It was ten past six in the morning and Niki was walking towards her school.

It was an all girl boarding school and she liked it that way because she already had an older brother and had to deal with him after school and on holidays.

While Niki made her way down the long winding dirt road that lead to the school's front gate she noticed a black cat slinking around the oak tree that grew beside the gate.

She had heard that black cats were bad luck but she was not afraid. Unlike the other kids at school, she didn't believe in such nonsense.

She walked straight up to the gate and walked up to the school's double doors.

As she made her way into the school she noticed two of the girls that went there hiding behind the wall.

"It won't work, you can't scare me I can see you." She said as she turned the corner to look at them.

"You aren't scared of anything Niki, what's wrong with you you aren't like other girls in this school who jump at the sound of a door slam or wind blowing a window shut." Riley said looking at Niki.

"Well that's because I grew up with an older brother who always tried to spook me, but I got use to it and now I scare him." Niki replied.

All of a sudden the school bell rang, making Riley and her friend jump.

"Well I see that you both are easily spooked by the sound of a school bell." Niki said before making her way to class.

Later that day at lunch Niki had gone outside to the oak tree to eat.

She spotted the black cat that she met this morning.

"Hello there I see that you're not afraid of anything either." Niki said sitting down by the tree trunk.

The cat looked up at her and meowed as if saying I'm not scared. Niki scratched behind her ear as she purred.

Niki's brother Scott came walking up to the gate.

"Hi sis, are you ready to come home for the holiday?" He said looking at her.

Niki stood up holding the cat in her arms.

"Yes, I've been waiting for this day for along time." She said looking at Scott.

"I see you made a new friend." He said noticing the cat in her arms.

"I just hope mother will let me keep her." Niki said as she walked through th front gate toward her brother.

"I'm sure she will." Scott smiled as they followed the dirt road back to their house.

Once they reached the door to their house Scott opened it as he and Niki walked inside.

Niki walked up the stairs that led to her room.

As she turned the doorknob the cat leapt down out of her arms, but didn't run.

Then Niki walked into her room the cat followed.

"Make yourself at home." Niki said watching the cat leap onto her bed.

She stretched in the sun light that floated through the window by the bed.

"If mother let's me keep you maybe I should think of a name for you." Niki said as the cat curled up on the bed.

The cat's fur was as black as the night sky and her eyes were emerald green.

"How about Magick?" Niki said looking into her eyes.

Niki heard a knock at the door,

"Come in!" She called as the door creaked open.

It was Scott, he had dark orange red hair just like Niki but shorter and icy blue eyes, his skin was tan because he spends most of his days outside in the hot sun.

"Is it alright if I enter the inner circle of magic?" Scott asked, looking at Niki.

She smiled and laughed at his joke, he always joked around with her about her love of magic and how someday she might be a witch.

"Yeah it's safe, I promise not to curse or hex you." She said as he walked into the room.

"So what are you going as this Halloween?"

"Which by the way will be in about five hours." He said sitting down on her bed next to the cat.

"I really don't know I'm sure I can throw something together." Niki said sitting down on the other side of Magick.

"Well if you'd like I can walk you to town, maybe they'll have some costumes left." Scott said scratching Magick's chin.

"I'm just going to put on my school uniform and some make-up to look like a zombie." Niki said looking up at her closet.

"Alright, I'll go help mother out in the garden, she'll need help picking up the pumpkin to carve this year." Scott said standing up and walking to the door.

Once he left Niki undressed then put on her school uniform, which was a white blouse with a red tie and a plaid skirt.

Then she slipped on her black with silver buckle shoes.

Next she ran out of her room and down the hall way to the bathroom, Magick quickly followed her.

She turned on the light and opened her cabinet and grabbed her dark ruby red lipstick.

After she had put on her make-up, she looked in the mirror one last time to check her reflection.

Then she ran down stairs to the kitchen to find her brother setting a huge over-grown pumpkin onto the counter.

"Well I'm ready when you are." Niki said walking into the kitchen.

"Well I'll only walk you to your friend's house, but after that I got to meet up with my friends for the Halloween party that Katie's throwing." Scott said looking up at her.

"Oh! I see you'd rather be with Katie, the hot blonde at your school who has all the boys swooning over her." Niki said as she made a face like she was gagging.

"Niki, you're fifteen that's old enough to go trick-or-treating on your own without me walking you to Izzie's house." He said walking to the door.

He opened it and slammed it behind him.

Just then Niki's mother came into the kitchen, her hair was in her face from being blown by the strong Autumn winds.

Her auburn hair matched her fair skin and her beautiful hazel eyes.

"Hello mother, have a nice day in the garden?" Niki said to her mother.

"Why yes I did, this lovely weather is perfect for gardening." She answered.

"I can see that you're ready for Halloween." Her mother said noticing Niki's costume.

Then they heard a knocking at the kitchen door.

Niki walked over to the door and looked out the small square window in it, she saw a man standing there looking back at her.

He had pale skin dark, brown messy hair and chestnut brown eyes that twinkled in the mid-day sun.

Niki recognized the man so she opened the door letting him in.

"Good afternoon Niki and Mrs. Bailey." The man said bowing to Niki and her mother.

"Please call me Katty, Greg." Niki's mother said as the man stopped bowing.

"Right, sorry Katty." Greg said looking up at her.

"Hello Greg how are you?" Niki said looking up at Greg.

"I'm good, I just came by to make sure you were coming to the Halloween ball tonight." Greg said.

"Yes, we always do Greg." Katty said looking up at him.

"Well I'll see you there then." He said opening the door and stepping outside.

"I'm going to go find Scott and get him to walk me to Izzie's." Niki said to her mother as she left the kitchen.

She made her way into the living room to see Scott sitting on the couch talking on the phone.

"Come on Scott, you promised to walk me to Izzie's." Niki said quietly walking up to him.

"Alright I'm coming." He said hanging up the phone.
