This girl was starting to drill on my nerves. First she inserts herself into my life and next she's demanding information. Resting my head in my hand and leaning on the couch, I watched Peyton pace in front of me impatiently.
"Iris and Lily," she presented for the fifth time.
I resisted the urge to shrug. "I said I don't know."
Peyton nodded quickly while still pacing. "I know. She never mentioned her favorite flower?"
This was not the first time this question had been asked either. It wasn't like Ariel and I spent every day together. We had a few moments in passing on and one major moment later on when we were older. It wasn't like I was going to waste my time by talking. I had assumed I would've had time for that later on.
"Sorry that never came up," I answered sarcastically.
Someone knocked on my front door and Peyton stopped pacing immediately. She sent me a questioning look but this time I did shrug for an answer. I had no idea who would be stopping by. Peyton stalked over to the door and I spied Sean enter into my apartment. They exchanged a greeting before Sean joined me in the living room.
"Hey, are you ready for tonight?" Sean plopped down on my loveseat and Peyton leaned on the loveseat behind him. She sent me another questioning look. I had to think for a few minutes what Sean even meant. And then it clicked.
"Aw, is it Wednesday already?" I had completely forgotten about my little weakly tradition with Sean. It had started as a coincidence about a month ago and we just kept it up now because we could.
"Yes," Peyton answered still obviously confused.
Sean glanced back at her and explained, "We got to a movie every Wednesday."
Peyton suppressed a smile unsuccessfully. "How very feminine of you both."
"It is not," I argued.
She glanced my way. "You have a date every Wednesday to go to the movies."
Sean shook his head in disapproval. "Women never understand."
"We certainly don't," Peyton agreed.
Suddenly I thought of the girls Peyton was harping on me meeting. That was supposed to happen tonight.
"Sorry Sean, we're busy tonight," I said suddenly. Sean looked over at me hurt and confused.
"No we're not," Peyton corrected surprisingly. "Go have your boy bonding time."
"Why don't you join us?" Sean suggested nicely.
"No thanks," she denied. "But can I speak with Nate privately before I leave?"
"Sure," Sean replied making no attempt to get up. I sighed and new that he wasn't going to move for me. I moved from the couch and followed Peyton to wherever she wanted to go. She went into my guest bedroom where Pyro was sleeping on the big bed.
"How much does he know?" she asked almost right away.
I sighed half ashamed of my answer. "He doesn't know anything."
She just nodded in understand. "Okay, well tomorrow we are going to Manhattan to meet Iris then Queens to meet Lily."
"Tomorrow?" I asked confused. Surely we were going to see the girls tonight so I thought Peyton was prolonging our meeting with those girls. "I'd thought we would go after the god party."
"You thought wrong," she said easily. "The party is a week away and I am not going to waste precious time."
"You just want to set me up with the right person so I forget you and this god party, then you won't have to take me," I replied crossing his arms defiantly. That totally made sense and it would get her out of taking me. She did not seem the least bit excited to have to take me when her grandfather suggested it.
Peyton seemed to think. "Well, that wasn't my plan but it sounds good to me."
I scoffed but held the bedroom door open for her to let her exit before me. I don't know why she was so hell bent on not taking me with her. She could just not rather than repeatedly remind me that she didn't want to. She went through the door and gathered her things from the living the room. I followed her out and sat across from Sean once again.
"You guys sure know how to do a quickie," he commented.
I rolled my eyes at his lame attempt at a joke and Peyton left without a word of goodbye.
"Cut the jokes," I told him once she was gone.
Sean furrowed his eyebrows. "Wow, she's got you all riled up."
I took a deep breath in before letting it out. "Yeah. She's good at that."
"Well, let's go see a bloody slasher movie, that'll make you feel better!" Sean suggested.
I sighed feeling awful at how I acted. If Peyton didn't want to take me to the party, then that was her choice. She didn't have to. My attitude was probably not helping her make that decision to take me. I was a being a jerk. I just wanted to see this world that she knew all about. It seemed exciting and new. Plus, hanging out with Peyton, while typically annoying, was turning out to never be boring. A party with her could be nothing but a big ball of fun. But it seems that I had irritated her enough that she was rethinking taking me.
