For hours, the only sound in the house would be typing on a keyboard. Of course, I didn't hear much of that, since I had my earphones on and had cranked my music up to the near max. So I didn't usually hear when my girlfriend Ani would come home. She'd usually come up behind me while I was working and wrap her arms around my neck, and then kiss my cheek to let me know when she'd arrived.
Today wasn't any different.
Ani did what she usually did then gently pulled back one of the 'phones from one of my ears. "Hey babe. How's it coming?"
I grinned. "It's practically done. Now I just need to run it properly, instead of all the bug-runs I've been doing."
"That's great!" Ani kissed my cheek again. "God, you're brilliant! An entire video game in six years, all by yourself!"
I chuckled and pulled my headphones down onto my neck, and then spun my chair around to meet her. "Six years of my life brutally wasted," I joked, quickly kissing her lips. "I could've spent it doing something more… productive."
She laughed. "Well, sorry 'bout that, but I have some studying to do. Big test coming up in a few weeks, and you know that Chem is my worst class."
I pretended to be disappointed and frowned. "Oh, okay then. I'll just go back to wasting my life with video games."
"Nate…" Ani kissed my lips and put her forehead against mine. "Just hold on. As soon as I graduate, we can get productive."
I chuckled. "Y'know, I wasn't really upset."
"Oh, I know. I just can't stand it when you're not smiling."
It's cheesy lines like that that make me remember why I'm in love with Ani. She's supported me through everything, and she's the only person I can ever really talk to.
I've been working on this game for a while. It's taken a lot of my time up. I met Ani when I'd just started it. She was interesting, to say the least, and helped give me a lot of my ideas.
Now, if only I could've thought up a title…
"So, what d'you wanna eat?" she asked as she left my workroom. "I actually had some time to go out and buy groceries. You wouldn't believe the line-up, though…"
I grinned and stood up, following her into the kitchen. "How 'bout one order of sexy?"
I heard her laugh as I entered. "Well, I did buy bacon…"
"Sounds great!" I helped her put away some of the groceries before I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her close. "I can't wait until it gets published, y'know…"
I smiled. "Hey, how 'bout you run it first?"
She turned around in my arms until she was facing me. "Seriously? But it's yours—."
"And I'd be happy if you were the first person to try it out." I rested my forehead against hers again. "Please?"
After a few seconds, she nodded. "Okay. But if any of those weirdo symbols that you incorporated into your game do something to me, I'll kill you."
I chuckled. "Just because I found them in a dusty old book doesn't mean that they're bad. You're so superstitious, Ani."
"Not superstitious; cautious." Ani wrapped her arms around my neck and leaned back so that my own arms supported her. "My grandmother taught me never to screw with anything you weren't sure of. Magics especially."
I laughed. "Ani, this isn't a fantasy. We don't live in one. The game is, so those symbols were perfect. And anyway, magic doesn't exist."
She shrugged. "Well, just remember—."
"Yeah, yeah; it'll be my head on a silver platter." I kissed her and then let her go. "Lemme know when you wanna try it out."
Ani nodded and smiled. "Will do, Nate."
It didn't take long; about an hour after we had some breakfast for supper, Ani came into my workroom as I was running the final tests. I moved out of my chair and let her sit in it, then gave her the headphones.
"I don't wanna spend time explaining everything to you and why some of the things are the way they are," I explained when she looked at me curiously. "I want you to fully incorporate yourself into this. I don't wanna be a backseat driver."
She smiled and slipped the 'phones on. "Silver platter, remember?"
"Got it babe." I kissed her cheek and left the room, closing the door quietly behind me.
For hours, the only sound in the house would be typing on a keyboard. But now, I've given the reigns to my girlfriend.
Little did I know just how much that'd bite me in the ass later on.
