoulder with a rib held between her teeth like a barbarian.
"Miss, this letter is addressed to you." The butler put a letter in her hand.
"Thank you..." Alice glanced at him, talking with the rib in her mouth.
"You're welcome." The butler bowed and then left.
Ritsuko and Aoki found this as a chance to break the ice. Ritsuko thought of asking something along the lines of, "What's in the letter?" Unfortunately for her, Aoki beat her to the punch.
"Is that a love letter?" Aoki asked with improbable quickness.
Alice opened the letter and showed it to her.
"Come alone to room 27." Aoki read it out loud. "Oh my God, the butler is looking for some alone time with you!"
"But butlers aren't allowed in the dorms." Ritsuko replied.
"You're such a killjoy." Aoki pouted. "Let a woman's imagination run wild."
Alice took the letter back and stared at it as she bit the rib in half.
Reiji went into his room and the first thing he saw was Kazuki on the floor, reading. He had a box of pizza lying beside him as he took bite after bite of it as he read his favourite novel.
Kazuki looked over his shoulders at Reiji and raised an eyebrow. "You look oddly satisfied today."
"The hell are you talking about?" Reiji replied as he climbed up the double-decker bed.
"You're always frowning all the time." Kazuki answered. "So much that I memorised that ugly mug of yours. If you change expressions in the slightest, I'd notice."
Reiji ignored him and lay on his bed flatly, tired of tutoring the three. "(That was tiring. Although, that was probably the largest group I've ever been in. I've never talked to more than two people at a time... It felt... Strange.)"
"So, did you do something notorious like I'd expect you to?" Kazuki said as he continued reading. "Did you trap a little girl in a bathroom and endlessly violate her?"
Reiji cringed at the thought. "That's just disgusting."
"But it's okay to draw it?" Kazuki smirked.
"I don't draw little girls." Reiji replied.
"Heh, like I care." Kazuki kept chomping on the pizza. "They're all little to me."
"Yeah, little girls have boobs..." Reiji muttered sarcastically.
"Holy crap, this is awesome!" A voice from the other room shouted, one that Reiji recognized but can never properly figure who it belongs to. "I just got this game from the internet, Takeru! It's awesome! C'mere and take a look, I'll turn up the volume!"
Without warning, the voice of a pre-pubescent girl started moaning and groaning, screaming for help and begging someone to stop. Reiji's and Kazuki's eyes widened in horror and disgust. Although, out of pure curiosity, no perversion here, they pressed their ears against the wall. The moans started to sound more pleasured the more it went.
Suddenly the wall Kazuki stood exploded, blowing him across the room. Reiji looked at the hole made in the wall only to see Benkei staring at him with malicious intent. Reiji looked at his own arms and legs only to find that his wrists and ankles were chained.
Even worse, he was in a maid dress.
"We're going to have a fun night." Benkei neared him slowly.
"No... No!" Reiji shook his head in fear. "NOOOOOOOO!"
Reiji stuttered awake and smacked his head against the ceiling. He shouted, "Ouch!"
He looked left and right. The room was lit, and the smell of pizza was in the air. He looked under the blanket and saw that he was indeed not wearing a maid dress.
"(My dreams are getting weirder and weirder...)" Reiji thought to himself.
Girl's Dorm: Room 27
Alice stared at the gold plated sign of the door that read 27. She hesitated for a moment, but ultimately, she slowly pushed the door open, expecting the worst.
Hilariously enough, the sight that followed was nothing like what she'd thought. The room was neat and tidy, the books on the bookshelf arranged by genre then alphabet. The floor was carpeted blue and there was only a single bed which wasn't double-decker like the rest. She glanced at the computer table to see a green-haired girl who was looking at her. Unmistakeably, it was Yukino.
"Uhm..." Alice pointed at herself and then Yukino repeatedly, trying to align words.
"Yes, I called you here, take a seat." Yukino gestured a couch that was against a wall.
Alice sat down on the couch and stared at Yukino, pondering why she called her there.
"I just wanted to ask you a few questions." Yukino spun her chair to face Alice. "About Reiji."
