The Voyage of an Angel

Chapter 1

Sophie

Another nervous look, then the flash look back out the window.

I am freaking her out. I smile slightly and lean against the frigid window. I sigh and wrap my purple jacket around me tighter, the one day I wear a light jacket its zero degrees outside. I steal another glance at her and then look out the window. I close my eyes for a brief moment and I feel the seat sink next to me.

I jump and open my eyes, the girl is sitting next to me clutching her backpack and looking at me.

Her Crystal Blue eyes shine with every passing car, "You staring at me is really creepy."

I sigh, "I guess I'm a creepy person".

She smiles a little, "You got a name, Creepy?"

I nod, "Yeah, Sophie".

She looks at me, "Got a last name?"

"Yeah".

She rolls her hand, "What is it?"

I smile, "Now you're the creepy one."

She gives me a playful shove, "Shut up!"

I laugh, "My last name is Champlin".

"Sophie Champlin?" She rolls the name around in her head. "I like it, my names Amber Cardoza."

I smile, I knew that, don't ask, "Cool, what grade you in? I'm new and I wanted to see if you were in any of my classes."

"Oh, I'm in 8th grade."

I smile, "Same here!"

She gives me a small smile, "You got your schedule? Or do you get it when we get to school?"

I think it over and reach in my bag. I pull out a slip of paper and hand it to her.

"Are you sure you haven't looked at my schedule? This is exactly like mine!"

I shake my head, "No, I don't even know you that well? All I know is your name, and apparently your schedule!"

She laughs, "Well….Where do you live? I didn't see you get on."

I gulp for a brief second, crap. I don't have a home now….Improvise!

"I don't live anywhere." Smart one.

I sigh to myself as she gasps, "What do you mean"!

"She flagged down the bus to let her on," the bus driver intrudes into our conversation.

I blush as Amber asks, "What! Really? That's terrible!"

I sigh and look at the ground, I had a home, but I got kicked out! Well, for the most part.

"So how'd ya scrape up money to come here?"

I shrug, "I have money, but no house to live in. Last night I slept in the hammock at Wal-Mart, in the lawn and garden section."

She gasps and covers her mouth as another person gets on and sits behind us, "That's terrible! They didn't kick you out?"

I shake my head, "Nope, I asked the manager if I could…he said no, so I slipped him some money and BOOM a bed for the night!"

She takes a deep breath as the girl that just got on leans over the seat and gives me a curious look. Her deep green eye shimmer with curiosity, her brown hair is half pulled up. She gives me a friendly smile, "Hiya! I'm Abby! Who are you?"

I smile, "Hi Abby, I'm Sophie".

Amber gives her a worried look as she nervously twirls a piece of long blonde hair. Her eyes seem to fade off into the distance, "Ab," Amber starts, but she stops herself.

Abby looks down at her, "Are you okay, Am?"

She shakes her thoughts away, "Yeah." She turns to me, her eyes fill with wonder, "You can live with me!"

"What?" Abby and I say in unison.

"You need a place to live! You can live with me and my mum, we have an extra bedroom, since my sister moved out, I mean. For God's sake, please take my offer, I can text my mum now and ask her!"

I smile and rub my aching back, For God's sake? Ha, she has no idea what she just said.

"Yeah! Okay, that'll be fun!"

Abby shakes her hands, "Wait, how do you know if she's a serial killer or something!"

Amber looks at me and gives me a stupid look, "I don't…"

I laugh, "Trust me, I'm not".

"Yeah, I'm new. This is my schedule I got." I say with a bored look.

"Okay, I don't remember sending this out to you." The secretary looks up at me.

I roll my eyes and snap my fingers silently, "This was sent out on December 20th. I am leaving now."

I turn and leave the office. I pull my backpack onto my shoulder and walk a little faster down the hallway. I stop and look around the intersection that goes four different directions. I stomp my foot and look around. Dang, everyone's in class.

I stand there for a few minutes hoping to see someone, no one. I look at the doors to see if I can distinguish some sort of directions. My gaze settles on a door, "Or I can go to the nurses office," I mutter starting toward the door.

"Knock Knock?" I say as I walk into the room.

An older women, late fifty's with white hair pulled into a bun, smiles up to me, "You are new, correct?"

I nod, "Yup. Can I have some directions on how to get to my classes?"

She smiles, "Sure, let me see your schedule."

