It was late- past 10 at least. But neither Zach nor Jenny cared. With everything going on in their lives, they just wanted to have some stress-free time together.
"The moon is so pretty," Jenny spoke glancing over at her teacher.
He smiled at her. "It sure is,"
Jenny yawned. "Are you sure you don't want to go to bed?" he asked her.
"I'm sure. I like being up here with you."
"Me to. It's nice to get away from everything."
They sat there for a while longer, taking about everything and nothing.
"So who was your first kiss?" Jenny asked.
He laughed. "Really? You want me to answer that?"
"Yup!" she replied, her bubbly self.
"Alright," he responded. "It was with this boy named Jacob in the second grade. We were under the play structure, and we were talking about his older sister dating this guy at her high school. At the time, girls still had cooties, so we couldn't see why boys would want to kiss people who had cooties when we could kiss guys who didn't have cooties. Long story short, we ended up kissing,"
This had Jenny chuckling. "That's pretty funny, Lopez. Even back in the second grade you were kissing boys,"
That's when it started to rain.
"We should get going," Zach said.
"Five more minutes! Please?" she begged.
"Because I love you,"
"Yay!"
"So what about your first kiss?" he asked.
The smile dropped from her face and she looked down past the branches to the floor.
"Jenny?" Her sudden change in emotion was evident to him, and he wanted to know what was up.
"I've actually never been kissed. In my 17 years of life, no one has ever kissed me."
"Oh." He suddenly felt bad for asking the question.
"Well let's go, I guess." Before waiting for his response, she climbed down from the tree and landed on the floor. Zach was right behind her.
"Wait," he said. She turned around and faced him. "Come here." She obeyed him and walked the few feet to where he was standing. She wiped the rain from her eyes and looked up at him.
Then it happened. He kissed her. Zach Lopez, who has only kissed one girl in his 27 years of life, was kissing 17 year old Jenny Edwards in the rain.
She pulled back and smiled. She knew it was wrong. No matter how close they were, he was still her teacher. But at that moment, neither of them cared. She had her first kiss- in the rain no less, and he had given his girl the greatest gift a teenage girl could want.
