(feigns sighing) Ah, outwitted again by Ashton! Go on Greg, let her have it. (Hands over photo, then pats her on the head lovingly)

She is quite lovely, I can see why Dad would fall so hard.

I can't. He's been gone for weeks at a time. How could he fall for her when he could be hanging out with this mug all day? (pointing to himself)

They Laugh

Brian

Sorry Greg, but I think anyone would pass.

Gregory

Oh? Like you're one to talk! I hear you asked Rose McAvoy to the Spring formal, yes?

Samantha

Brian

(Sighing unhappily) She said no...

Gregory

More like "Let me go vomit, then I'll come back with an answer!"

Lane

(Looking scornfully at the children) Hello... dears.

(Hopping down from Gregory's shoulder) Hello Melinda! We are so pleased we could meet you.

Melinda

...Charmed. Now John, you must introduce your children to me!

So,(Making a visible effort to keep a conversation going) how did you and our father meet?

Melinda

You're father got a little lost in the forest one night. Fortunately I was there looking for... inspiration for my designs. And there he was. It was love at first sight. (smiles at John) Although he did fail to mention that he had... seven... children

Ashton

Wait, he didn't tell you about us?

Skyla

Father?

John

Well children, I didn't want to scare this one away, eh? (Puts his arm around Melinda awkwardly)

Melinda

Oh no no... nothing could scare me away.

John

Lovely. Well children, if you could help move a few of Melinda's things into the Master bedroom, I'll start dinner.

The children depart

John

(Kisses Melinda on the cheek) Make yourself at home, I'll cook us a feast tonight. I can't wait for you to really get to know the kids, they'll love you. Trust me.

Melinda

Oh, I hope they do!

John leaves

Melinda Angrily begins to unpack, reflecting over a conversation with John in a mocking, frustrated tone.

Melinda

"What's your family life like John?"

"Well you know I lost my wife, Melinda"

"Yes, who do you live with?" I asked. "Do you have any pets?"

"Oh Yes! A dog! Loves to go swimming in the lake! Oh, you'll just love my dog Melinda!"

She breaks out of it.

Well, last time I checked, a dog means a dog, not seven children. Seven! How does one manage to just leave out the fact that they have seven children? Who in their right mind does that? I Hate children! I told him that! I told him I can't deal with children, that I didn't want children and I would never want children! They're a distraction I can't afford! It's like I can already feel the distance between us growing further and further! I'm going to lose him to those brats, I can just feel it."Sorry Melinda, the kids just need more attention! Sorry Melinda, but it's getting too serious for the kids! Sorry Melinda, they aren't over their mother yet. Sorry Sorry Sorry you're not worth it." That's how it always ends, every single time. But I can't let this happen again... The question is, how to stop it?

I mean, I could always...no, no, that's cruel. But wait... it could work. Yes, yes it would work! Let's see, (takes charms out of bag) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Perfect. Watch it! This could be the first time we get to spend some quality time with Melinda without Dad. He'll be home later tonight anyways. Just a quick drive, a quick meeting, then he's back home.

Come now! Come! I have a special surprise for you all!

Gregory

(Innocently to Melinda) Fantastic, You're leaving early! I'll go get your bags!

Ashton Smacks Gregory, Melinda smiles, clears her throat, and carries on as though she didn't hear anything

For each of you, I have hand made a special gift-

For each of you I have sewn a new shirt. They are made of 100 percent cotton and the threads come from India. I thought you all deserved something nice to wear based on what you wear now.

They each pull the shirt over them

(fumbling with the charm)

Oh Whatever Ashton, just throw it away. It's not like any of us are ever going to wear this.

(Mocking) Well why not August? The threads do come from India!

Ashton

Samantha! Come on guys, she isn't that bad! Just give her a chance. Maybe she just takes a while to warm up.

Samantha

It's been two weeks. I don't think she's getting any warmer.

Lane

Just yesterday I tried to get her to go on a hike with August and I, and she freaked about her shoes getting dirty.

