If I seem distant, I am;

I am not at home today.

I know not when I shall return,

The Mistress didn't say.

I am servant to myself;

My own lady and maid.

-

Subtle flaws in character

Create the stepping stones.

I am loyal only to my Madam,

For it is her I owe.

-

I wear a collar,

I wear a crown;

With shackles placed to hold me down.

-

I swear my Mistress I won't run away,

She swears it just to keep me safe.

I dare not push her,

She may break.

Then what would happen to my slave?

-

Child from the poorest means,

Bankrupt even of her dreams.

I took her under to watch her grow;

I promised not to let her go.