"Why ask me...?" Alice pouted.
"W-Well, you're one of the only ones I've seen talking to him." Yukino scratched her head. "I asked Shion, didn't get much out of her. I'd go to Benkei, but I can't hold a conversation with him for five seconds before he spaces out. So I thought I'd go to you."
"Why...?" Alice asked, tilting her head.
"You're the only person I could get information from." Yukino explained.
"No, I mean..." Alice bit her lip. "Why do you want information on Reiji...? Do you like him THAT way...?"
Yukino blushed hard and shook her head vigorously. "No, NO! What gives you that idea?" She sighed and took a deep breath. "You see, every year, the student council president is always given the task of making Reiji sociable. The school just doesn't like the idea of the highest scoring student being an antisocial recluse."
"So..." Alice wagged her finger as she tried to make a connection.
"This year, it's my duty because I've been elected." Yukino scowled.
"I don't think kicking someone in the face makes them sociable..." Alice mumbled.
"T-That's a different story!" Yukino flailed her hands at Alice with a blush. "I just want to do my duty... The past few ones either didn't care or just failed miserably. They invited Reiji to parties, but he never showed, they tried o make conversation, but he ignores them and so on..."
Alice stared into Yukino's eyes. Though she wasn't good with people, her gut instinct told her that Yukino was being honest. "Okay..."
"I'll take that as an agreement for your help, thank you Sekigahara-san." Yukino smiled at her. "First off... Uh... Why does he always look so moody?"
"I think it's because he's lonely." Alice puffed up her cheeks.
"Okay..." Yukino bit her lip. "Does he use any sort of memory techniques?"
"What?" Alice raised an eyebrow.
"I guess you don't know." Yukino sighed. "Does he practice anything at all?"
"He draws pornography." Alice answered with a straight face.
"I'll... Just pretend I didn't hear that." Yukino rolled her eyes. "Does he-"
"Uhm..." Alice raised her hand to interrupt her. "I don't think asking me would actually help. I really don't know much about him... Other than the fact that he's really lonely. I think you'll do better if you asked him yourself."
"N-No..." Yukino shook her head. "He doesn't enjoy my company, I should know."
"Maybe if you don't shout at him he'd enjoy it..." Alice replied. "Why do you shout at him anyway...?"
"B-Because!" Yukino started to shake. "It's just... Natural instinct. I can't fight it. When I see him... I remember all the times I challenged him and lost, despite the impossibility of it happening! When all those memories flood into my mind... I lose control and scream."
"Oh." Alice really didn't know what to say to that.
"That's why I can't have a proper conversation with him." Yukino spun her chair the other way around. "Even last afternoon, it's because you were there."
"Someone I knew thought me this when I was younger..." Alice spoke up. "If you have a bad habit, pinch yourself every time you do it. Eventually, it'll go away..."
Yukino's eyes widened. She looked over her shoulder at Alice. "T-That's..."
The Next Day, Class 3-1
Reiji had a nice nap on his desk by the window. The teacher hadn't entered the classroom and all the students were already seated. He felt his elbow poke something on his right. It was warm. It felt strange to him so he glanced to his right.
And to his surprise, Yukino sat beside him on the seat that was unoccupied since he entered the class the first time.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Reiji asked with a shocked expression.
"I couldn't see the blackboard from where I seat." Yukino answered.
"This is the back row." Reiji rebutted.
"The angle's better than my old one. Plus, it's unoccupied, so I have the right to sit here." Yukino replied.
Reiji grumbled. "Whatever, just don't make any noise and don't wake me up." He rested his head flat on the desk.
"Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!" Yukino pinched herself repeatedly.
Wild Massaya Guessing
Masaya: Yukino becomes a main character! She'll create a love triangle with Alice and Reiji! I called it! And she'll win!
Aoki: But if she wins, then wouldn't the story have to change its title to Brooding Guy, Tsundere Girl?
Masaya: So what? When it comes to love triangles, the winner will always be the one with bigger boobs! Boobs are the deciding factor of- Ouch! Stop it Mihiro! Ow!