Brian

Yeah! For lunch I made fish for her-

Really Brian? No wonder! She must have been scared by your cooking.

Brian

Shut up! I'm a great cook. Sometimes.

Lane

Anyway, I made her fish, and she said that the only seafood she ate was caviar.

Samantha

Ashton

Lights flash rapidly, Ashton runs away, Melinda exits
The lights stop blinking, we see Skyla, now in full swan form run across the stage

Lights up on John's home.

John sits on a chair, sad, oblivious to the world going on around him. He is only focused on one thing, which is his missing children.

Melinda enters, with two cups of tea

Melinda

John, you haven't moved since the authorities left.

John

Where could they be?

Melinda

Children often take part in promiscuous behavior. It's what they do. They go around and cause trouble for their parents! It's only natural, nothing to worry about!

John

Not them. Not my children. If they aren't here then something happened. They might be lost, or hurt…

Melinda

I tried to tell them that it was too dark to go on a walk through the forest. I told them something might happen, and they should stay home with me. I wanted to spend some time with them, you know. I wanted to get to know them better. After all, it might not be too long until I'm their mother. (flashes Smile, John doesn't respond) But they argued with me, insisted on going out even though it was night. They said that they did it all the time. Said that… you did it all the time.

John

Of course. This is my fault.

Melinda

Why John! How could you suggest such a thing?

John

Since their mother died… I've felt so alone. I'd try to lose myself in the forest instead of helping them grieve and guiding them through the most difficult part of their life. I never realized that I ran away from more than my sadness. I ran away from them. I just... I feel so guilty. How could I be so clueless? I just thought that ignoring the problem would make it go away... as if walking through the woods would clear my head. That's how we met, remember?

Melinda

Well of course I do. Sadly not all of us can be that lucky, to survive among the trees and wild animals...

John

They were probably missing her. My Alice. She's only been gone two years. She died too soon. She should've been there to see them really grow up. She should be here now. Ashton was so young... she was cheated out of a relationship with her mother. They all were, but especially Ashton. She had the least time to get to know the most… amazing woman. But then the car accident… my poor children.

Melinda

Oh, stop talking about them.

Realizing her mistake

I mean, it will only cause you to stress.

John

How can I not? You know I love you Melinda, but they are my only memories of Alice. And they are my children. My family.

Melinda

Of course I do. And I am happy I do, believe it. But I was happy with my family too, and I just don't think I can be happy without them here. Not while knowing that they're in danger. There are a lot of things in those woods.

Melinda

Well what happens if they aren't found?

John

Don't you dare say that. They will be found. They have to be.

Melinda

If you believe that, stand up! The police are doing all they can. There's no need to worry. We finally have time to ourselves... maybe this was a good thing. We can build a fire, drink tea and read by the flames-

John

No. Not now.

Melinda

Okay. Well, I'll step outside then. I think I'm going to take a walk myself.

(Aside) How is it that they aren't even here yet they continue to give me trouble?

John

What was that?

Melinda

Nothing, dear. I'm going to leave now. I'll be back soon.

John

Be safe. I don't want to lose anyone else tonight.

Melinda

I'll be safe. I promise. I love you.

Melinda receives no response, then with a disappointed sigh exits

Lights up on a forest scene

All the swan children are on the ground passed out. Skyla is in the centre and stirs awake

Skyla

What... Where...?

Skyla looks around to see her brothers and sisters on the ground unconscious and assumes the worst. She crawls to them and shakes them.

Oh my god!- you guys, you guys! wake up! Come on!

Lane stirs awake, Skyla is relieved

Lane

Skyla, what's wrong? What... What happened?

Skyla

I... I don't know! I can't remember anything!

The other children awaken

Gregory

(Trying to stand up) Woah...

Brian

What's going on?

Lane

Where are we?

Silence

August

I... I don't know.

Skyla tries to get up but falls down, shrieking in pain

Gregory

What? What is it?

Skyla

My legs... my arms... they hurt. They really hurt.

