"breathing in ragged gasps, heart thumping like an animal's in failed attempts at composure." An old piece that, unfortunately, became relevant again, so I revived it.

Her voice trembled like a thief whose crime
has been discovered and she cracked
like the spine of a book,
breathing in ragged gasps,
heart thumping like an animal's
in failed attempts at composure.
A smile tugged at my lips
as they pressed against hers
and I closed my eyes, though
in retrospect, I wish I hadn't
missed her expression,
surely as fearful as the stuttered
whispers afterwards, her fingers
where they shuddered on my jawline.
