Chapter10-Web Of Lies
Travis walked out of his room, fixing the collar on his shirt. His eyes hovered over the room before landing on me. "I was told to watch you."
I rolled my eyes and looked back at the TV.
"Yeah, yeah. Your job will be super easy today. So go away." Darren said from the spot beside me.
"I wanted to talk to you, Summer. Alone." He glared at Darren.
I got up quickly and moved out of Darren's range. "It's not a problem."
He led me back to his room. It was small, smaller than Alex's. His bed was pressed against a wall and he had a dresser across the room. It was super neat and it didn't really even look like he had much.
"So... um... why am I here?" I asked in a soft voice.
"Get comfortable first. That baby looks like a handful already."
I bit my lip but did as he said. I sat down on his bed, glad to get off my feet.
He walked over and sat down beside me. "He doesn't really love you."
"Huh?" I asked, looking over at him. He was taller than Alex and had much more facial hair. His short hair barely covered half of his forehead, giving a military type look. I felt... off around him. Mainly because I hadn't really met him until now.
"Alex." Travis said, leaning closer to me. His lips were close now, his breath hitting my face. I could smell alcohol.
I swallowed hard and moved away from him. "No. He loves me. I know it."
Travis shook his head and leaned toward me some more. "Don't fight me, Summer. I'm smarter than him. You could learn a thing or two."
I got to my feet quickly. The fear for my baby grew strong then. Would he hurt me? "I love him. And you can say whatever you want about him. I don't believe you."
He got up, too, and grabbed my wrist. "You're not leaving."
I fought against him, hitting him hard against his chest.
He grabbed both my hands in one of his and with the other one, smacked me in the face.
I collapsed to the floor, tears in my eyes.
"Maybe you'll listen to me better if you can't see anything." He said, pulling me onto my back. He grabbed a knife from the small bedside table and slashed it across my eye.
I screamed and fought against him harder. I hit him in the face, my fist slamming into his nose.
"Dammit!" He yelled, holding his face. I had broken his nose. Broken it badly.
The door slammed open then, hitting against the wall sharply. Just as Travis was about to hit me, hit me in the stomach, Darren threw him far away from me. Travis bolted from the room, the house.
I was alone with Darren. Scared to death.
Darren picked me up in his arms. "It's okay, Summer. He's gone." He carried me to the living room and laid me down on the couch. He headed to the bathroom, moving quickly.
I held my hand over my eye. My tears mixed with the blood and the cut was unbearable. It ached and stung horribly.
Darren was back quickly. He pulled my hand back gently and cleaned the blood off. "This'll hurt but you're a fighter." He used a cotton ball to rub alcohol over the cut.
I cried harder. Wasn't there a different way to clean the cut?
"Here. Sit up against the pillows." He said softer now. He helped me sit up. He was covering my eye with a large bandage when Alex came into the house.
"What the hell did you do?" He yelled, running to my side.
I found his hand easily. I squeezed his hand tightly. "He didn't do it."
Alex moved me a little as he sat down under me, lifting me onto his lap. "Then who did?"
I stayed silent, hiding my face in his chest.
Darren spoke up. "It was Travis. I don't know what happened."
Alex stroked my hair. "I can't trust anyone around here."
Darren didn't say anything. He got up and took the kit back to the bathroom.
I moved even closer to Alex. "Can you take me to bed?"
He kissed the top of my head. "Of course." He got up gently, carrying me slowly to his room.