Samantha

So it's not just me? Because I feel like I just got run over by an armed tank.

August

Armed tank... That's redundant...

Samantha

Yeah well...

Skyla

Guys. Not the time or place.

Gregory

What happened to us?

August

I don't know. can't remember a single thing.

Lane

Me neither. It's all so cloudy... really blurry. (She closes her eyes tightly and puts her head in her hands) I don't know what's going on.

Brian

Okay. What's the last thing anyone can remember?

August

Something with Melinda?

Gregory

She... made us something. She made us... She made us... Nope. I'm pulling a blank.

Lane

Clothes. She made us shirts... I think?

Samantha

They had charms on them.

Skyla

Then Ashton's fell off.

Skyla realizes Ashton isn't with them

(Whispering) Ashton...

Brian

What did you say?

Skyla

Ashton! (already up on her feet. The others follow, getting up slowly) She isn't here? Where is she?

They panic and run around stage, calling for Ashton, but no answer

Gregory

It's no use! She isn't here!

Skyla

And what do you mean by it's no use? We need to find her!

Gregory

And how are we supposed to figure out where she is if we can't even figure out where we are?

Brian

She would never run away, that's out.

August

And we would never lose her. None of us would ever risk anything around her.

Skyla

Something is wrong. Something is really wrong. I have an incredibly bad feeling about all of this.

Melinda enters

Melinda

Perhaps I could be of assistance.

Samantha

Melinda? What are you doing here?

August

Are you here to help us?

Melinda

Oh Please. That's the last thing I would want to do.

Skyla

You... What have you done? Where is Ashton? Where is my baby sister! What did you-

Melinda

Quiet. You've already had a taste of what I can accomplish, don't make it worse for yourselves.

Skyla

What. Have. You. Done.

Melinda

I have proven a point.

Skyla

And what point would that be?

Melinda

Don't snarl at me you idiot girl. I'm the only one who can save you now. A little bit of kindness wouldn't hurt your case.

August

Save us? Save us from what, exactly?

Melinda

You all had a dream last night, didn't you? A dream that you were looking at earth from above. A dream that you were flying through the air. Then you got tired. Exhausted. And then you tumbled into the forest and into the ground.

Samantha

She's right.

Gregory

Melinda

You'll never bother me again! You'll never break the curse, and I'll have him forever.

Skyla

Curse?

Melinda

Tell me, honey, how do you think you got so sore? Why is it that your body aches, and every time you move you want to fall over in pain?

Skyla

What are you saying?

Melinda

I wanted you out of my life and I made it happen. Simple as that. To think that in one second you were problematic children, and the next, flying away as swans into the forest, away from me, away from my life!

Skyla

Swans?

Melinda

Oh, you aren't very bright are you? That was no dream. That was reality.

Samantha

Oh no...

Gregory

Samantha, don't believe her. There's no such things as curses, she's just trying to-

Samantha

No! I remember everything. We had the shirts. She yelled something out then instantly it turned into the dream... I was above the trees... in the air...

Skyla gets up and tries to lunge at Melinda

Skyla

What have you DONE!

Melinda holds up her hand, Skyla falls to the ground (a la magic)

Melinda

I guess you aren't heeding my advice on kindness. But it doesn't matter I suppose. You'll be stuck like this forever. Unless…

Brian

Unless what?

Melinda

Don't you get your hopes up Sweetheart. You aren't getting any help from anyone. Can you think of anyone that would stay silent six years for you? I can't. No would anyone shed a drop of blood for you, so as you can imagine no one will be knitting nettles to throw on your pathetic backs. You just aren't worth it. You have no one. Not me, not your father, and I don't see your mother rising from the grave anytime soon.

Lane

Our father would do anything for us!

Melinda

Yes, but he'll never know. No no, boys and girls, you are truly alone. And that how it's going to stay!

Fifteen minutes a day like this, then you will return to the curse, every day throughout the rest of your sad, worthless existence! And that's all there is to it. I get your father. I get the happy ending. I win!

