The Sacrifice

Short Story By: Crystal Keeton

In the middle of a battle a young girl knows what she must do save her friends and to her its the biggest sacrifice there is.

I know this may not make sense at all. Just a little short story that I made when I had nothing to do. Hope you like it. Please review and no matter how bad, please no flames :)

The building exploded around me. The air mixed with debris and dust, making me cough. These zombies. They were smarter than what we were use to fighting. They are no longer brainless flesh eating freaks with rotting skin hanging from their bodies. They had minds. They set traps up. Traps that we fell for.

I coughed as I breathed in more debris. Looking around, I saw my friends helping each other up.

There was Ron. His black hair spiked up and his blue eyes bulged in fear. He was helping Tye. Her red hair was covered in dust and her light orange shirt tethered. The picture that had once stood on it had faded.

"Ron!" I called to him. He turned his head to me and nodded to let me know that I had his attention. "We need to get out of the building before it..." I couldn't finish. Chocking on more debris, I started coughing again.

"Kit..." He whispered my name. I had already closed my eyes and had collapsed to the ground. I felt his cold hands touch my arm. Feel his hot breath as he leaned close to my ear. "You can't die on me... you just can't..." His voice came out in a hoarse whisper, fear filled its tone.

I managed to make my eyes snap open. "I'm not going to die... I'm stronger than that..." I whispered through coughs.

He breathed a sigh relief but his eyes still betrayed fear. "You better not die..." He said after a moment's pause. He helped me to my feet and supported me as Tye made her way towards us.

"Thank God..." She breathed. "What happened?"

"Breathed in too much of that debris." I replied. My throat was finally clearing up but I still felt weak. "We need to get out of here before the building collapses."

Both Ron and Tye nodded. Tye was shaking with fear. Ron laid a hand on her skinny shoulder to reassure her. "We are all getting out of here alive..." He whispered.

I sure hope so... I can't stand the thought of losing my friends... I thought.

Together, with the help of Ron, we started our way through our ruined headquarters. This was the place we had spent the past three years in. The place we had grew to call home. Its strong brick structure and its massive size had served as protection to the flesh eating freaks.

Now, in it's ruined state, it was nothing. It's once strong walls had crumbled at the impact of the bomb that the zombies had set. How they had set up a bomb, let alone find one I would never know. These zombies were different. They had to be. They could think. They could kill. We were no longer the hunter but the hunted. Just like that the hunter became the prey. That was what we were. We were the prey.

I turned to Ron. "These zombies... they..." I couldn't finish. I couldn't say what I had feared. I had lived through it all.

I was only ten years old when they bombed us. Took out everything, it did. All the fresh, lush green grass. All the tall oak trees. They were wiped out. I had took cover just in time. But my parents... they didn't. I found them, weeks later.

Skin hung from mother's one soft, smooth skin. Her body had turned green and her breath, rotten. She was one of the victims that had surcome to becoming a zombie. I had to kill her. Had to put her out of her misery. I still remember raising the pistol. That sickening sound of the bullet hitting my mother's skull. I had to do the same thing to my father.

That was when I met Ron. He had just also lost his parents. We had that in common at least. He was a year older than me, standing tall and muscular. Then came little Tye, youngest of the group. She was two years younger then me.

A low moan jerked me out of the past. We skidded to a halt. We had ran right into an ambush. Instantly, we were circled by at least fifty zombies.

"Can this day get any worse..." Tye wailed.

I shook my head. There was no way we could get out of here alive. At least not all of us. That was when it hit me. I shot five of the zombies with the machine gun that a held in my hand.

"Guys, go on ahead! I'll hold them off!" I yelled.

Ron shook his head. "I'm not leaving you!"

Tye agreed.

I let out a frustrated sigh. "Leave! Now! I'll be fine!"

"Promise?" Ron asked, his voice shaking with fear. The guy usually never feared anything. Why now?

"Yes I promise" Anything to get them to safety.

Reluctantly, Ron and Tye slipped away why I kept the zombies busy. When they were to safety I fired my last shot, watching one of the flesh eating freaks hit the ground. I then turned tail and ran as fast as my slender body let me. Ron and Tye were nowhere in sight. I flung myself down a flight of stars. While running, I peered out a window and heaved a sigh of relief. Standing outside, in a pile of rubble, were my two friends. They had escaped at least.

Ron, forgive me! I begged silently. I skidded to a halt and reached into the pocket of my ripped jeans and pulled out what could save both of my friends lives from these zombies with minds. It was a bomb. One I had been saving for a while. No one knew I had it. One click of the button and the whole building would crumble. The thing was, my life would be taken with it.

I let a sigh escape me. It was the price to be paid to save my friends. My finger made its way through the air to the button. Slowly, I pushed it down. The explosion jerked my body backwards. Pain shot through me. My ears rung. Then everything went black. And I knew that my friends were safe.

~Ron's Point of View~

He watched in horror as the building crumbled into nothing but rubble. He knew what had happened. He somehow knew. Kit had just sacrificed herself to save them.

Without thinking, he rushed to the rubble that use to be the building. Digging through debris, he found the limp body of his friend. He body was badly damaged. There was a big gaping hole in her stomach were blood poured freely. He swallowed.

Then something happened. Her eyes flickered open. Her beautiful light green eyes. They were full of pain.

"Ron..." She whispered.

"Y...you promised..." He sobbed, trying to hold back the tears that now poured freely.

"Ron..." She whispered again. "I...I n...need to te...tell y...you something..." She struggled to say though jolts of pain. "I...I love you..." Her body jerked once more and then she went limp. Her eyes clouded into small pools of green. She was gone. Truly gone.

"I love you too..." He whispered back, stroking her smooth, black hair. He hugged her close and broke down into sobs.
