"Why did I agree to this again?" Lucy asked her sister.
Her sister laughed and hit her on the back.
"Toughen up. You know you like the thrill in the end. This is the highest rollercoaster they have, and I want to ride it. You aren't scared, are you?" Mindy teased her twin.
Lucy looked up at the highest point of the ride and gulped. Her throat felt like it was closing and her palms grew sweaty. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She glanced at the line and then back to her sister. Lucy knew she would chicken out before she even made it to the front of the line. She shook her head and looked at her sister.
"I can't do it," she said, stepping back out of line for the second time. She was scared to death of heights. Mindy only wanted her to ride it because she knew Lucy was afraid and she loved teasing her sister about it. Lucy wanted out of there and fast. At that moment she didn't care if her sister teased her the rest of the day, she couldn't ride that rollercoaster.
She was only at the stupid amusement park because her sister begged her. Lucy only gave in after Mindy told her if she came she didn't have to buy her a gift for her birthday. Mindy wanted to go because of a long established tradition. When they were kids, their parents took them to the amusment park every year on their birthday. After the car accident, tradition stopped happening.
Lucy knew she should be having fun, it was her birthday too, but she didn't feel like celebrating. It wasn't the same since her parents weren't there. The park meant nothing to her but some old memories she shared with her parents.
When they died, Lucy took it hard. She hated herself for being away at school and missing the funeral because of exams. After dealing with her grief, Lucy knew she had to step up and take care of her sister. She was definitely the more responsible out of the two. Mindy was spoiled by their parents. She was the golden child that always got the good grades. She graduated from college a year early and was home at the time of the accident.
Mindy's looks and the way her parent's treated her made Lucy envious. She wanted her parents to dote on her and treat her like they treated Mindy. Instead her parent's always made Lucy the responsible one and she was always punished when she messed up.
"You know the only reason I'm here is because you begged me to come. I'm not riding that ride," Lucy continued. Mindy started pouting, but there was no way Lucy was changing her mind.
"Lucy, you have to ride this one with me. Mom and Dad used to ride it with me," Mindy whined. Lucy rolled her eyes. "Don't leave me."
"You're not alone! You have your friend," Lucy replied. Mindy was defenseless on her own. It was one of the reasons Lucy moved back in her parent's house to take care of her sister. If she left her sister to defend for herself, the laundry and dishes would never get done and the bills would go unpaid. Eventually Mindy would be without a house and be knocking on Lucy's door. There was no way that was going to happen, so Lucy stepped up and took control.
"Lucy, I want to ride with you," Mindy snapped.
"Maybe he will ride with you," Lucy suggested. She pointed to one of the many men in line who had been staring at her sister. It made Lucy gag, but she had to admit Mindy had a great body and good looks. Something that Lucy wasn't blessed with. That was yet another difference between her and her twin. Mindy got all the guys while Lucy was stuck at home, face buried in a book.
"He's cute," Mindy's friend Chandra commented. Mindy turned to see who the girls were talking about. She smiled.
"He is kind of cute," Mindy commented, smiling and twirling her hair. Lucy sneakingly backing away. Maybe while her sister was preoccupied she could escape. She had just turned when Mindy grabbed her arm.
"Lucy, don't do this to me," Mindy whined, sticking her lip out and crossing her arms.
"Mindy when we get to the front of the line you're going to want to ride with Chandra. That will leave me alone to ride this. That's not going to happen. I'm not riding this alone. I'm going to go get a drink. You have fun with Chandra. Call me when you're done." Lucy turned around to flee and slammed into a broad chest. She caught herself by placing her hands on their chest.
"I am so sorry," Lucy gasped. She straightened and looked up into a warm friendly face. Lucy hoped her face didn't resemble a tomato. She had just run into one of the hottest guys she'd ever seen. What an idiot. She felt like a fool. She tried to sidestep him, but he grabbed her arm. She looked up and caught a smile on his face. She felt her face turn even redder and she wanted to crawl under a rock and disappear.