Brian

Melinda

Melinda realizes that Ashton isn't there.

Melinda

What? Where is she? Where is that spoiled little-

The children back up towards the exit as Skyla speaks

Skyla

You don't win Melinda. You'll never win, because we will find her, we will break this spell and trust me when I say that we are NOT alone!

They run out, Melinda runs out the other way, hoping to find Ashton before them.

Lights up, forest. Ashton comes running on, out of breath.

Ashton

Gregory! Brian! Skyla! Please, please find me! Where are you? (pause)

Oh no, it's just no use! They aren't anywhere! What even happened? What did Melinda do to them? It was so dark... then I was just running and running. I was so scared. I felt that if I stopped I would die! Wait! What if she's chasing me? Or looking for me? What's going to happen to father? I can't go back there, I can't face Melinda. But where can I go? (Looks around) I've never been in the forest alone before. Gregory and Brian always warned me about it, but what else am I supposed to do? I'll have to stay here for now. It doesn't seem so bad. Maybe... just for one night I can rest here. I'm just... so... tired...

Ashton curls up and falls asleep

Lights dim to blue.

Brian

(Enters stage, looking for Ashton. Find her, kneels down and shakes her)

Ashton. You need to wake up. Ashton.

Ashton

Brian! You're alive? The others too, are they okay, where are they? Are any of you hurt, what happened-

Brian

They're safe but you need to listen. I can't stay long. Melinda... I know this sounds crazy, But we've been cursed. By Melinda.

Ashton

Are you sure you're okay? I mean, there was a lot of confusion, maybe you hit your head?

Brian

No, no you gotta believe me. Please! Why would I lie to you? It seems crazy, like some sort of fairy tale, but please believe me when I say this is real.

Ashton

What did she do?

Brian

She turned us into swans.

Ashton

Swans? Why?

Brian

She wanted to get rid of us.

Ashton

But- you aren't a swan right now...

Brian

We get a quarter of an hour every day to revisit our human forms. It's just enough time to remind us of what we once were, what we're missing. But at least it gave me the chance to come talk to you.

Ashton

But why would Melinda do that? She loves father-

Brian

But did she ever feel that way about us?

Silence from Ashton

Come on Ashton, you know it's true.

Ashton

And this whole time I was on her side...

Brian

Don't you go and blame yourself for this. This isn't your fault in any way.

Ashton

But still! There has to be a way I can help. Tell me what I can do!

Brian

That's why I'm here. A few of the others thought you were too young, that you may not be able to handle it. But you're our last hope.

Ashton

(Sighs) Six years of silence. Not a laugh or cry of pain. Not a whisper to anyone. Then, as if it wasn't painful enough, you would have to hand knit six blankets out of thorny nettles. On the day marking the sixth year, they need to be thrown on us to release the curse. It's a horrible prospect, but-

Ashton

How do you know all of this?

Brian

It doesn't matter. What matters is if you want to help us, and I'm not saying you have to-

Ashton

I'll do it.

Brian

Seriously Ash, think this over. This isn't just some small decision. We're talking six years of your life with nothing outside of this curse. You aren't going to be able to speak at all, not with us, not with anyone. And your hands... I mean they'll be bleeding all the time. One mistake and you have to start all over again, so it's hardly worth-

Ashton

Stop. Brian, just stop. If it saves you all then I can do it. Six years of being a swan for you, six years of silence for me. We've always stuck together. Through everything. Why should this be any different? And you can tell the others I said so too. That's my choice, and I'll start as soon as you leave.

Brian

You have no idea what it'll mean to them. What it means to me. You won't be alone through this, we'll meet you right here at the first of every week.

Ashton

Okay. Right here, in seven days I'll be here. Go, the others need you far more than I do.

Brian

Ashton

Brian

Because you're just like Mom. She'd be so proud of you.

I love you Brian. Tell the others that it was my decision, and I'm doing it whether they want me to or not. And tell them... tell them that I love them.

