Cabinet Minister's Children
In an underground facility of the Secret Army that helps nations in distress, Arik Sharon and Robert Lindsay feasted on some fresh imitation of McDonaldian's food, gnawing with their teeth as some skinny cleaners ushered empty plates around them.
"The Council of American Islamic Relations may tout itself as an 'organization that challenges stereotypes of Islam and Muslims', and as group that was formed 'to challenge anti-Muslim discrimination nationwide'." Robert made a slow nod at Arik wondering what made him say that. "But in fighting the good fight against hate …", Arik noticed some new arrivals that looked pale and ashen in their putrid faces, "… at least one of its regional leaders demonizes Jews as the source of Muslims' problems."
"Really?" Robert chewed some more, wondering why the taste was better than in Washington, D.C.
"Did you know that CAIR-Michigan Executive Director Dawudra Walidahran asked on May the 25th sermon at the Islamic Organization of North America mosque in Warren, Michigan …" Arik suddenly paused as if he just saw a monster. Robert turned around and noticed a fat Jew. He almost giggled aloud, but restrained.
"'They are the Jews, they are the Jews', he answered himself in Arabic." Arik continued to eat and Robert wondered why Arik paused in such a horrific way.
"Well … I don't think that …" Arik did not wait for him and continued as if in some kind of a rush.
"Aside from being one of CAIR's most visible spokesmen, Walidahran appeared frequently in the media and has traveled abroad at least twice on trips paid by the State Department."
"No kiddin'?" Robert wasn't sure as to how to approach Arik's topic.
"Yes!" Arik's eyes flashed for a moment. "During a 2010 trip to Mali, for example, he criticized treatment of Muslim Americans after 9/11, saying they 'have been subjected to increased discrimination from racial and religious profiling by law enforcement'." Someone greeted them and Robert noticed it was a woman. A scarce sight in otherwise gloomy underground facilities. "And he cast the 2009 shooting death of a Detroit imam as unjust, even though the imam refused orders to lay down his weapon and surrender, and then opened fire first after a police dog was sent in to subdue him."
They slurped on their milk-shakes that tasted artificial.
"If it isn't the Jews incurring Allah's wrath by disobeying him, the hands of the pro-Israel lobby are undermining American Muslims and Palestinians alike, Walidahran claimed in his sermon." Robert made another nod at Arik. "In fact …", Arik detached his mouth from plastic straw, "One of the greatest social ills facing American today is Islamophobia, and anti-Muslim bigotry." Arik winked at Robert as if offering gim some inside trade secrets. Robert wiped his mouth, wishing to lie down somewhere. "And if you trace the organizations and the main advocates and activists in Islamophobia in America, you will see that all those organizations are pro-Israeli occupation organizations and activists …"
They listened for announcement about meeting for some specialized engineers.
"You will see every single last one. Do you know why?" Robert realized it was going to be yet another boring afternoon. "Because one of the leading Islamophobes by the name of Daniel Pipings, said the political empowerment of American Muslims is a direct threat to Israel." Arik laughed and Robert tried to imitate some kind of a chuckle, trying not to spoil those fried remnants that still resembled food in his mouth. "In fact …", Arik took a toothpick, playing with it, "… what Pipings said is that American Jews - not Israel - may be threatened by the 'increased stature, and affluence, and enfranchisement of American Muslims, because they are so much led by an Islamist leadership'." Arik emphasized last word.
"I thought that the 'pro-Israeli occupation lobby' that is connected to the Islamophobia network is the reason why America experiences 'more problems, more Islamophobia', …", he exhaled in secret, realizing that the only female was gone now, after finishing her milk carton fluid, "… more hate crimes, more desecration of mosques, more anti-Muslim activity than other countries in North and South America?"
Arik paused and for a moment Robert felt as if some kind of a secret police will seize him by his arms and take him away for some interrogation. Realizing he was not on the surface, he tried to iron up his words.
"I mean … this Zionist lobby is also the biggest obstacle to Muslims 'liberating' Palestine, Jerusalem, and the al-Aqsa Mosque, the heat of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, right?" His giggle made Arik's face even darker and soon he realized his arguments were bad, to say at least. Arik ignored his political incompetence and continued, covering mouth with one hand and continuing to play with a toothpick.
"Walidahran isn't alone blaming Jews for Palestinian problems or Islamophobia." Robert knew that Arik felt like a local god now, having arrested Robert's attention to his personality. "Conspiracies about a Jewish or Zionist lobby controlling American foreign policy …", Arik glanced quickly at Robert like some British Lord at a negro slave in Africa, "… especially towards a future Palestinian state, are frequently repeated throughout Arabic and Islamist media. Their champions include Hamas, Iranian news outlets, and the Muslim Brotherhood."
Robert knew now that he had to play according to Arik's rules. He finished last remains of his artificial milk-shake, those greasy, waxy parts getting stuck in plastic straw.
"For example, … Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyehehehe blasted the United States as an 'enemy of Islam' in 2006 in part because it was 'influenced by the Zionist lobby'." Robert made a slow nod, remembering days with Miriam on that second-rated couch, as a teenager. Arik continued.
"Those same groups also argue that Jews are the main culprits behind America's supposed trend toward anti-Muslim hate, and link the ideas together."
"So is this why you see the Islamophobia network trying to gin up negative information about Muslims and Islam?" Robert tried to cover his inability to hide irritable boredom.
"Yes." Arik made a sound of satisfaction with his mouth, some staff cleaning up tables already. "You could say that." Robert wondered what made him take a seat with Arik at the first place, staring around as if summoning good spirits of some kind. "This is a direct connection to the occupation of Palestine. It is a direct connection." Robert had no idea why he emphasized that word nor he cared much either. "And … because the strongest Israeli lobby in the world is in America …", Robert suddenly realized that Arik was not American, "… because America is the sole patron of Israel …" Arik chuckled in some kind of sarcasm and Robert tried to follow meekly.
Later on, as they were riding on one of those silent electric underground trains, Arik smiled at Robert, some ominous shadow hovering over his Midle Eastern face.
"Despite relentless propaganda about the horrors of alleged Nazi gassings of Jews in Auschwitz, the Jewish gassing of children in Palestine is not a human rights or editorial issue in the U.S. or Britain." Robert looked around and noticed some mostly ignorant and tired-looking scientists and other project members. "'Never Again' does not apply to them, does it?" Arik winked at Robert and then turned around.
"Do you mean that September the 29th of 1996 perhaps?" Arik slowly turned around, his face grinning in surprise. "Israelis gassing baby to death?" One scientist with thick glasses gave them a stern look.
"Yes! That's right!" Robert still wasn't sure whether Arik's talk was some kind of political testing from his part.
"Hanin Kassemi Garebi, 5 months old, from Shufat in Jerusalem, died after inhaling poison gas administered by Israeli forces." Robert could feel that Arik was so inspired almost as if about to blow himself up. He shuddered at the thought wondering how safe were these underground facilities. "Yes! She was dead on arrival at Makassed Hopital in Jerusalem. That's right." Arik's eyes flashed in some secret way and he turned back, leaving Robert alone in his pondering about the future.