She tried to speak, but the words caught in her throat. The man saved her from more embarrassment by speaking up. "Are you okay, miss?" he asked. Lucy nodded.
"I'm sorry for running into you." She looked around and caught her sister staring at her.
"Oh, it's fine. Accidents happen, especially at these places." He smiled softly at her and Lucy felt a shiver run down her spine. "Are you riding this?"
"Actually I was just fleeing. I'm afraid of heights and with an off number I'd have to ride by myself." Lucy shrugged. "What about you?"
"Well I'm actually with a group, but we're odd numbered also. If you'd like, I can ride with you," he offered. Lucy felt her heart skip a beat. Why was this guy still talking to her?
"Lucy, are you going to ride?" Mindy asked, stepping next to her sister. Lucy turned to face her sister.
"I offered to ride with her since she's outnumbered," the man answered for Lucy.
"Hi, I'm Mindy, this is my sister Lucy," Mindy replied, flashing an award winning smile. Lucy knew it was all over. Now the man would want to ride with Mindy and Lucy would be left to ride with Chandra. She wanted to leave.
"My name is Trent," he replied. Lucy looked up to find him looking at her. It shocked her. Wasn't he interested in Mindy? Lucy saw Mindy look at Trent and then back at her before sighing and walking back over to where Chandra was holding their place in line.
"Well, I'm going to get out of the way," Lucy stated, walking toward the exit. She felt someone following her and turned to see Trent keeping step with her. "Are you following me?"
"Well I don't really want to ride the coaster by myself, so I was going to see if you wanted to get a bite to eat while we wait?" he asked, running his hand through his windblown brown hair. It was the color of chocolate and made her want to replace his hand with hers. She wondered if it was as soft as it looked. "Is that okay?"
Lucy realized she had been staring and blushed. "That's fine."
Trent smiled. "Okay, cool. Lead the way."
Lucy started walking, not really sure what was going on. Why was this guy interested in her? She had no idea how to act or what to say. She was so awkward when it came to these situations. She wanted to run and hide, but knew she couldn't be a coward. It was time for her to break out of her shell. Maybe this was the perfect opportunity for her to do so. She smiled, ready to make the best of this.
Glancing at Trent out of the corner of her eye, Lucy couldn't help but admire his good looks. He had the perfect lips for kissing. Lucy couldn't help the dirty thoughts that floated across her mind when she pictured those lips kissing her all over. She shivered.
"Are you cold?" Trent asked, sounding concerned. Lucy smiled.
"No, I'm fine." She looked around, trying to get her bearings. She saw a pizza place and walked toward it. "Is pizza okay with you?"
"That sounds fine," Trent replied. As they made their way to the pizza place, Lucy went back to her perusal of her partner. His eyes were a pretty blue that made her think of the ocean. She wondered if he was wearing contacts to make them look that blue.
"Can I take your order?" the girl behind the counter asked Lucy. Lucy looked up at the menu and quickly ordered. She reached into her back pocket to grab some money, but Trent started ordering. What was he doing?
When he was done, he handed the lady a twenty and smiled at Lucy. She shot him a questioning look, but he just ignored it. After grabbing their food, Trent led her to a table. He set the tray down and then took a seat. Lucy grabbed some napkins and then walked toward the table. She was a little nervous.
When she sat down, she caught Trent staring at her. "What?" she asked, hoping she didn't have anything on her face.
"Nothing," he replied. He took a bite of his pizza and the table fell into a companionable silence.
"Do you like it?" Lucy asked, referring to the pizza. Trent nodded.
"It's really good," he answered. "So, do you and your sister come here often?"
"It's been a while. My parents used to bring us when we were little, but after they died we quit coming." Lucy took a bite of her pizza.
"I'm sorry," Trent said softly. Lucy shrugged.
"It's okay. Today is our birthday. That's the only reason I'm here. Mindy told me this could be her birthday present." Lucy took a drink and then pushed her empty plate away from her. "I didn't remember the rides being so short. I guess as a kid they seem like they last forever."