Six years of silence. Not a word, not a sound... I can do this. I have to, I'm the only chance they have. Six years starts today. It starts now.

All swan children on stage, sitting down or lounging against trees leisurely. Two of them are arguing.

Gregory

I'm telling you Brian. You shouldn't have even told her. All this anticipation and hope... for what? She's going to mess up somehow, I just know it!

Brian

Really? Is that all the faith you have in your sister?

Gregory

You know I love Ashton as much as anyone here, but can you look me in the eye and tell me honestly that you think she can handle it? I know I couldn't.

Samantha

Well she's done pretty great so far.

I agree. Five years and six months... it's a really long time.

Lane

Five and a half years of becoming a stupid swan every stupid day...

You know, I used to love swans. I'd spend hours in The summer just sitting on the porch and watching them swim around...

I know. I miss lying down by the lake, not having a care in the world.

Well we seem to have gotten over that pretty quickly.

Yeah, and she's the only one who can make it start all over. I can't handle another six years!

Skyla

Can you guys just stop fighting? We have fifteen minutes a day to be ourselves and you're wasting your time, and mine, by arguing.

Oh yes, because we should be singing and dancing and whistling right now.

Cut it out! Seriously, we are all so over your stupid melodramatic attitude. Believe it or not, it could be worse.

Lane

Okay, that might be taking the optimism a little too far.

No, hear me out. Yes, we have a curse on us. Yes, it's lasting us six years. But come on. We only have half a year left. And we're alive! Melinda could have just as easily killed us off. And we have Ashton. We all know she can pull through, even you Greg.

Brian

Skyla's right. Feeling hopeless and being hopeless aren't the Same thing.

Okay you guys, hush. Here she comes now.

Ashton enters. She looks older.

Brian

Hey Ash.

Each of them greet their sister solemnly and hug her

How are you holding in there?

Ashton smiles a half hearted smile and shrugs

Gregory

That's good enough.

Life in the forest is treating you well?

Ashton nods

Lane

Hey, are you hungry? We caught some fish down by the lake... that's one perk to being a bird I guess.

At this point Ashton sits down, and cries (without a sound!)

Skyla

Hey, hey. Don't cry. It's okay. We're all okay and this will be over soon. You know that right? (pauses) I know that every second of this can seem like a life sentence. But you know your perseverance is so strong, so steady. There's no reason to be sad. Put those tears away, you don't need to cry anymore. Because we love you. And no matter what, we will always love you.

Samantha

Everything will be okay. And we truly owe it all to you. You've done so great. You've been amazing. I don't think any one of us could do this but you.

Lane

Yeah, I mean look how far we've all come. I mean check this out. (Pulls out five shirts of nettles from her bag) Look at this! We're so close I can taste it, and It's all thanks to you .

Gregory

And... we all believe in you. I know I do.

Brian

Soon we'll be back to our normal lives.

Lane

It'll be perfect. The seven of us, all together and human. Stress and worry free!

Not to mention politics would be good, we would make a power family. It's not like we don't love each other. But I'm not sure it's the "in love." kind of feeling... you know? It's just confusing. And wow, I'm totally ranting to a stranger. I'm sorry, I hope you like the clothes. I have to go deal with Logan's wrath, we also plastered boy band posters on the walls.

Has she never heard the term "Gap Year?" And then don't get me started on my father... he just sits there reading the paper and goes along with whatever my mother says. He's got no mind of his own when it comes to me. I doubt he even cares.

Ashton walks to Logan and hugs him.

(Sighing)Sorry, I don't mean to lay all my problems on you.I just wish that things could be different.

Ashton nods in agreement

I'm sorry, it's late I know, but it couldn't really wait. There's something that needs to be said, and quite honestly I don't know how to say it. Or how you'll react.

Oh god! Oh god! Logan, look, she had a knife! She had the knife and was going to- oh lord, oh no! (Grabs Logan, yells to Ashton) Stay away from my son! Stay away! I'm calling the cops right now!

She hugs them all, while the courtroom stands in total shock
