Returning to Him

Chapter twenty-seven

My head lay on Carter's shoulder, while I sat on his lap as he rubbed my back on our bed. It has been one day since I woke up and the hospital let me go home. Sheryl had not been arrest yet because Carter asked to be there during her arrest. They are going to go tonight to arrest Sheryl once we settle Clara in to bed because it has been very difficult putting Clara to bed because she thinks I am going to disappear again.

"Carter, I am tired," I whined, which made him chuckle.

"You have been tired since we brought you home, my baby. I love you, but this better not go on during the pregnancy," he whispered. "I wish I was there during your pregnancy with Clara to see how this one will be like."

I kissed his cheek. "I'll try not to be so mood for your sanity."

We became quiet, when the door slowly squeaked opened. Clara stood there with her teddy bear, Allie, and she was staring at us funny. We both looked at each other before our daughter crawled onto the bed and pushed me off her father just so she could lie on my stomach. She laid her head against my chest and she kissed my chin. I looked up at Carter and he was watching us with a smile on his lips.

"Belle, what are you doing?" I asked.

"Keeping you safe, Mommy," she replied. "Nobody can get through me 'cause I am super girl."

Carter and I both laughed and I ran a hand through her golden blonde hair. "You have been hanging out with your Uncle Gregory too much."

She shook her head. "No, Daddy said I was super girl."

"Well, maybe you have been hanging out with your daddy too much," I said.

Carter poked my tummy and I hit him in the shoulder with my arm that is wrapped around Clara. He bent down and kissed my nose before getting up and declaring it was Clara's bedtime. Clara groaned loudly and got off of me, so she could run to her bedroom. Carter kissed her cheek and, then, mine before leaving me to put her to bed. I locked Clara's bedroom door and I turned back to Clara, who was staring at me. I crawled onto the bed beside her and she laid her head against my chest with her body curled into the fetal position beside me.

"Is Daddy going to get that lady for hurting you and my brother, Mommy?" she asked.

"What do you know about that? And who said the baby is going to be a boy?" I questioned.

"Daddy wants a boy. Duh. So the baby will be a boy. Granny says it depends on what the guy wants," she said, smiling because she learned something new that really is a lie.

"What if the baby isn't a boy?" I kissed her forehead.

"Than your body doesn't work right, Mommy," she yawned.

I rolled my eyes and pulled her closer, so my dysfunctional body and I can feel that my daughter is safe with me. I watched as her eyes shut and listened to her lit cute snores that sound vaguely familiar to her father's snores even though Carter's are a little louder. I was probably half way asleep myself before I heard something rustle past Clara's door loudly like it knew I was in there or something. Whoever it was tried to open my baby's bedroom door, but couldn't because the door was lock and I let out a silent sigh of relief until that said person started unlocking the bedroom door with a quarter. Carter really needs to get one of those doors that only have a hole on the other side. I was blinded by light for a moment, but I was relieved to find that it was only Carter, who woke up Clara.

"Oh, thank god it is you," I breathed; getting up off the bed and wrapping my arms around his waist.

He raised his eyebrows. "Why? Who did you think it was?"

"That lady," Clara answered and Carter looked at her. "The lady with the really, really, really yellow hair, who has a big nose, Daddy."

Carter looked at me before looking at our daughter again. "Baby, go back to sleep. I am sorry for waiting you."

She nodded and blew a kiss to him, which he acted like he caught and placed it over his heart. I motioned for him to go away, so I could tuck Clara back into bed since Carter woke her up. I kissed her forehead and sat on the edge of her bed running a hand through her hair until she fell asleep. Then, I walked to my and Carter's bedroom.

His back was propped up against the headboard and his shirt was off. His eyes were closed and he had a little smile playing on his lips. I walked around to my side of the bed and crawled to where he was only to sit on his legs that were stretched out in front of him. I kissed his lips and ran my hands up and down his chest and then, he opened his eyes.

"How was the arrest?" I asked.

He shrugged. "She looked shocked at first, but I think she knew that you remember who hurt you after about three minutes. She would only look at me and now, my father is questioning her back in the police station." His brown eyes opened so I could see them. "She apologized to me for hurting you and she begged me to forgive her, but I didn't. She can't be forgiving for almost killing you and our unborn child."

I kissed his lips. "Let's just forget about this, Carter. Sheryl is going to jail and we are going to have a baby. It's all in the past. Now, sleepy time because I am so friggin' tired."

He laughed. "You already told me how tired you were, Char."

I laid my head against his chest and yawned. "'Night. 'Night," I whispered.

"Goodnight, Charlotte," he replied.

I let my tired eyes close, so I could drift off to Dreamland.