"This is actually my first time here," Trent admitted. Lucy stared at him in shock.
"Are you not from around here?" she asked.
"I'm about six hours away. I just never saw the point. Some of my buddies pressured me into coming. They'll probably ditch me now, but it's whatever." Trent finished his other slice of pizza and then took a big swig of his drink. "I'm having more fun with you anyway."
Lucy couldn't help the smile that spread across her face. "You're not bad company either."
"I'm glad you think that," he said, laughing.
"Got any siblings?" Lucy asked.
"Actually I have three brothers. Logan is the oldest. Braiden and Michael are twins and younger than me." Trent leaned back and got comfortable. Lucy crossed her ankles and leaned her elbows on the table.
"Twins, you say? Mindy and I are twins, though you probably couldn't tell," Lucy told him.
"Really? My brothers are identical twins." Trent smiled. "You and your sister look nothing alike. You have such a light blonde hair color while hers is almost black. Your parents have different hair colors?"
"My mom had the blonde hair like me. My dad had a light brown. I'm not sure where Mindy got her hair color from. She's also lighter complexioned while I tan easily." Lucy looked down at herself. "There are also a lot of other differences."
"My brothers are so much alike that at times it's almost impossible to tell them apart. It was worse when they were little and my mother dressed them alike. Braiden is the more laid back one while Michael is serious all the time. When you put them together they can get into a lot of trouble, but we still love them," Trent explained. Lucy laughed.
"Sounds like a lot of fun. At times I wish I had more siblings, but then I think of all the fighting Mindy and me do and I'm like nah," Lucy replied. Trent smiled.
"Do you mind me asking how your parents died?" Trent asked, growing serious. Lucy sobered up and looked off toward the crowded walkways. She glanced back at Trent.
"It was a car accident. The bodies were so damaged it was a closed casket funeral. They burnt up." Lucy felt tears in her eyes, but pushed them back. Trent reached across the table and took her hand.
"I'm sorry for asking. Please don't cry," he begged. Lucy sniffed.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't be crying. It's been years now. I should be over it," she apologized.
"Don't be sorry. There's nothing wrong with grieving and missing a loved one." Trent rubbed her hand gently and Lucy felt her body relax.
All of a sudden Trent tensed. Lucy looked up to find him staring at something over her shoulder. She looked over her shoulder, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. She turned back to find Trent still staring.
"What's wrong?" she asked. Trent snapped out of it and focused on her. He smiled.
"It's nothing, just thought I saw someone I know." Lucy couldn't tell if he was lying or not, so she let it go.
Trent sniffed the air and a huge grin broke out on his face. Lucy sniffed the air and caught what he was smelling. She smiled. "Want to go get some dessert?"
"Hell yea!" Trent grabbed their trays and got to his feet. He dumped the trash while Lucy grabbed their drinks. They headed straight for the funnel cake booth. Trent paid for the funnel cake again and Lucy tried to pay him back. He wasn't having it though and pushed a bite of funnel cake covered with powdered sugar in her mouth. When she was done chewing she laughed and then fed him a bite. She couldn't help but notice how intimate the gesture was. While she was feeding him, Trent stared into her eyes, not breaking eye contact. It was unnerving, but also made butterflies in her stomach.
After eating, they started walking around. Lucy knew that Mindy probably forgot about her, so she wasn't worried. Trent didn't seem to care about his group of friends. They stopped in front of a game. Trent looked at the basketball hoop and then back at Lucy.
"Would the lady like me to win her a prize?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrows. Lucy laughed.
"You don't have to waste your money on me. You've already bought me dinner and dessert!" she exclaimed. Trent just laughed and handed a five to the man behind the counter. He handed Trent three balls and Trent started shooting.
