Prologue
A Forgotten Life & Deaths Separation
"Heaven?"
Daimen seemed confused a he looked up at the black cloaked and winged angel man whose face was hidden behind the shadows dropped over his features by the hood he wore and whom gripped the long handle of a scythe. I wondered what the lengthy red ribbons that began at the tip of the handle and swirled down continuously off the handle and curved fluidly around the man meant; with each quivering movement of the ribbons a crimson thread dripped away from the mass of red and floated down gracefully onto the clouds.
The man pointed the tip of the arched scythe blade at me wordlessly. I narrowed my eyes at him but pushed closer to Daimen in fear of what his action had meant. "What's goin' on?" I whispered up to Daimen. He looked down on me, he's shaggy black hair falling over his onyx black eyes that were trimmed in flaming red, and shook his head as if the question couldn't be asked by me because I was to young to receive a answer. I stamped my foot and clenched my fist but Daimen didn't care he simply looked back to the dreary angel.
"I won't see her again will I?" he asked his voice firm and hard but I knew him to well, I could hear his voice breaking underneath the cover up of toughness. Who was this girl he spoke of? He couldn't be speaking about me. Daimen was my guardian, my best friend, my family…he wouldn't just leave me here with this angel man alone!
Could he…?
Would he…?
As my thoughts ran wild with my imagination I felt Daimen pull his hand away from mine. My heart skipped a beat and dropped into my stomach. I could feel it being ate away at slowly by acid. "Rosexana," his voice was cold and blank, still I could hear the Daimen no one ever saw or ever heard in him. Was that my name? I hadn't thought about much of anything since I had arrived here, whenever that was and wherever this was. Suddenly though I realized something that horrified me; I didn't remember anything. My name, who I was, where I had come from, what life I had lead, nothing-but I remembered Daimen.
I remembered he'd been there for me since day one-whatever day that was I didn't know. He'd always done whatever he could for me. Had we lead a life together? I didn't know and it frustrated me to no end. Non the less I remembered Daimen, but everything else was a blur of fuzzy memories I couldn't recall clearly.
"Rosexana, I've gotta go…" Daimen breathed slowly. He had turned away from me so now we were back to back. I could feel myself trembling, tears cluttered together and blurred my vision until everything was mingling together in a clutter of confusion. "P-Please don't leave…" I whispered my knees buckling underneath me and sending me to the ground that was once clouds but now it was a dark tiled hall of darkness. "I gotta go Rosie." he said firmly his heavy footed steps, cliunk! cliunk!-ing, around me, echoing emptily.
He could…
He would…
The man approached me cautiously as if I possessed something dangerous inside of me. I curled deeper into myself as I closed my eyes trying to push away the pain. "N-no!" I screamed shrilly pushing back up to my feet and swirling on my heel to face Daimen. He had went rigid at my scream but hadn't turned around. I saw why.
In the distance of the eerie hall just beyond the arching end of the darkness, flames licked up around the edge. Red hot flaming sin wafted over me suddenly and I felt something stir inside of me that I didn't think I was supposed to feel. "Just let it go Rosexana." he growled at me in annoyance. My fist clenched tighter at his words. From what little I remembered he'd never spoke to me like that. I prayed silently that it was the flames doing this to him and not me.
"I don't remember anything!" I cried out chocking on my tears as I tried desperately to force them down. He looked over his shoulder a me. "Your not supposed to." he muttered taking another step closer to the edge of the hall, towards the sinful and maddening flames, and farther away from me. "But I remember you!" I shouted as the flames began to roar with impatience. Were they awaiting Daimen's arrival?
He shrugged, "Just forget about me Rosie. It's over." he said quietly his voice echoing hollowly back to me through the hall. He walked closer and closer to the edge that the fire was now eagerly awaiting to consume him.
Maybe it was the fact I was losing Daimen, the only thread I had left to who I was, or maybe it was the furnace of flames persuasion over my body for a moment. Whatever it was it caused the feelings I'd felt stir only a moment ago awaken and force me to become my true form.
Pain shredded through me like a constant burning stab of a blade slashing my skin mercilessly. My skin ripped away from my shoulder blades as my bones thickened and spread out in the open. Digging my nails into the skin of my elbows I held back the scream that burned in my throat. A sword appeared in front of me, it's blade black as night, the hilt of it's sword adorned with the same red ribbons as the angel woman's scythe but also had a thread of a necklace wrapped around the hilt with a cross dangling at the end. In the reflection of the dark blade I saw the black feathered wings that spread out around my pale and fear stricken face.
Who I was didn't matter to me anymore in that moment because I was to afraid of exactly what I was.
"Stop actin' out Rosie." Daimen said dully turning to face me his eyes glaring into me. "What am I?" I said in a small shaken voice. Daimen looked away from me. The man's scythe curved around my body and his own black wings engulfed me. Through the rough feathers that brushed back as the flames roared with greater power as Daimen stuck his hand out to the flames I saw him transform.
Black horns curled out of his head, his clothes caught fire and were replaced with a black tux with red cuffs, and mingling mix of red and black combat boots he turned to look back at me and winced as I saw his once transfixing, haunted, gorgeous blank and red eyes-at least that's how I remembered always seeing his eyes- had also caught flame. Blinking heavily he force the fire off his eyes and rested in his eyelashes but I wish they would have stayed; crimson red eyes stared at me blankly.
"Your dead Rosexana, we're both dead." he called out to me answering my question. His voice was gentle, caring, and trimmed with regret. He waved goodbye to me as he fell backwards into the flames. I looked away and closed my eyes tightly quivering as the truth hit me just like the flames of sin had a moment ago. I found the blade of the sword and weaved my fingers around it, squeezing hard hoping some kind of pain would take my mind off of everything. But I didn't feel anything no matter how hard I squeezed.
"All is well child," a voice called out to me I couldn't tell if it was inside of me or around me. Either way I didn't respond. Everything wasn't well.
I was dead…
My life was a blur of fuzzy memories I couldn't decode.
The only person or thing I remembered had just slipped away into the flames that I figured had to lead to Hell.
And I was left with a creepily sorrowful angel man, a voice that was a mysterious whisper I couldn't locate, a sword, and three things that repeated in my mind like a whirlwind of realization and confusion.
'I'm dead…What am I…I want Daimen back…!'
All was far from well.
But then again how well can things be when your own life is forgotten, and death has separated you from the only thing you know of or care for?
My hands slid down to the hilt of the sword and my fingers ran over the cross shaped charm. 'So this would be my Heaven…?' I thought remembering the name Daimen had called this place. Turning around on my knees I looked up at the man. "So, what are you?" I asked dully jabbing the blade into the black tiled floor and using it to drag myself up to my feet.
"I am the Angel of Death." he answered coldly his voice like a hard stone. I frowned up at him. His wings recoiled back to his side and he drew in her scythe so it was gripped in front of him threateningly. I looked over my shoulder the hall had closed up and the flames were gone…just like Daimen.
Feeling the cold metal of a blade against my neck my head snapped back to the dreary Angel of Death. "And you," his voice carried serious importance now and I feared what he had to say about me. "Are to be the next Angel of Death."
