I remember it being such a beautiful day outside. It was one of those rare days in Phoenix, Arizona where it wasn't insanely hot that the rubber in your shoes automatically melted to the cement just by walking outside. It was cool outside with a lovely breeze in the air and just a few clouds in the sky. It was…peaceful.
I was sitting inside a local Denny's restaurant waiting for someone special. I hated waiting for long periods of time and the boy in question whom I was waiting for knew how to push my buttons. There was a gift burning a hole in the bottom of my purse. My legs constantly bobbed up and down as a nervous tendency. I attempted to bite my nails but I had previously cut them down to avoid that nasty habit. It was one of my pet peeves. I couldn't stand people who chewed on their nails and hated the fact that I picked up such an awful trait. I began to play with my blond hair instead. It was a sufficient distraction.
My blue eyes drifted over to the table across from me. There was an older couple enjoying their lunch together. They were talking casually and occasionally one of them laughed. The man grabbed the woman's hand and just intertwined their fingers together then they smiled at one another. Denny's wasn't the most romantic of all places but the gesture was sweet. I smiled toward them and their relationship. I believed I had something that special; something that would last forever.
Around the restaurant were various other groups of people hanging out and enjoying their Saturday. I certainly loved the weekend. High school was definitely a drag for me and it was only my sophomore year. I had another two years before college would be calling my name. I sighed to myself as the thoughts of the future filled my mind. I would become a coffee junkie and there would be a lot of late night studying but I knew I was smart enough not to party especially when there was alcohol. I was a good kid…well for the most part.
I sighed aloud as I thought again of the gift in my purse. I didn't exactly gain it honorably or honestly. I didn't steal it but did kind of take the money from my parents to buy it. It was without their knowledge but they didn't give two cents about me or what I did. As long as the police weren't involved and their names weren't mentioned negatively to the public, I could get away with just about anything. My brother had the same unspoken rules and as a result we hardly ever saw each other. I wasn't even sure if we went to the same high school. He was only a year older yet chose to ditch class probably every day or maybe not. I wasn't sure. We weren't close.
The door opened in the restaurant and my dark blue eyes swiveled to inspect who it was.
A tall dark haired boy with piercing green eyes strolled in. His gaze surveyed the restaurant as if he was looking for someone. He had on black jeans with a bright blue football jacket from our school. His hair was swept over to the side in a very attractive way. It was Zachary Ackins and he was arguably one of the most well-known boys in my grade. He was here…looking for me.
I grinned and waved like a maniac eager to get his attention. His eyes lit up in recognition as he walked over and joined me at my table.
"Hey babe," he greeted carelessly. He was always so laid back about everything which made him seem so mysterious which was yet another attractive feature.
"Hi," I said back resisting the urge to giggle like an idiot. I felt myself perk up and give off a sort of glow. I didn't know what it was about this boy but whenever he was around I felt…wonderful. It was like I could fly with all the emotion swelling up inside me. My friends had told me that I was in love I was too young to know what love was.
"Have you ordered yet? I'm starving."
I passed over my menu. "I didn't order but I'm not very hungry."
Zach didn't even glance my way as he took the laminated paper. I watched him for a minute wondering how I had gotten so lucky. It had been exactly six months since we had started dating but we had known each other since the beginning of freshman year. Our relationship was pretty famous around our grade and our group of friends. We weren't crazy about our PDA but occasional hand holding and small pecks were given. We didn't do anything too crazy in private either. The furthest we had gone was making out and there had been no attempts to go further thankfully. We were more like friends who kissed in their spare time. Still, it was the perfect way to function a relationship in my opinion. Didn't everyone want to be married to their best friend?
I sighed toward him as a waitress made her way over to us.
"I see the rest of your party has arrived. Are you ready to order?"
I glanced over at Zach who shined a big smile to our waitress. "Just a coke and maybe some cheese fries to start please? We won't be here long."
"Sure sweetie. Anything for you, hun?" She turned and I just shook my head. After she nodded and left I faced Zach again.
"We're not staying long? Where are we going?" I asked.
Zach smirked over at me as the waitress came back with the coke then excused herself. "You'll find out soon enough, babe."
The butterflies that I refused to acknowledge fluttered a bit in my stomach from excitement.
"It's our six month anniversary," I announced suddenly. Zach didn't seem the least bit impressed with my little proclamation. "Are you doing something special for me?"