The first ball missed, but the last two went in. The man said they could have a medium prize. Trent gestured to the stuff animals on the wall and Lucy thought about it a moment. "I want the wolf one," she answered. Trent's eyes widened a fraction, but then went back to normal so fast, Lucy assumed she imagined it.
After taking the wolf from Trent, Lucy felt him take her hand. At first she was shocked, but then realized how nice it felt. She looked up to find him smiling at her. She smiled back bashfully and then lowered her head.
"Where to next?" he asked.
"Let's ride the Scrambler!" Lucy pointed to one of her favorite rides. Trent laughed but followed her as she pulled him toward the ride. Once in line, Trent stood really close to Lucy. She could feel his body heat and part of her wanted to lean back against his chest. She resisted the urge, knowing he'd probably think she was weird. They had just met; were basically strangers.
The line moved quickly and soon it was their turn to ride. Lucy climbed in first and then Trent. The man came around and locked their doors. They buckled up, Lucy holding tight to the wolf. Trent placed his hand on the back of the seat, behind Lucy's head. She kept her eyes facing forward. When Trent grabbed her hair, she froze. He rubbed the hair between his fingers and then let it fall. Lucy turned to face him just as the ride started. Immediately Lucy realized that Trent was on the outside and that mean she was going to be sliding into him.
After trying to hold herself on her side and failing multiple times, Lucy let go and slid right up against Trent. He wrapped his arm around her and held her closer. She made sure not to let the wolf slide off the seat. Lucy took a deep breath, taking notice of the cologne Trent was wearing. It was a nice fragrance. It made her want to snuggle closer.
When they got off the ride, Trent took Lucy's hand again. She could almost see them as a couple. He was sweet. Glancing around, she realized it was getting dark. After checking the time off some man's wrist watch, Lucy realized that it was close to closing time.
"I need to call my sister." Lucy reached into her pocket and then cursed. "Shit, I left my phone in my sister's bag."
"You can use mine," Trent handed her his phone. She took it and quickly dialed Mindy's number.
"Hello?" Mindy answered.
"Hey sis, it's Lucy."
"Where are you?" Mindy yelled into the phone.
"I'm heading to the car. Meet me there," Lucy said.
"Fine," Mindy hung up and Lucy rolled her eyes. She disconnected and handed the phone back to Trent.
"Thanks," she said.
"No problem," he replied. "Where did you park?"
"In the west parking lot," Lucy answered.
"I'll walk you to your car," he said.
"You don't have to do that. I know where it is."
"I don't want anyone to get you. You know there can be creeps anywhere," he said, shrugging. Lucy smiled.
"Thanks," she said. They began walking in silence.
Thunder sounded in the distance and a streak of lightning lit up the darkened sky. Lucy shivered as the cool November wind blew and ruffled her shirt. She crossed her arms, using the wolf to keep her warm. If early November was already this cold, she knew it would be a cold, rough winter.
Lucy noticed that most of the parking lot was deserted. Most people were trying to stay in the park as long as possible. It was dark and kind of quiet. It made Lucy nervous. She kept glancing around.
"Do I make you nervous?" Trent asked softly.
"No! No way," she answered. "It's just kind of creepy out here. I'm glad you're walking me to my car." Trent smiled at her and kept walking. He led her down an aisle and then stopped in the middle, turning to face her.
"Which car is it?" Trent asked, glancing around.
"That one," Lucy said, pointing toward the truck.
Lucy pulled out her keys and unlocked the side of her truck. She stuck the stuffed wolf into the back seat.
"Where are you parked?" Lucy asked. She didn't get a reply and turned to ask Trent again. She gasped when she saw that he was gone. She looked up and down the parking lot, but he was nowhere to be seen. She shut the door to her truck and shivered as another cold breeze blew toward her.
"Trent?" Lucy asked, hearing footsteps.
It was the last thing she heard before immense pain exploded behind her eyes and everything went black.
What do you think? Did this chapter flow better? I definitely like the edit! And it gave a little more interaction between Lucy and Trent. His betrayal will be damaging though... More updating soon!
