Summary: "I'll do anything to make you happy, even if that means I have to see you in that wedding dress, marrying some else, killing me in the process."
In that wedding dress
Carl Bailey looked at himself in the mirror and sighed heavily; he was wearing a simple black tuxedo with a white shirt and a black tie; he was dressed for a wedding…sadly, it wasn't his wedding. He got out from his house and took a cab, feeling uneasy, wondering if going to that forsaken wedding was a good idea after all.
In fact, it was his entire fault; he was the one who let her go in the first place. Ten years, no, thirteen years ago, he took for granted the company and obvious love that that young girl tried to gave him; eleven years ago, Carl left his hometown, leaving her in the process and ten years ago he completely and utterly destroyed her heart. Now, at age twenty-eight, Carl was paying for all the mistakes he made in his teenage years.
You would think that after ten years Carl would have forgotten about his first love, and the truth is he actually had; but, exactly a year ago, he was reunited with her. Carl couldn't believe how beautiful she looked now, at age fifteen she was a skinny and awkward girl, and now she was a gorgeous, successful and independent woman, the kind of person any man would love to have, and Carl Bailey was no exception.
Darcy Smiths was her name and she was everything Carl had dreamed of and even more. Although Darcy was still pretty small, her body had built wonderfully, and her sole personality was incredible. Darcy was generous and kind, she wasn't conceited or mean; she was unique and understanding, smart and pretty, funny and confident, creative and caring; even if she did made mistakes ─no one is perfect─ her virtues compensated all her vices. With all these characteristics it wasn't surprising that Carl fell in love with her once again, this time, though, he truthfully loved her.
It would have been a perfect love story about love being stronger than time, but real life isn't like a fairytale, because, even if it would have been ideal, Darcy didn't wait for Carl, she moved on. When Carl arrived once again to her life, Darcy was already dating somebody; the man in question was a famous photographer named Ryan Adams, who loved Darcy more than anything in the world, and vice versa. Ryan was no prince charming, but that was the perfect thing about him; he didn't rescue her from evil, but helped her overcome her problems, he was there for her when she needed it the most, making her laugh and was a comforting arm every time Darcy needed it. It was unsurprising that Darcy fell truthfully for a man like that.
Carl's arrival to her life didn't change her feelings for Ryan, they actually reaffirmed them. Carl had to live with the fact that Darcy was no longer in love with him and, probably, she would never be, not anymore. Still, Carl harbored the hope that one day Darcy was going to be his once again, sadly, his dream never came true, because soon enough Ryan asked Darcy to marry him, and she gladly accepted it.
Life was making Carl learn the hard way; now he understood that never confessing his love for Darcy thirteen years ago was a huge mistake on his part; the worst part was that he broke her young and innocent heart many times, and now, she was breaking his and he totally deserved it.
It was too late to fight for the love of his life, Carl had already asked Darcy if she was sure about getting married, to which she sincerely answered that she had never been surer about anything in her life. That was it. Darcy loved Ryan and Ryan loved Darcy, as simple as that, there was no longer room for him.
And now, he was at the church, watching as Darcy walked down the aisle along with her father. She looks beautiful. He thought and it was the truth; Darcy looked like a princess, with her white puffy wedding gown, which had little silver jewels attached to the corset; her long and curly hair was styled in an elegant up-do and a shiny silver tiara was adorning her head. Darcy walked towards her soon-to-be husband while holding a bouquet of red roses and her eyes were shining in anticipation.
Ryan grinned like an idiot when he saw his bride, and Carl couldn't help but think that if he was in Ryan's place, he too would be grinning like that. Ryan held her hand lovingly and Darcy looked at him in a way that resembled the look she used to give to Carl when they were younger.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here together to celebrate the wedding of Ryan Adams and Darcy Smiths…"
As he watched the whole exchange, Carl felt how his heart broke painfully and slowly. He tried to hold back his tears as he watched the way Darcy gazed adoringly at her groom. She loves him. Carl thought as realization hit him with such intensity he could barely stay standing.
"I, Ryan Mathew Adams, take you, Darcy Rose Smiths, to be my lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better and for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part."
Ryan pronounced his vows with such emotion, that Darcy started crying in happiness. As Ryan put the silver wedding ring on her finger, Darcy beamed at him radiantly, causing Carl's heart to break even more. From his row, Carl watched in envy and tried hard not to go over there and steal the bride. Carl then, closed his eyes and mentally prepared himself to hear the words that forever would take his beloved apart from him.
"I, Darcy Rose Smiths…"
This is it.
"Take you, Ryan Mathew Adams…"
She will never be mine…
"To be my lawful wedded husband…"
It's too late; I'm dancing this dance alone…
"To have and to hold…"
This chapter's done, the story goes on…
"From this day forward…"
I can't believe you will never be with me…
"For better and for worse…"
You should be my lady…
"For richer and for poorer…"
But, if you believe that you belong with him…
"In sickness and in health…"
Promise me you won't let anyone hurt you…
"To love and to cherish…"
I'll do anything to make you happy, even if that means I have to see you in that wedding dress, marrying some else, killing me in the process…
"Until death do us part."
As Darcy placed the wedding ring on Ryan's finger, her fate was sealed, she was no longer Miss Smiths, but now she was Mrs. Ryan Adams, happy and glowing Mrs. Adams. Carl watched miserably as the priest pronounced them Husband and Wife. It was over. Darcy was forever someone else's woman, and all chance for them to be together was lost.
Carl Bailey exited the church while trying hard not to cry. He then looked back and saw Darcy all glowing greeting her family members and friends. Yes, it was killing him watching her in that damned wedding dress, yet he had to feel happy for her, because all that mattered in the end was Darcy's happiness, and if she had found that happiness in Ryan, then Carl would had to hang in there as he saw her in that wedding dress…
