A Letter to My Generation

Dear Generation:

This is for the nurtured, lazy, and immobile people they are calling generation Y. For us, there is no revolt, no questioning, no protest, and no action. We live in the safe confines of the bubbles our parents created for us. Hidden from tragedy, we live our lives thinking everything is going well. Our parent's tell us we can do anything and as a result we do nothing. Our lives lack the basic depressive realizations that make up actual reality. We do whatever we can to not leave our bubbles, so that we can keep thinking everything is ok and that we can still do anything. We are so afraid of failure and conflict that we choose to act as if the unknown is non-existent. Our isolation from reality has become a form of conformity. We must confront all the bullshit in the world if we have any hope. We make no impact on politics and are in turn hidden from the terrible truths that make up modern day America. We have become consumed by our selfish desires to the point of ignorance. We know nothing and think we know everything. Our views of the world are limited to our own schemata's and out of fear, we refuse to contemplate any new ideas. We are living in a fantasy of how we think the world should be. This is all reflected in the art of our generation. Popular music's decline in substance parallels the severing of our generation's connection to how we feel. The individual is a lost ideal, broken down by our carless inability to exercise our freedoms. What will we do? Is it too late for us to conquer the ills of our time? Can we regain our drive and say something worth value? Can we make our impact on history and change the world for the better? I do not know the answer to my questions, but I do know that if we do not burst from the parental safe heavens we reside in, we will fast become an irrelevant and easily controlled generation. We must protest, ask questions, and most of all never do anything in fear of losing stability or comfort. We must act according to our gut feelings and never repress our desires. If we don't live for something, we will parish as nothing.