Zach just glanced down at his soda before shrugging. "I can tell you that it will be a surprise."
"Me first!" I shouted grabbing the little box from my purse. It was a black velvet box and I bounced in my seat with excitement as while handing it over to Zach.
"Your parents actually give you the money?" he asked before looking at what it was. Zach was one of the few people that knew of my parental situation. Even some of my best girl friends didn't know. I wasn't a fan of boasting that I could do what I wanted because no one cared.
"Of course not, but does it matter? I think you'll like it!"
Zach shrugged unaffected by my obvious excitement over the whole situation. He didn't understand how much I enjoyed giving gifts. I just really wanted to gauge his reaction.
He slowly opened the case as if just to keep me in suspense. He was pleasantly annoying like that. Then when he spotted the present within, his whole face lit up.
"Whoa Charlotte," he mumbled in astonishment. "I can't take this."
"Yes, you can," I argued easily. "You said you wanted one right?"
"Char, these are so expensive."
Inside the box was a silver Rolex watch. It was a replica of one that Zach's father had. He mentioned numerous times how much he admired it. He wore it to school once with so much pride I thought his head might swell up the size of a watermelon. I knew exactly what to get him for our anniversary.
I showed how little I cared in my expression. "My parents have a million times the amount that was. That is just a shiny penny on the road to them. I'm seriously not concerned about it."
"I really can't take it."
I furrowed my eyebrows and crossed my arms over my best. I was about to reply when the waitress came over and set down Zach's appetizer.
"Anything else for you two?"
Zach looked over at me. "Go ahead, babe, I'll pay for this."
I just shook my head. "No I'm fine."
Zach nodded once toward me and the waitress disappeared from our table.
"Why can't you take the gift Zach?"
Zach's mouth was already stuffed to the brim. That was one unattractive trait of his that I could have easily done without. Yet I knew that you took the bad with the good.
"I just can't," he mumbled through a mouth full of food.
I cringed at him before I frowned. "You don't like it?"
"No, no, it's not that it's just…I can't."
"I don't understand," I complained throwing my hands in the air from frustration. "You can't what?"
Zach paused a moment to clear his mouth. He even used his napkin to wipe an access food off of his face. That struck me as odd immediately. He would never do such a thing in normal circumstances.
"You know why I asked you to meet me here today?" he began slowly.
I didn't like how serious his tone had become. "To celebrate our anniversary?"
Zach shook his head and my heart fell into my stomach.
"I asked you here because we need to talk." My eyes widened in horror. I had a horrible gut feeling that I knew what was coming. What girl didn't after hearing those words? "These past few months with you have been…really good and all. Honestly though, I didn't even know today was our anniversary. I really love hanging out with you Charlotte but I just don't see us going anywhere. I mean honestly, can you see us having a future together?"
My lip quivered slightly as my eyes drifted back over to the couple holding hands. My answer immediately then: yes; yes I could see us being like that. We may not have been the most perfect match in the world but we were great together. I could see us getting married, having kids, and living out our lives together. Why couldn't he?
"What happened?" I asked quietly. I knew my voice would shake otherwise.
"Now don't make a scene," Zach warned like the jerk he was turning out to be. "I brought you here so you don't embarrass yourself. There's nothing wrong and nothing happened but don't you see? That's just it. Nothing's happening between us!"
I sighed looking down into my lap. The watch still lied in its box on the table. I didn't even want to look at it anymore.
"I thought that's what you wanted?" I replied lamely.
"Of course not," Zach replied. "It's fine though. I mean, we can still be friends and all right? I just think that would be better for us. It's basically all we are now."
I nodded a bit but felt ill all of a sudden.
"Take the watch Zach," I told him as I collected my things. "It's just going in the trash otherwise. I guess just like our relationship."
I began to stand when Zach grabbed my arm to stop me. "Look Char, I want to be friends still."
I just shook my head feeling tears finally prick the back of my eyes. "Shove the bull back where it belongs." I yanked out of his grip and began to exit the restaurant. The waitress saw me on the way out and told me to have a good day.
I stopped by the push door and turned back toward my table. Zach was putting on the stupid watch and I felt a tear roll down my cheek. He was so mature about all of this.
"In a Denny's?" I shouted toward him. He glanced up at me surprised. "Classy."
