there's an oppressive silence around us
your hand clasps mine and brings me back.

elevators shift, doors swing open, slam shut.

the cigarette burns too quickly, scalding my fingers
i curse and drop it, but wholly enjoy the moment.

shuffling feet nearby, cellphones chirping alerts.

i wish i could carve a notch into this bench
press myself into it and hide from the world.

tires squealing, cursing yelled from frosted windows.

your eyes are intent, pleading for answers.
i hastily look away, unable to tell you how i adore you.

your purse rattles when you pick it up and leave.