I hand her my schedule as she pulls out a map of the school and a marker. She circles all my classes and when I have them. As she does this she says every step.

"Thanks!" I say after she finishes, I try to stretch my aching back, but I can't.

"Problem?" she asks.

I shake my head quickly, "No, no! I'm fine, just a few back pains!"

The nurse stands up, "I can check you for scoliosis, it is a must have in this school."

I gulp, "O-oh I already had it done!"

The nurse gives me a sad look, "What are you not telling me?"

I rub the back of my head, my face feeling suddenly hot, "Nothing, Ma'am. I just am nervous and all about my first day."

The nurse sighs and sits back down, "Do you have any thing I need to know about?"

"What!"

She blinks, "Like asthma or diabetes… What did you think I was talkin about?"

I breathe out a long breath, "Nothing. I need to go to class now."

I turn and practicly sprint out the hallway toward my first period class, School hasn't even started for me yet, and I already want to go home. *Sigh* not good.

I make it to my history class, I walk in and there in the middle of a lesson. There's a line of people waiting to pick from a bin, only to read it out loud and then be happy or sad about it.

"Okay, three units of food per farmer! Ha-ha! You had a flood come through!"

"What?" I say, a little too loud. I cover my mouth, as my face gets red. Everyone turns their eyes to me.

"What do you want?" The teacher says as he leans back on his chair to look at me.

I hold up the schedule, "Today's my first day. You're my first period."

The teachers sighs, "Okay. Do you know anybody in this class so you can join their colony?"

I look around and spot Amber and Abby, sitting with a boy that looked to be asleep. I look at the teacher, "Yeah I do."

"Okay, first-" He stands up and tells all the kids standing up there to go back to their seats.

"Everyone, apparently we have a new student-" He turns to me, "Introduce yourself."

I sigh and look around at all the tired faces, "Umm. I'm Sophie …and I'm, uh, new to here."

They all start laughing and the teacher even smiles, "Okay, who do you know?"

I point at Amber and Abby, "Amber and Abby, they were on my bus this morning."

"Okay, you can join their colony. They are the-"

"Sparkling Idiots!" Abby chirps.

I laugh and walk over to them. I sit down in a seat next to Amber, "Hi," I mutter.

"Hi!" I look at the boy who woke up.

"What is this?" I ask.

"This is the Colony game we've been playin for a while. As we play we'll explain it to you, we have twenty-five squares and there the pink and black flag!" The boy spills out fast.

I blink, "Cool".

Amber points at the boy, "That's Dan Temper, there's also a girl named Trisha Evans, but she had to go to a funeral today for a family friend of hers".

Everyone in our group grows silent as I stand up and turn to the teacher, "Can I go to the bathroom?"

"Yeah. It's down the hallway to the right."

"Thanks," I mutter as I walk out the door. The moment I'm out of view of the door, I bolt. No, not toward the bathroom, toward the exit. I hit the door at full speed, my arms pain from the force. I run into the frigid air and rip off my jacket, the soreness on my back suddenly recedes.

I keep running full speed toward the tree line. I'm on pure adrenaline, the cold air fills me with energy and I feel free. I am free now, I am for the rest of eternal life.

I throw my hands in the air as I feel the overwhelming feeling that I can fly now. Because I can, I take off; the bell around my belt buckle jingles slightly, I smile at the feeling of my strong wings flapping. I fly higher and higher until I can touch the clouds.

I reach in my pocket for a piece of paper. I pull it out and look it over. I smile a little.

I crumple it up in my hand and throw it into the wind. It's gone in a second. I stop in midair, my black wings drift around me as I float there for a few moments. "I need to go to Wal-Mart, then Main street."

Instead of going on, I do nose dive right toward the ground, I pull my wings in close to my back as I reach speeds close to hundred feet per second. Then…STOP! I whip out my wings and stop. I laugh, "I love doing that!" I shout to the rushing wind.

I see a patch of trees, I try to land in the branches, but I fall to the ground.

I pull in my wings and put my jacket back on, "Ow, not the smartest thing I've ever done."

I stand up and walk toward the closest street, wow, Main Street. I'm next to the Wal-Mart I spent the night in, so I run in and buy a black jacket with a hood and run back out.

I pull off the price tag as I slowly walk down the street. I slip on my new hoodie and zip it up. I throw the hood over my black, blue, and purple hair (streaks of colors).

I hear a sad piano song, as I walk up to a small building. I stop and look up to the top, I frown at the sign and I slowly walk in.