I sighed at my thoughts. "Yeah, let's go."

Inside the cab with Peyton, it was nothing but tense. Not a word had been said since we met and shared a stiff greeting. Now, we were on our way to Manhattan to meet the first girl on our lists. I couldn't honestly say that I was excited.
"Are you mad at me?" I finally asked.
Peyton glanced over and gave me a warm smile before sighing. "No. You're going to go to the party."
I tried my best not to smile like an idiot. "How do you know?"
We met each other's eyes. "Because you won't forget me until you say 'I love you' and mean it. I'll know when you mean it…" she mumbled something under her breath that I didn't catch.
"Oh," I replied happily. "Well, okay then."
"How was the movie?"
I shrugged unsure of the answer she wanted. "It was alright. I have dinner with Sean and his wife tomorrow and he invited you."
"Okay, I guess I can fit him into my schedule."
"Thanks for giving him a chance," I replied seriously. Sean could seem to be hard to handle but he was really an awesome guy.
"Yeah, I figure if I'm going to be around you then I'm going to be around your friends."
I nodded thankful that she thought that way. We drove the remaining way to Manhattan in a comfortable silence. Once we arrived, we were both in search from some cheesily named flower shop.
We found it and Peyton paid the driver to taking us. Inside the shop, the temperature dropped dramatically.
"Geez," Peyton muttered hugging herself. "It's colder in here than outside and it's freaking November!"
I agreed with a nod and we walked around the little shop to wait for someone to appear. Peyton walked to the other side of the room to look at the bouquets. There was no one around; not even a cashier at the counter. Finally, I called out to hopefully get someone's attention.
"Hello?"
"Just a sec," a female voice called back.
I noticed Peyton staring at one fridge with bouquets in particular. I snuck over to her and tried to spy what she was studying so intently.
"What are you looking at?" I whispered near her ear. She jumped and shot me a glare.
"Those carnations," she replied after a moment and pointing to them. "The blue ones are my favorite."
"Really?" I asked curiously. Peyton nodded with a small smile on her face. She opened the cooler and took one of the blue flowers. She smelled its fresh scent and her grin grew wider which in turned made me smile at her expression.
"Can I help you?"
We turned and glanced toward the voice as a girl entered into the room. She was the one girl from one of the pictures and it was most certainly not Ariel.
"Are you Iris?" Peyton asked.
She unsurprisingly nodded.
"She's not the one," Peyton whispered over to me. I could've told her that myself but didn't respond. Peyton twirled the flower in her hands and looked disappointed at the fact that she had to put it back. She opened the cooler once again but I grabbed it from her hands much to her surprise.
"Well, let's not make a thirty minute drive a complete waste," I replied quietly. I took the flower over to the cashier and hand her the flower while introducing myself. I made up a story claiming that we heard about it through a friend and they had said her name which is why we asked. Iris was all but nice about everything.
I handed the flower over to Peyton after it had been paid for.
"I do hope that your girlfriend enjoys her flower," Iris said looking at the both of us.
Peyton opened her mouth to correct her when I just smiled at her. She dropped it and stroked the soft petal leaves to avoid eye contact. It was just easier to not explain our situation.
I grinned at her as she smelled her flower and smiled to herself. We both said goodbye to Iris and left the shop.
"Thank you."
"No problem," I replied stuffing my hands into my pockets. We walked with not real direction down the streets in Manhattan. Peyton kept the flower near her face and her smile just continued to grow.
"Where do you get money?" she asked randomly.
"It's an angel thing," I explained vaguely. It seemed too complicated and weird to explain more thoroughly.
"I get money from a godly bank account," Peyton announced suddenly. She explained how that all works for her.
"I get money into a personal bank account," I admitted then.
"From where? You don't work."
I nodded unsure of how to explain. I did my best though to explain what how everything worked.
"So basically, every angel is bought before they come to Earth?"
That was putting it into the simplest terms possible but since she was correct, I nodded.
"There is still nothing stopping you from telling," Peyton argued.