I gave him one last glare before exiting through the doors. Zach would have some of his football buddies pick him up and they would high five about his newfound single-ism and then they would go out to celebrate. Guys were such jerks!
I pulled out my phone and dialed my home phone number. My mother's assistant answered the phone and I quickly explained that I needed to be picked up. I couldn't wait to reach the age where I could drive myself around.
I walked over to the sidewalk furthest away from the main door and sat down on the curb. An older girl was smoking a cigarette outside with a black jacket halfway covering up her Denny's employee t-shirt. She glanced at me with minimal interest but I ignored her completely.
My tears began to fall freely down my cheeks as my situation finally dawned on me. I was…single. I had just been broken up with. The whole situation felt surreal and yet my chest felt empty. I felt empty.
"He was lying to you, you know?"
I turned around just as the Denny's worker put out her cigarette. I raised an eyebrow in response while wiping away the evidence of my tears.
"He's been cheating. Sneaking around with some soon-to-be-cougar senior girl."
I glared over at this chick. What right did she have to tell me about my relationship?
"How do you know that?"
She shrugged as she came and joined me on the curb. "We've been studying him. He was on our list."
"Your list?" I asked incredulously.
She nodded seriously. "Yes, our player list. He was only a freshmen when he entered the system so he wasn't a threat but now I see that we may have a real problem on our hands. You go to Jackson High right?"
I stared at her and wondered if she was speaking English. "I'm afraid that I'm not following."
The girl nodded as if expecting that much. "Did he break your heart?"
I faced the street again unsure of how to answer her. I did feel a pain in my chest but was it really from a broken heart?
"Let me rephrase the question," the Denny's worker commented when I hesitated. "Do you want to break his heart?"
To say I was shocked would be an understatement. "Of course not! Why would I want to hurt him?"
"For hurting you," she replied easily.
I sighed feeling my confidence drain with my next sentence. "I can get over it."
The girl pursed her lips and nodded. "I see. Well then don't do it for you, do it for all the other girls out there."
"Do what?"
"Just think that if he isn't taught a lesson now, he's just going to keep on breaking the hearts of other girls. You know how you feel now? Maybe it isn't heartbreak or maybe it is but does another innocent girl deserve to feel like you do?"
I frowned at her. Who was this girl and what on Earth was she going on about?
"What could I possibly do?"
"Join my organization," she answered simply. "We're a group of girls aimed to teach a lesson to all those boys out there that need one."
"That's kind of harsh…"
"No! It's a necessity. We're maturing these boys for the future. We are making them husband material you might as well say. What we are doing is...a service.
"Is that legal?" I asked skeptically.
She waved her hand as if to dismiss the idea. "Don't worry about that. You wouldn't need to concern yourself with such things. What do you say though? Do you want to teach a lesson to the infamous Zachary Ackins?"
I opened my mouth to reply when a silver Ford pulled up in front of the Denny's. I stood up and collected my bag before heading over to my ride. I turned back toward the employee.
"I don't like it," I told her. "I don't want to do it."
She stood up as well and dug out something from her pocket. It took her about two minutes to find something suitable to write with then she asked me for a pen. I gave her one and she quickly scribbled something down. Then she handed it over to me.
"That's in case you change your mind. This is where we meet every week and the password changes so either be there or miss out. I go to school with you. I've seen you around with that douche back there. You're a sophomore right?" I nodded. "I'm just a year ahead of you. I'm Diana by the way," she introduced shortly.
"Charlotte Clemons," I replied shortly.
Diana frowned. "Charlotte? Huh, I don't like that. I'm going to call you Charlie for short."
I gave her an odd look. No one had ever given me a nickname before. It felt kind of nice as if I would be welcomed to be her friend. I glanced down at the paper in my hand. "Um, okay?"
Diana gave me a curt nod then turned to go back into the restaurant behind her. "I hope to see you next week Charlie. I think you'll be a great addition to our team."
Then she disappeared and I was left alone with my ride. I looked down at the piece of paper in my hands again and sighed. Maybe I could check out this thing and see what it was about. It's not as if I could really be into such a thing anyway.
Alright, so I didn't update this weekend at all but it is May! And I promised a brand new story for May. So any update is better than none at all right?
I'm still working on Cupid Collections. I'm just going to be doing both stories.
I hope you guys enjoy this so far and what is to come! Next update will probably be this weekend if I can manage it.
Thanks for reading! Reviews are welcome but never necessary!
