The day the dead awoke I was at home, it was a normal day. I remember it like it was yesterday.
"Mom I want to make sure all the presents are wrapped for Todd's family before I have to leave tomorrow. I have to leave for the airport before two thirty! So please can you help me?" My daughter Maria asked.
It was hard to believe she was married and going to spend this Christmas with her husband Todd's family. We were having a pre-Christmas tonight. This Christmas was off to a bad start.
"Sure let's get that out of the way now so we can have our Christmas and not worry about wrapping more presents tomorrow." I said.
"Ok I will go get them, do you have any tape or do you need me to bring some down?" Maria asked.
"I have one roll down here do you think that will be enough?" I said
Maria answered with a simple "yes" and started her way up the stairs. I started cleaning of the table to get ready to wrap the presents. Maria came down the stairs with a armful of small gifts for the Gray family. We quickly wrapped the presents and started pre-Christmas dinner. As soon as the food was finished everyone joined us at the dinner table. My husband Wilbert, Maria, Todd-Maria's husband of three months, Wilbert's brother Ricky, my sister Angelica and her eight year old daughter Olivia. We were all laughing and joking around the table. Wilbert telling jokes of our first Thanksgiving together, how I ended up burning everything and we had to go out to Lucky's Diner. Wilbert was just about to go into another story of how that Christmas dinner was just a bad. When the phone rang.
"I wonder who that could be?" Wilbert asked as I got up to answer the phone.
"Hello Ashdale family, JoAnna speaking".
"Jo it's Matt ge- fam- g-" Matt said his phone was breaking up.
"Matt are you there? The phone is breaking up." I spoke into my end of the receiver.
The phone went dead. I walked back over to the table.
"Who was that on the phone Jo?" asked Wilbert as I was sitting down to resume dinner.
"It was Matt, but his phone went dead. He is probably coming in from the country." I said.
After dinner we went and sat around the tree and opened presents! I got a beautiful necklace from Wilbert that had our names engraved into the metal plate with ours birth stones.
"I love it Wil!" I said as I leaned over and kissed him. As everyone opened their presents I just sat there and I couldn't remember a time I was happier!
I was pulled out of my memory as I heard something in the woods. I jumped up onto my feet from the hard ground I was sitting on.
"Wilbert? Is that you?" I whispered just in case it wasn't. I couldn't draw attention to myself anymore than that.
"Yeah It's me Jo." He answered in the darkness.
"Thank God! I was getting so worried y'all were gone for so long!" I said as I hugged him.
"We are lucky. There was a herd of those bastards up there. They almost got me." Ricky said walking into my sight.
"Thank God you BOTH are okay and back." I patted him on the shoulder.
"We need to get moving it won't be long before they figured out where we are." Wilbert said giving orders.
"I hope everything at camp is ok. Angie was nervous about me leaving. I should have stayed, but I couldn't let you to go alone!" I said picking up the ax I had where I was sitting. We started walking back to the place we at the moment called camp. Which wasn't really much of a camp, just an old log cabin we found back in the woods that no one else had claimed except the owner who was now dead. We found him inside eating a woman- who I proclaim was his wife. We killed him just like we killed the others who threatens us. Who wanted to kill us not by free will of course. Whatever sickness they had was taking over their head making them crazy, making them crave human flesh. It was the end of the world as we knew it, the dead rose from the ground and we are fighting to survive. We protect the loved ones we have left and pray we make it to tomorrow.
