The sound of rain pattered down on the roof and the sounds of feet on the gravel car park filled the air. 15 Year old Takao Gato and his father walked up, into the pub. It was dark out, and Takao's father had to sort some business out with someone inside. As soon as Takao opened the door, loud music blasted out at him. The place was fairly old, and was just a room with a counter for drinks and tables. Takao's father headed straight for the counter and got some drinks. Takao, however, went and sat at an empty table and waited for his father.
"Is he here yet?" Takao asked
His father looked around the room.
"Not yet"
Takao sighed. It was going to be a long night and he knew it. About half an hour passed and still no luck. He could sense that even his dad was getting bored. Takao stood up and walked to the door.
"Where are you going, son?" His father asked.
"Outside" Takao said
He walked out of the place. His father stared at the door as it closed and then turned his head.
"Oh wait... There he is!" Father smiled, and waved at the other man across the room
Takao walked across the gravel path again, and stood still. He sighed and inhaled the country air around him. There was a sudden sound of a horn and bright lights.
"HEY KID! GET OUT OF THE WAY!"
Takao turned and looked, but before he could do anything, his vision blurred, he was knocked to the ground and the poor boy blacked out. A car had hit him.
Days later, Takao was awoken by the sound of a woman walking in high heels. He opened his eyes and looked at the woman standing in front of him. She wore clean white clothes and had long brown hair
"Where am I?" Takao asked
"Hospital, you took quite a hit out there" She smiled
Takao was still in a daze, and pumped full of pain killers.
"By the way, you broke your arm" The nurse added
Takao groaned. The window was wide open and the curtains were flapping around everywhere.
"Can I get you anything?"
"No... I'm fine thanks" Takao smiled
Takao put his head onto his pillow again and lay down. He kept replaying the memory in his head and thinking about how sudden the event was. The car literally came out of nowhere and he didn't even hear it. The nurse had left since he had started to think about this, and she didn't even close the window. A feather floated through the window. It wasn't a normal feather, it was different. For a start, it was purely white, and it was larger than an average feather, slightly larger than that of a heron's. It floated into the room and landed on a chest of drawers in the corner. Takao could still walk, so he got out of his bed and walked over to it. He picked it up and held it in his hand for a while. It was soft, like silk and seemed to reshape automatically whenever he separated the fibres
"What'cha got there?"
Takao turned round. It was his youngest sister, Misaki. She was 12 years old and was the youngest of the three siblings. Takao presented her with the feather.
"Where'd you get this?" Misaki asked
"I dunno, it just floated into my room through the window"
Takao walked over and fumbled with the latch, closing a window was not a task that could be performed with only one arm.
"Can you help me out?" Takao asked sheepishly
Misaki walked up to the window and helped him. Misaki still held onto the large feather. She looked down at it and rubbed it with her thumb.
"Do you want this back?" Misaki asked
Takao stuck his hand out and Misaki put it in there. He placed it on the bedside table and sat on the bed. Misaki came and sat by him.
"Does it hurt?" She asked
"A bit, but I can bare it"
Misaki looked at the clock on the wall
"I need to go. Big sister drove me down here, and she promised to take me shopping after school" She said
"Okay, goodbye"
Misaki picked up her school bag and walked out. Their older sister was 19 years old and had just passed her driving test. His father got her a car and she's been driving around a lot. The nurse walked back into the room, holding a tray of food.
"How do you feel?" The nurse asked
"A bit dizzy"
"Yeah, you'll get that, you're just filled with painkillers and such. That'll go away soon."
Takao looked out of the window. More of those feathers were falling. Something fell from the sky, about the same size as a human. There was a loud thud as it hit the ground.
"Nurse!" Takao said, running to the window "Did you see that?"
She looked at him.
"No... I think you're hallucinating..."
"I'm not!"
The nurse had a concerned look on her face.
"Lie down, please. Just take a rest, the medicine makes you do that"
"Nurse, I'm not hallucinating."
She refused to walk over and see for herself
"Do you want me to get you some water?"
"No... Thank you though"
The nurse walked out of the room and Takao stared at the small crater the thing had left in the ground. Feathers fluttered down and landed by it. There was a dust cloud covering it, so he couldn't make out exactly what it was, and squinting hurt his eyes. The road where it landed was empty, and no one in the hospital seemed to notice it. Was it really just a hallucination? Takao slumped himself down on the bed and the nurse returned with a pitcher of ice water, despite saying he didn't want anything.
"Thank you" Takao said
The nurse left the room once again and Takao followed her. He had been in a mini-coma for about 3 days according to the calendar, so there must be some improvement in his arm. Takao walked over to the crater and stared
"Hello?" He asked