"No one wants to be observed 24/7 by some scientist or TV reporter and if they do, they aren't going to get 'paid' anymore."
"But once the secret is out then it's out?"
"I don't really know what would happen. It hasn't happened yet and we've been here for years." I shrugged unsure of what she wanted from me. I added after a moment, "Don't you think it would be easier if the world knew?"
Peyton gazed down and thought for a moment. "Eventually maybe; but it would hard when it first happens."
"I just hate moving every few years and keeping this from everyone. Sean doesn't know anything and I feel terrible about it. Maybe when he's on his deathbed, I will show up looking the same as I do now and tell him everything but then he'll hate me."
"My friend knows," Peyton replied. "But she's still looking for her soul mate."
"When she finds him, she will forget about you and the god world?" I assumed.
Peyton nodded and sighed as her smile fell. I stopped walking as her mood dropped.
"Why don't we go meet the other girl?" I suggested eager to change the subject.
She seemed to be thankful for the change and worked on hailing a cab.
Once we had one, we drove on our way to Queens where the other girl lived. She worked at some environmental agency that seemed fitting for an angel of nature. I had worked in many restaurants and food institutions.
It took about half an hour to drive there with the New York traffic. We decided to walk to the huge skyscraper building where we took an elevator to get to the 28th floor. We were directed a few more places which really started to annoy me.
We entered into a space that was full of cubicles when Peyton stopped me in my tracks and looked around. Her eyes lit up and she ran off when she spotted a girl with red hair. I followed her as she jogged up to the girl.
"Are you Lily?" Peyton asked. I could've easily answered for her but didn't get the chance.
This random girl laughed and pointed off in some random direction. "No, Lily's desk is over there."
We both glance over to where there was a blonde at a cubicle working to herself. Peyton slowly walked off and I followed behind unsure of what was happening.
"Hello," Peyton greeted immediate as we arrived.
"Hi," the new girl replied happily. Her brown eyes glanced between the both of us as her smile widened.
"Are you Lily?" Peyton asked slowly.
"That's me," she agreed. I studied the girl in front of me. She seemed familiar but… I still felt unsure. Peyton turned to look at me and I could only stare at this new girl in front of me.
"Ariel?" I tried after a moment. Her eyes widened and she gazed down at her lap before meeting my eyes once again. She scanned over my face trying to recognize me.
"No one's called me that in hundreds of years," she whispered.
"It's me," I announced lamely pointing at myself. "Nathaniel, Angel of Fire."
"Oh my goodness!" Ariel mumbled astonished. "It's been so long!"
"It has," I agreed with a smile.
Peyton stepped to the side as Ariel, or Lily, and I continued to talk. She had changed her name because she had wanted a new start and always loved the flower. After a few more minutes of catching up, someone warned Lily to get back to work. I hurriedly gave her my number and she gave me hers. I promised to call her later before we left so we could officially catch up.
The cab back to Brooklyn seemed to go by pretty quickly even though the traffic was as awful as before.
"God, she looked good. I didn't expect the hair but still. It's been forever. I remember when we first saw each other in our Acadmy school. She was so nice to me and it was the first time anyone had ever cared about me-" I was rambling but I found that I couldn't stop. Suddenly, ever moment, touch, sound, and sight all came back to me. It was exciting to think of all the new memories I could create.
I could even remember why I didn't want to find this girl in the first place. Now, all I could think of was seeing her again. The thought made me smile the whole cab ride home.
Wow, two weeks late? I know. I'm awful. Call me every bad word in the dictionary that you want. I will take it because I deserve it.
Yes, college is now kicking my butt. In fact, I'm not doing homework now when I should be. But I wanted to get this out. So I hope it was worth the wait. It'll be Nate's POV for a little while. But we'll see some scenes and stuff that we didn't get to later on. I cannot tell you what's coming next because I have honestly no idea.
Again guys, if you want more information on when I will be updating, go and like my Facebook page or follow me on Twitter (links to both on my profile).
I'm hoping to get an HBA chapter out but I am seriously not counting on it at all this weekend. We'll see about next weekend though.
Sorry I'm so late with updating! I hope this was worth the wait! Nate! :D