I look at the sign next to the door.

Today:

Funeral for

I know what the rest of the sign says, I don't need to read it.

I stop in front of the door and I bit my lip. My stomach churns but I slowly push the door open enough so I can sneak in. I cover my face so no one can see me.

I sneak to the corner and stand there, almost blending into the shadows. One of the people helping out walked over to me, I look at the ground as he asks, "Do you need a seat."

I shake my head, but say nothing.

He nods and walks away. I sigh and look up at the crowd that's standing around facing the front of the building.

I bite my lip harder and harder as the song cuts to an end and everyone sits down, I'd say there's about a hundred people, give or take a few. Someone walks to the front and my attention is on alert when I see the picture sitting onto of the casket.

"I-I, I love that little girl. She was my best friend." The person said, but someone pulls on the corner of my jacket, so I do not catch the end.

I look down and the breath catches in my throat.

"So-So? Is that you?" The little voice says.

I blink back tears and kneel down to her eye level, "Hi Jaimers! Yeah it's me."

She smiles so big, I think she'll explode. She tries to run back to her mom but I stop her, "Wait," I whisper, "can't tell anyone."

"Why!" She says.

"Because, I'm not supposed to be here, Jaimers! So, please," I put my finger to my lip, "shush"

"But-But-" her big blue eyes swell with tears, "fine, but I still love you, So-So!"

I give her a hug, "I love you too, Jaimers."

Jaime leans toward me, "Are you an angel?"

I nod, "Yes, yes I am."

She smiles and gives a big hug, "Tell Mooko I said I love him." With that, she turns and runs back to her grieving family.

(Mooko was her families dog that passes away last year, and I already told him hi).

I stand up and cross my arms. I frown and get an idea. I'll see the funeral from a different angle. I walk up the stairs to the choir loft. I reached the top step and I realize that, choir singers sing in the choir loft.

I stop and look at all the people paying no attention to me as they watch another person talk, they won't see me, I chose who can see me, so I could do jumping jacks in front of everyone of them and they won't see me, cool huh? I walk to the railing and continue to watch the funeral. I look down at Jaime, she looks over where I just was. Then she looks up at me and a small smile crosses her face, I see her mouth move and then my aunt looks up at me too.

I sigh, my aunt won't see me either. She'll just think Jaimers is going crazy from grief. My aunt shakes her head and turns back to the front. Jaime gives her a weird look and mumbles something. I walk back down the stairs once I decide I have seen enough.

I stop behind my aunt and my cousin. I give Jaime a kiss on the forehead and I touch my aunt on the shoulder. She jumps and looks around. Her eyes settle right where I am, but all she will feel and see is cold air. I smile to Jaime and start to walk toward the doors, I stop right in front of the door and turn around.

Jaime is standing in front of me. I smile and pick her up. I spin her around, "I thought I told you not to tell?" I whisper in her ear.

"Sorry, mommy was sad."

I smile, "Well, I guess that is a good reason."

Jaime pulls my hoodie off and my hair falls around my shoulders. I sigh and set Jaime down on the ground, "If you excuse me, I have to go back to school. Someone's waiting for me."

Jaime looks up at me, "You have to go to school in heaven?"

"Yeah, Angel school. So you can learn to fly!"

Jaime's eyes get big and she gives me a huge hug, "Can you visit me? Am I the only person that can see you?"

"Yeah, well, everyone that I want to see can see me. But right now, you are the only looking at me now."

"Why don't you show everyone?"

I place a hand on her little shoulder, "I can't baby girl," I kiss her on the forehead again, "I'll be your guardian angel. If you ever wanna talk, I'll be there."

I stand up and grab Jaime's hand and I walk her back to her seat. I wave to her, "Remember, I'm just a bell ring away."

I pull off the bell that dangles off my belt and I hand it to her. I close her little hands around it, "It's an angel bell, be careful with it!"

"I will!" She promises looking at the bell.

I smile and slowly walk toward the closest exit and out into the cold wind. I stop and take off one hoodie, and then my other. I start running as I drop both my jackets as I throw open my wings and took off into the cold sky.

I stopped and floated in mid-air for a second as I think of everyone that attended the funeral….for me. I attended my own funeral, wow that's a first.

I hope you enjoyed! It took me a few days, and apparently all my friends like this! This will be a spur of the moment book... Warning you now it might randomly appear as a new chapter!
