Ethan Muir woke up on Thursday the 18th of June, looked at his clock, and proceeded to freak out. It was 7:03 in the morning, and if he didn't get out of the house in four minutes, he would be late to first period, therefore landing him in detention on the last day of school. He threw on a shirt and a pair of shorts, unsure if they were clean or not, grabbed his book bag, slipped on some shoes and left for school. He could see Kamika a little ways down the road and yelled to her as he secured his backpack onto his shoulders.
"Kamika! Hey wait up! Good morning!"
Kamika wasn't surprised that he was late today of all days. She waved his way and continued walking the mile towards school. She knew that he would run to catch up to her, and in five minutes he was at her side.
"Late again, Ethan? Oh gosh…is that shirt clean?" Kamika sometime questioned the standards that Ethan set for himself. Ethan shrugged and they walked to school in silence.
The second bell rang just as Ethan walked into his first period class, Biology. He thanked God it was his last day as he took his normal seat next to the sole window. The people that designed the school had purposely put almost no windows in any given classroom because they were all afraid what the students would do with glass. Ethan and Kamika had discussed this subject on many occasions and had come to the conclusion that the designers were vampires. Mr. Brooks took his feet off his cluttered desk, sighed, and slowly made his way to the chalkboard. The class could tell with the way he kept his room dark and wore sunglasses that he was hungover. Not a surprising sight actually; all the teachers went out for a 'teacher appreciation dinner' the night before the last day of school. But we all know what really happens at those dinners. One event leads to another…add a few drinks, and you got yourself a show. In any event, Mr. Brooks began to drone on about something or other dealing with physics. All graduates are required to take physics one year or another and everyone always takes it senior year, because who really wants to deal with that stuff? Ethan started to doze off and when he woke up he found himself alone in the bio class with Mr. Brooks. Mr. Brooks was sitting at his desk with his feet up. Ethan began to apologize when he realized that Mr. Brooks was asleep, you just couldn't tell because he was wearing sunglasses. Ethan snuck out of the room and made his way to second period.
Second period for both Ethan and Kamiko was English with Mrs. Litsy. It's a good thing that Mrs. Litsy is practically death and blind as a bat, or else Ethan would've certainly got a detention for being a whole fifteen minutes late for class. Second period flew by, and Ethan and Kamika eventually found themselves in the lunch line. It was grilled cheese day. They both took their sandwich, paid, and made their way over to their regular seat in the corner of the lunch room. Anastasia used to sit with them, but since she broke up with Ethan, they were no longer on speaking terms.
"Half way done, eh Ethan?" Kamika loved school, but despertally wanted summer.
"I'll be lucky if I make it out without a detention today" replied Ethan.
Kamika smiled at her friend and they parted to go to third period.
The rest of the school day was a blur. Ethan met Kamika at her locker for the last time this year and they began the walk home. They were halfway home when a bunch of jocks (Ethan's friends) showed up in a Chevy and asked if Ethan wanted to go out for a drink. They all knew that Ethan was two years below the drinking age, but that didn't stop them. He was on the varsity baseball team, so that gave him a free ticket for just about anything. Drugs, alcohol, you name it. Just have Ethan mention that he's on the baseball team and boom, cops forget all about it. Ethan looked at Kamika, speaking to her without words, are you going to be okay the rest of the way home? She smiled and nodded, and he hopped into the back of the truck and made his way to the bar.
Kamika knew it was wrong for Ethan to drink, but he did it all the time, so that allowed it to be acceptable, right? He was the only one that was underage on the baseball team, so it's not like the whole team was doing illegal stuff. No, it was just Ethan. And he knew how to take care of himself at the bars. If he got too drunk he would call Kamika and she would pick him up and drive him home. She didn't exactly *enjoy* doing such things, but it was better than the alternative. The absolute last thing Kamika wanted was to read the paper one day and see "VARSITY BASEBALL PLAYER ETHAN MUIR KILLED WHILE DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE" plastered all over the front page. Her eyes started to tear up just at the thought of it. Ethan had been her best friend forever, and she couldn't begin to imagine what life would be like without him. Her life would have no meaning…he was her everything. Of course he hadn't realized this, or so Kamika thought. She always had a feeling that he felt the same things that she did, but then he went and made those stupid mistakes, like Anastasia. She cringed at the sound of her name. That girl had changed him, and not necessarily for the better.
It was 9:00 when Ethan called. Kamika could tell that something was wrong. First, 9:00 was way too early to be calling Kamika on a night when he went to the bar. She usually received those calls around two in the morning. Second, when she answered, he sounded much more than drunk.
"Hefffoooo? Kamiiiaka! Hehehehe I'm so funnnayy. Brad don't do that fo me."
Fear pulsed through Kamika's vains. What had those idiots done to him? He was on the other end of the line laughing his head off in a way that Kamika had never experienced, and there were many others, she guessed around seven, laughing with him. She was legitimately frightened for his health.
"Ethan? Is that you? Can you tell me where you are?"
"Me is at Hoolaganananananas. Jessie do that again that make me feel funny!"
"Okay Ethan I'm going to come and get you, okay?"
Kamika hung up the phone and raced downstairs to get her keys. As she started the car and backed out of the driveway, all she could think of was the blood curdling scream that she had heard just before hanging up.
