We Live In A Wasteland Day 11- morningClimbing mountains of trash has become a sort of game between us. You see, Aria will create a large garbage mountain, not caring about how filthy it was or how dirty he got from touching it, he would still mold a mountain big enough to be the perfect mountain slide. Then he would go pull out a broken car door from our secret place, then drag it all the way up to the top of the mountain. then we would both sit on the door and slide down to mountain like a sled ride.
That was one of our many games; from hide and seek, to king of the mountain and we would pretend to be treasure hunters. Since we lived in a dump the size of a country, we had lots of playing space so the games would never really get boring. But we would sure as hell smell like a dead body, which were among the trash time to time, but since we don't have any home and the government doesn't give out shelters to the homeless orphans, we just let ourselves stink. Though the smell of us practically was unbearable, plus always itching was unbearable too, I miss being clean.
Aria waves me over to his side "Come on, lets go play somewhere else, not a lot to make another pile, but we can go play bandits!"
I smile, silently nodding. Aria takes my hand into his, then leads me somewhere else to go play. It's always like this, me and Aria along with our games.
Day 11 - afternoonSo me and Aria travel through our territory, pretending to be bandits hiding our treasure (A broken Ipad and a few fake toy gold coins.) Me and Aria are digging through the dirty ground to make a ditch to place our treasure in.
Aria flicks his hand to the south "Go scout the area for those damn policeman."
I give him a solider salute then march towards the south, I hold my tin foil sword, specially made by Aria, to my check. You never know when a damn copper would pop up, holding a rifle in his hands ready to blast off your head. My eyes dart around, even though this is a game, something don't feel quiet right today. I feel like I'm really being watched. I don't know if I'm just being chicken, or if I really am being watched.
I hear shuffling in the trash, it don't sound like a rat, to big to be a rat "Aria, is that you?"
There's more movement, they become foot steps, lots of footsteps. I panic, that ain't Aria, that's no rat either, don't know what it is either, but I'm not that curious to find out. I run back to Aria dropping my sword, he's just about done patting the dirt to make it look like no one buried anything there.
He looks up at me, brows furrowed "Monte you see coppers out there?"
I keep running, sweat beading down my forehead "Somethings out there, no game!"
Aria eyes go wide, he knows the things that are out there, things that would mess us up if we were to ever let it happen. Truth it, Orphan children are suppose to be taken to a facility, I don't know what happens there only know that its really bad, especially when your young. I'm fifteen years old, abandon on the streets when I was a five, so I should of already been to the facility. Aria, whose eighteen now, use to have a brother name Todd who was told him all about the facility and why he should avoid getting sent there. Two years later, Todd disappeared.
Both me and Aria are still eligible to be submitted into the facility, so if we got caught now we would go straight there. I don't know what happens in the facility, but Aria does and he's afraid of it. I trust Aria, I've known him most of my life. I've never seen him more afraid of anything, except the facility. So if he says we avoid it, I'm sure as hell going to avoid it.
We run for about a hour from an enemy I never even saw, just heard. I'm slightly curious to why we always have to run from things like mice. I want to know why we have to run away all the time. I hate all the moving around, but I don't dare stop.
Another hour goes by, I'm tried, I want to stop. Aria still runs though, so I still run with him. I'm slowing down, my breaths becoming shallow each second that pasts. My heart is ready to burst any second, I think Aria finally realizes that because he lets us stop for a brief second to rest up. I plop down on the ground, wiping my sweaty forehead with the dirty shirt sleeve.
Aria climbs up a little garbage mound, he takes out a old telescope he found and fixed up some years back. Aria presses the extend button, it stretches out and he looks from where we came, he brings the telescope down from his face and says to me "Not safe here anymore, Monte."
He deactivates the telescope and places it in his bag. He starts mumbling thousand of cuss words, which surprises me since Aria never curses. He's the type of person who'd shove a bar of soup into your mouth the moment a cuss word left your mouth. Aria climbed down the pile, then locked me in the eyes.
There was something in his stare that worried me, he looked kind of sad and a bit of something else I didn't really understand. Tears started forming in his eyes, I gasped because this was another strange thing for Aria to do. He never cried, never ever cried.
"W-whats wrong?"
He looks at his feet "There's a whole lot of them coming for us, but I won't let them take you Monte."
"Who, what, what are you talking about, whose coming after us, Aria?"
Aria looks past me staying completely silent "I can't tell you because I don't know, but I do know is that if they catch us they something bad will happen."
He takes off his traveling bag, he carries it everywhere; the bag held the telescope, canteen, a bag of unused matches, a blanket, and this weird gold locket that he never opened up. He shoves the bag at me "Take this and run as fast as you can, you can't go to the city, because you don't have a passport, but if you go south theirs a forest."
What, leave? wait was he not going to leave with me, was he going to let himself get captured by who ever this enemy was. I wanted him to tell me just that, but he already guessed what I thought before I said anything and his answer doesn't really surprise me at all. Reason why he refuses to come with me is because he's going to go to the facility and find Todd.
He shoves the bag into my hands one more time "Go now Monte, before they find us!" he hisses.
I'm reluctant to leave him, but I know that I have to go, I know Aria will out smart the damn facility. He can do anything. I look into his eyes one last time, I hug him for the last time til I met him again. I took off towards the south, where i'll find the forest.
I know Aria says I'll be safe there, but how can I be safe in a environment I don't know how to survive in?
Day 11 - Night
I made it to the forest, it ain't much but a hidden land from the eyes of the city and the facility. I took shelter in a cave, I'm hoping a Tibak, a mixture of a tiger and cave bear, doesn't live here. Laying the blanket out on the floor I lay on it, curling up into ball on the floor. I'm so scared, I don't know when I'll ever see Aria again, I don't even know how to find food, water or anything. Winter is approaching soon to, so I won't make it for more then three weeks maybe. I'll either die from starvation or cold.
I don't know what to do, but I won't cry like a babe about it though. I think for a second, I have faith Aria will come find me. I have faith he'll find Todd to and we'll be a happy family again. with the hopeful dreams, I finally fall asleep, my belly empty since I've haven't had anything to eat since morning.
My belly growls, but I ignore it and drift off into a dream. I think of Aria, Todd and I think of us living like kings in a far away kingdom, just for people like us. It would be good if we could actually live in a world like that. A kid can dream, can't he?
