"Phone for you!"

"Sonuvabitch." Why did people insist on calling me on my day off? Why couldn't people just leave me alone? Marching over to the phone I had every intention of shouting this into the receiver. Except the moment I demanded, "What the fuck do you want?" the blood drained from my face.

"Eli," Nancy, sounding scared. Why was she scared? "Eli, please. I need you to pick me up."

I wanted to say yes immediately, but slowed myself. "Why? What's up?"

"I was on a date, and it… it didn't go well. Eli, please. I'm stranded."

"Where?"

"North end."

Oh. That was bad. "Deep north?"

"Yeah."

A beautiful woman, dressed for a date, probably in heels with an expensive purse, in the worst neighborhood in town. "I'll be right there."
