Prologue

I looked up, right into my brother's face, and knew instantly that I shouldn't have. I sighed heavily, knowing that he wouldn't stop bugging me until I told him. He leaned closer, and I figured that I had no choice. Devon could always tell if I was hiding something.

I looked at the menu and said, "I keep having these dreams about a girl. She would be smiling and laughing, but then something happens. Everything would turn black, and she screams." I looked back up at him, "Then I wake up, but I can still see her face, and even when I don't, I can still hear her laugh."

Devon sat thinking for a minute, then he looked at me thoughtfully, "Jake," he asked me, "Have you seen this girl before?" I didn't answer though, because instead of listening to him, I was looking at the girl who just walked in. She wasn't much, just regular brown hair with purple streaks and tan skin, but I knew differently.

I focused on what Devon had asked, and then nodded, saying, "She's right behind you in the blue jacket." He turned, and looked for her. When he did find her, he whistled and looked back at me, grinning.

I rolled my eyes and punched him in the gut. He laughed, and soon we were both laughing. "Come on," I said, grinning, "We need to get back to work."
