Highway Called Life
Like a kid with his learner's permit
Too afraid to put your foot on the pedal
To merge into the same lane
To disappear with the crowd
Everyone else's movin' a pace too fast
You're swept up in the traffic
Can't take a good look at the rearview mirror
And run headlong into life
You wanna switch lanes but you hesitate
It's too scary to take the plunge
'Cause you don't know if you're reading the map right
And can't find the right exit
Highway made of concrete
When you fall, you fall hard
'Cause everything's black and white
You're weaving back and forth
Unsure which street to take
People are honking behind you
Yelling at you to make up your mind
Can't look straight 'cause the traffic lights are dazzling
Can't look back 'cause the headlights are too bright
You shift your gaze but there are streetlights
And then the blinking of pedestrian lights
You're going blind 'cause you don't know what to look at
It's too complicated for you to comprehend
Why the world needs all this to function
Highway made of concrete
When you fall, you fall hard
'Cause everything's black and white
Colours fly by in a blur
It feels like you're the only one
Seeing how fast they drive
And catching all the unseen scenery
Too unused to the rush hour
But when you finally gotta stop for gas
Catch your breath and look at the world
You see the progress you've made
The tracks you've left behind
You think to yourself
It's not worth it to quit now
And decide to keep going
'Cause even if you're reading the map wrong
There's always room for a U-turn
To get back on the highway
And find the right exit for you
Highway made of concrete
When you fall, you fall hard
'Cause everything's black and white
But there's a full spectrum in between
Once you find the colours, they're easy to recognize
All you gotta do is look over your shoulder
And acknowledge that your past is still there
Highway made of concrete
When you fall, you fall hard
But this time there are other colours
To cushion your landing
Highway made of concrete
When you fall, you still fall hard
And this time you know
How to get up on your own
Comfortable with accelerating
Knowing when to press the brakes
Not afraid to make a wrong turn
You've got the hang of driving
Finally
On the highway called life
