This is one of my personal favorites. There are a couple underlying meanings to the poem. I won't explain them; I'll let you figure them out.

Mourning Dove

Mourning dove…

Your sad and lonely song

Drifts through the breaking dawn.

It calls to me from far away.

Hold on for but awhile longer

My mourning dove.

I will be there to comfort you.

Mourning dove…

Your sad and lonely song

Accompanies the rising sun.

I hear it still, it's closer now.

Hold on for but awhile longer

My mourning dove.

I will be there to comfort you.

Mourning dove…

Your sad and lonely song

Lays silent now that day has come.

I hear it still, it echoes in my soul.

Hold on for but awhile longer

My mourning dove,

I will be there to comfort you.

Mourning dove…

Your sad and lonely song

Plays again in the evening hours.

I hear it still, loud and clear.

You need not wait any longer

My mourning dove.

I am here to comfort you.

Mourning dove…

Your sad and lonely song

Fades as day passes to night.

I hear it still as it flows through my dreams.

And when morning breaks again,

My mourning dove,

I will be there to comfort you.
