The Social Register Kidnaping
Edward Spencer, CEO of Spencer Industries sat on the antique couch of his siting room crying like a baby. His darling wife Charlotte had been gone for a week now. How he missed her beautiful blue eyes, her smile, her laugh. It's all my fault. He thought. I let her go to the opening of that children's hospital in Harlem. It was where all those riots had been occurring. Charlotte loved children, but was never able have any. She had given money for the hospital, the Charlotte Spencer Hospital for Children. It was on her way back to the limousine that she had been kidnaped. Every day the kidnapers had called to ask for a larger ransom, every day the police called to say they had their best detectives on the case, every day the press wanted an interview. It was so agonizing.
Edward decided to listen to the business report on the radio. "There is still no word on the whereabouts of the wife of Edward Spencer, CEO of Spencer Industries.." He turned the radio off. The telephone rang. Edward answered it, hoping it would be the police.
"Mr. Spencer, we've found your wife."
"Oh thank God, detective! Did the scoundrel harm her?"
"Yes, I'm afraid she was badly harmed. We had to call Special Victims Unit. She's traumatized psychologically as well."
"Special Victims Unit?"
"I'm sorry to tell you this; your wife was, taken advantage of."
"Good Lord! Who was the scoundrel; Black Panther, hippy, Commie?"
"I don't know his political affiliations, sir. We've been looking for him for a while. There have been similar crimes."
"Where is she now?"
"Park Avenue Hospital. Someone will be at the front entrance to meet you."
"I'll be there as soon as I can!"
What Edward had heard had made him sick to his stomach, but she was alive! He called the chuffer who drove as fast as he could to get Edward to the hospital.
