Jake's POV
Ben follows behind me as I open the door to Bell's hospital room. The cold air turns straight to ice in my lungs when I see her. Her small form dressed in that blue gown patients have to wear. Her normally pale skin is now as white as the sheets she's lying in. White gauze covers her pale arms from the heel of her hand to the crook of her elbow. A small bit of gauze is taped to her cheek and without the distraction of all of her blood I can see the extent of all her injuries.
Deeply colored bruises mar her porcelain skin. Hers arms almost look like they're dyed blotchy purple and sickly green. Ben seems to have frozen behind me as well.
"Oh my god…" Ben starts backing away, his face looks kind of green. I think he's going to be sick. He backs up some more. He's almost to the bathroom before he turns and runs. He makes horrible sounds when he pukes. I'm very glad I'm not the type to get sick from hearing people get sick.
I distract myself from the weird stuff going on in the bathroom by looking at Bell. She's just lying there. I want her to wake up but at the same time I know if she was awake she'd be in pain. I don't want her to be hurting. Her eyelids flutter, she seems to be waking up.
"Bell, Bell…" I call to her as her eyes start to open completely. They're slightly swollen, but at least I can tell she's awake.
"Jake, what are you doing here?" Her voice is softer than normal, but steady. She's okay.
"Ben and I brought you here. You're in a hospital, we found you at your house. Bell, wh-why did you do that?"
"Do what Jake?" Does she not even remember?
"Why did you try to kill yourself! What's made you so freaking depressed that you'd do something like that! What aren't you telling us?" I can feel the burn of tears behind my eyes. I need to know. I really need to freaking know! I'm so frustrated. Why is she just sitting there staring at me? Those big green eyes filled with pain, even when her face is blank.
"I just couldn't take it anymore. It hurt too much. She said..." Her voice cuts off in a choked sob and she buries her face in her hands.
"Jake what did you do to make her cry this time?" I glance back at Ben standing in the doorway. I just glare at him halfheartedly and turn my attention back to Bell. She's still crying the gauze on her wrists getting damp with tears. Ben moves around to the other side of Bell's bed. He rubs her back while she cries, until she eventually stops. Her loud sobs and gasping breaths deteriorating into dry tear trails and deep shuddering breaths.
"Are you ready to tell us now? You don't have to if you don't want to, but it may help to tell us." She whips her head around when I finish my statement; a scandalized look marring her face. A tense silence falls over the three of us. It's broken when Matt walks in.
Bell watches the man as he comes up beside me. I move so he can talk to her properly and go to stand next to Ben.
"So Ms. Oliver, what all do you remember about what brought you here?" It seems he's avoiding telling her that he's her dad and going straight to the question we all want answered.
"Um, Jake said that he and Ben brought me here." She's avoiding a direct answer. What's so bad she can't even tell us?
"Yes, that is how you got here, but do you remember what caused your injuries? You seemed pretty bad when you arrived; besides the obvious slit wrists you have a deep cut on your cheek, severe bruises on your arms and legs, as well as a few bruised ribs. There also seem to be quite a few scars besides the ones that are obviously self-inflicted." Bell looks nervous and doesn't meet any of our gazes. Her eyes are stuck to a spot on the bed, her fingers picking at the edge of her sheet that's starting to fray.
"I, I, I can't."
"You can't what?"
"I can't tell you."
"You need to tell me. I'm sure your friends here would like to know as well. What's hurting you Bell?" Identical pairs of mint green eyes are locked to each other.
"What the hell is my daughter doing in this hell-hole?" I recognize Bell's mom's voice. She sounds really angry. Bell seems to shrink into the blankets at the sound of her voice. I would ask her about it but we all listen in tense silence as Dr. Jenson's voice answers hers.
"She attempted suicide accompanied with a few other injuries. I'm afraid your daughter will have to stay here for a couple days. I would also like to say that this hospital is not a 'hell-hole' as you have dubbed it. It is a well maintained rehabilitation and medical clinic."
"Well, can I at least see my daughter?"
"Of course ma'am." Footsteps approach our silent room. Dr. Jenson opens the door; a stoic expression is set on his face. He can probably sense the tension in the air around us.
Bell's mom walks straight in, plowing through the fog of nervous tension. Her usually perfect steps in her high heels are a bit off center and her dark brown hair, usually fixed into a neat bun is messy.
"Can I speak to my daughter alone." It wasn't a question; it was a command. Her angry gaze seems to pass over Matt like he's not even there. I have a bad feeling about leaving Bell alone, but it's her mom. Her mom won't hurt her.
Matt leads Ben and me out to the hallway. The short blonde goes to stand next to Dr. Jenson. I can't call him Keith; it's a bit too familiar since I've barely spoken to him. Matt is okay as Matt since he's Bell's dad.
"What were you thinking you stupid screw-up? You can't even die right! Now I'm stuck standing here in this faggot-breeding-ground waiting on your weak ass to get released so I can finish what that fag started!" We all freeze when the yells reach our ears. Similar looks of shock mask all our faces. Although Matt looks completely horrified. The yelling continues…
"Why won't you fucking die already? No one wants you alive! You're a waste of space and a fucking whore! Yeah, I know that you sleep with that little boyfriend of yours! And your cousin? I guess you and the fag are both fucked up in the head!" Her cold commanding voice that's always intimidated me. It's utterly terrifying right now. I'm pissed though. I want to beat that woman for yelling at Bell. Ben and Dr. Jenson seem to be thinking the same thing, Matt just looks terrified. The three of us who are just purely pissed start moving toward the room.
A loud sound of adhesive being ripped off and skin hitting skin reverberates through the hall, followed by a muffled yet still bloodcurdling scream. Oh my god… We need to get Bell. Now. Dr. Jenson is the first to burst into the room where more screams are coming from followed closely by Ben and me. The scene portrayed there makes our blood run cold.
A demonic woman stands above her daughter. The girl is bleeding from old reopened wounds and fresh new ones. Bruises and blood loss making her skin sickly, violently, pale. The demon has dark brown hair hanging haphazardly across her pale face. A sickly content smile lights up her usually serious mask, a crazed glint shines in the dark brown depth of her eyes. A glint that proves the fact that she is happy to murder her own daughter. Not just happy, no. She's fucking ecstatic.
Dr. Jenson and I lunge towards the demon. She's surprisingly strong but we're stronger. We work together and get her off of the bed; Ben moves to get in between Bell and the older woman.
Matt runs in with a sharp needle in hand. He locks his green eyed gaze with the dark brown of his ex-wife's, she glares daggers at him.
"Get out of my face, you fucking fag. All this trouble is your fault Matthew; if you had stayed straight everyone would have been happier."
"I was never that happy with you Keera; I was blinded by your beauty and overlooked all your faults. I should have listened to my conscience before it got that far." With a sigh he jabs the sharp needle into her upper arm. She struggles more, then falls limp in our arms.
"Who knew Keera would hate me that much. Hate me enough to try and kill our daughter." Dr. Jenson leaves Bell's mom-No Keera, she's not worthy to be anyone's mom- in my arms and moves to comfort Matt. He's starting to cry, but trying to stay strong, for Bell. She's being held by Ben, and both her hospital gown and Ben's t-shirt are stained with a mix of tears and blood.
I've seen enough blood in the past day to last a life time.
